Stephen Patek’s last tournament win came in a small club derby a little more than 3 years ago in California, prior to his moving to Texas in advance of launching his FLW Tour career.

He’d love to update his fishing résumeé with a victory at Lake Travis this week.

“I didn’t expect to be leading,” Patek said after his 14-01 stringer moved him ahead of Bryan Thrift today. “It feels great, but I know it’s far from over. I’m trying not to get my hopes up. I’m keeping my head down and we’ll see what happens.”

Patek’s total of 34-06 is 4 ounces better than Thrift, who couldn’t crack double digits after sacking nearly 25 pounds on day 1. Thrift scratched out 9-06 on what was a tougher day across the board at the rocky Texas Hill Country lake.

While Patek and Thrift swapped positions at the top of the leaderboard, the next four competitors were outside the top 25 when they left the dock this morning. Jeremy Lawyer advanced 28 spots to 3rd with a 19-07 stringer to give him 31-11.

In 4th is local favorite (and resident) Clark Wendlandt, who made up 22 positions behind a 17-03 bag, anchored by a tournament-best 8-06 brute that helped push his total to 29-10. Mark Rose, fresh off his win at Lake Guntersville 2 weeks ago, moved into 5th (from 41st) thanks to a 17-03 catch to give him 28-12.

Clark Reehm’s 21-11 bag was the lone 20-pound sack today and it catapulted him 102 places up the ledger to 6th, where he has 28-08.

Here's a look at the top 10 following day 2 of competition, with deficit margin from Patek indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Stephen Patek: 34-06
2. Bryan Thrift: 34-02 (0-04)
3. Jeremy Lawyer: 31-11 (2-11)
4. Clark Wendlandt: 29-10 (4-12)
5. Mark Rose: 28-12 (5-10)
6. Clark Reehm: 28-08 (5-14)
7. Dylan Hays: 28-06 (6-00)