While few will concede it at this point, the Harris Chain FLW Tour is fast becoming the John Cox Invitational.

Cox was the last pro to cross the stage Friday and his 18-15 stringer put him back in the lead, this time by a comfortable margin of nearly 6 pounds. For reference, the gap between 2nd and 9th is 5 pounds, 4 ounces. With two days remaining and 143 fewer boats roaming around his home waters, it stands to reason why some believe the weekend is merely a race for the runner-up.

“Today was pretty stressful,” said Cox. “Nothing was working for me. No fish were moving up, so I just got on the trolling motor and fished all new stuff. Right at the end of the day, around 4 o’clock, I caught two 4-pounders. The game plan has been to go and go until I find something that looks like it’s starting to turn on and today it happened really late.”

Shane Lehew held onto 2nd with a 14-14 stringer that included four fish he caught sight-fishing. His 38-13 total has him 2 pounds ahead of fellow North Carolinian Bryan Thrift, who made his sixth straight top-20 cut and is in line for an FLW Tour record fourth straight top-10 finish. Thrift, the runner-up in the last three tournaments he’s fished, including the first two Tour events, caught 17-03 and has 36-13 at the halfway point.

The anglers who caught the lone 20-pound bags today occupy the next two slots on the ledger. Joshua Weaver sacked a day-best 22-00 to improve 30 spots to 4th with a 36-09 total while Bradley Dortch brought 21-02 to the scale and moved up 25 places to 5th with 36-06.

Here's a look at the top 10 after the second day of competition, with deficit margin from Cox indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. John Cox: 44-10
2. Shane Lehew: 38-13 (5-13)
3. Bryan Thrift: 36-13 (7-13)
4. Joshua Weaver: 36-09 (8-01)
5. Bradley Dortch: 36-06 (8-04)
6. Jim Moynagh: 36-02 (8-08)
7. JT Kenney: 34-10 (10-00)
8. Matt Reed: 33-14 (10-12)
9. Rusty Trancygier: 33-09 (11-01)
10. Tim Frederick: 32-06 (12-04)

JT Kenney jumped up 13 spots to 7th today while Matt Reed made a 14-place improvement and made his first day-2 cut since the Douglas Lake Elite Series in May 2012. The biggest mover to land in the top 20 today was California rookie Aaron Britt, who caught 19-13 to rally 88 spots from 102nd to 14th.

Andy Morgan caught a 6-14 limit and slipped from 5th to 20th, seizing the final spot inside the cut by 1 ounce. Mark Rose, the winner of the first two events this season, finished 65th.

After a 45-minute fog delay this morning, the field spread out again across the 10 lakes. Eventually, sunny skies allowed anglers to pinpoint and target newly-arrived bed fish, but the breeze that built through the morning also seemed to strengthen the offshore grass bite and that may be the X-factor moving forward if the sight-fishing opportunities start drying up.

Another round of stable weather and clear skies with a slight breeze is in store Saturday as the reduced field vies for a spot among the 10 finalists who will advance to Sunday, when the winner will be determined by the highest cumulative weight.

Cox ‘Winging It’

> Day 2: 5, 18-15 (10, 44-10)

Cox didn’t mince words when he was asked to sum up his day.

“Today sucked,” he said.

While his final weight may tell a different story, Cox said it was a struggle to settle into a groove.

“All day, I was trying to get something going,” he added.

His first three keepers were “scattered” and he filled his limit with two 1 1/2-pound stragglers. His day suddenly improved in the final 15 minutes when he caught back-to-back 4-pounders out of some Kissimmee grass on his way back to the ramp. All of the fish he weighed in today were caught sight-fishing and he plans to ride that strategy as long as he can.

“I could fish some, but it seems like when I’m fishing, I feel like I have a better chance just looking for them,” he said. “Even it they’re not spawning, they’re up there maybe chasing bluegills.”

His lack of a defined pattern or calculated strategy have reduced the stress that comes with fishing at home.

“I’m just winging it,” he said. “I guess that’s why I feel there’s no pressure or nerves. I’m not on anything. I’m not in a hurry to get anywhere in the morning. I just hope to get five at the end of the day.”

Shane Lehew caught a 5-pounder fairly early, but the rest of his day was largely a grind.

2nd: Lehew Looked At Four

> Day 2: 5, 14-14 (10, 38-13)

Lehew is not ready to surrender to Cox, but he’ll need to have a better day Saturday if he’s to close the gap.

“There’s still a chance,” he said. “Today did get quite a bit tougher. I didn’t get near as many bites.”

Four of his keepers came sight-fishing (all were 2- or 3-pounders) and the fifth, a 5-pounder, was caught flipping pads in Little Harris Lake.

“I didn’t leave any. I burned 'em all to make it through the day,” he said, referring to the bed-fish he caught. “I went through the same canals as yesterday and got lucky. Two more had pulled up.”

Tomorrow, he’ll revisit that canal and hope the wind lays down enough to allow him to flip the pads that have produced a couple key fish for him so far.

“I might try some winding baits tomorrow to mix it up,” he said.

3rd: Thrift Narrows His Options

> Day 2: 5, 17-03 (10, 36-13)

Thrift isn’t quite what to make of the area he’s figured out, but one thing he’s sure of is he wouldn’t mind another runner-up finish.

“I’ll take 2nd again,” he joked. “It’s a good way to make some money.”

It’s also a good way to take control of the lead in the Angler of the Year points race. He’s one of four anglers from the top 20 in points before this week to make the weekend cut – the next highest-ranked pro is Clark Wendlandt, who came to the Harris Chain trailing Thrift by 50 points.

“I’m very pleased,” Thrift said. “I didn’t think I was on that kind of weight. It surprised me and I’m excited to go back out there tomorrow.”

He’s coming off a 2nd-place finish at the Lake Seminole Southeastern FLW Series and he said that experience helped get him in tune with which phase the Harris Chain bass could be in.

“I looked around there for beds and saw very few and figured it would be the same thing,” he said. “I think they were in between (spawning) waves at Seminole and I feel like that’s what’s going on this week.

“I’m not saying it won’t be won off the bed, but I didn’t go up there and look around because I didn’t want to get caught up in the merry go-round.”

He’s narrowed his strategy down to one lake and he caught everything today casting rather than looking at them.

“I’m not sure if I’d call it a pattern,” he said. “It’s nothing weird, but a combination of covering water in an area. They’re definitely not spawners, at least I don’t think they are. They’re out there in 4 or 5 feet of water. They could be, but I don’t think they are. They’re definitely not pre-spawn. I know that.”

He said he wasn’t sure what level of confidence to have in the area he’s been fishing. He’s not sure what he’ll find in there tomorrow.

Bryan Thrift is in the hunt for a third straight top-3 finish to start the FLW Tour season.

“I’m not totally confident,” he added. “I don’t know how many fish are there. I had what I had at noon and pulled the plug and went looking for more stuff. Where I’m fishing, when I do catch one, there’s a good chance of it being between a 2 1/2- to 4 1/2-pounder.”

4th: Wind Put Weaver In A Groove

> Day 2: 5, 22-00 (10, 36-09)

Weaver popped the day’s heaviest stringer thanks to the steady breeze that picked up throughout the morning. He’s hoping it picks back up Saturday as he looks to continue his string of strong performances in Florida.

“Yesterday, I knew it would be tough without the wind and today the wind blew,” he said. “First thing this morning by 10 o’clock, I had 17 pounds. It got pretty crazy catching fish. I tried to lay off and went and found new areas and caught some decent fish to cull up. I’m excited to get back out there.”

By the afternoon, though, the wind had gotten to be too much to be able to fish effectively, but he was still enthused by what he’d found.

“I’d rather have too much than not enough,” he said of the breeze.

His two best fish came shortly after the fog delay was lifted and he fished the same two lakes as Thursday, and is committed to them moving forward.

“I haven’t had that much boat pressure around me so the smaller field will definitely help,” he said. “I caught quite a few fish today. Hopefully, I have enough to last the weekend.”

5th: Dortch Called An Audible

> Day 2: 5, 21-02 (10, 36-06)

Dortch was scuffling with three fish in the livewell midway through day 2 when he decided to pull the plug on his shallow flipping strategy. His move to some offshore grass paid off with a 7-06 kicker that held up as big fish of the day. He added a 4-pounder then caught a couple more upgrades from another offshore area to get himself into the top 10.

“It turned out good considering at 1:30 it was looking pretty bleak,” he said. “I should’ve had about the same weight on Thursday, but I broke off a 7-pounder at the boat. I’ve fished here before in BFLs and ABA stuff and it’s always a tough place to figure out. I had a horrible practice and fished every lake, but could never find anything.”

He felt his best option was in Lake Griffin, but a bad boat draw forced his hand on day 1 and he decided to spend the first 2 days in Lake Harris. He may never leave now.

Joshua Weaver is anxious to see what Saturday holds after catching 22-00 today.

“I’m going to bounce around between shallow and deep,” he said. “If it’s windy early, I’m going to check the offshore stuff. If I catch a good one, I’ll stick around. In Florida, if you catch one big one, there are usually others around.”

49th: Yelas Channels Inner (Larry) Nixon

> Day 2: 5, 18-07 (8, 24-03)

Jay Yelas learned a valuable lesson Thursday.

“I just fished too fast and tried to do too much,” he said of his day-1 effort that resulted in a three-fish stringer for 5-12, which left him buried in 150th place. “Over the years in Florida, one way to catch them is to get in an area and fish slow with a worm or Senko.”

So that’s how Yelas spent the day Friday, roughly a mile from the blast-off area on a 50-yard stretch of deep hydrilla.

“I pretended I was Larry Nixon today,” he joked. “I soaked a worm all day.”

It produced 10 keepers, including a 5- and 6-pounder, and vaulted him high enough on the leaderboard to take home a $10,000 paycheck. Yelas caught the 6-pounder swimming a worm while the rest picked it off the bottom.

“There were a few scattered pads around, but they were on the outside edge of the grass in about 7 feet of water,” he added. “It was nothing spectacular, but it was the right call. You just have to do the right thing to get them to go. It was not a great finish, but a great day.”

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 163 anglers, 128 limits (14 fewer than yesterday), 17 fours, 9 threes, 4 twos, 1 one, 3 zeroes (2 more than yesterday).

> There was a three-way tie for 53rd, which was the last spot that earned a check this week. Scott Canterbury edged out Larry Nixon and Jeremy Lawyer for the $4,000 payday – all three tallied 23-14 – by virtue of his 13-14 stringer on day 1. Day 2 ties are broken by best single-day weight.
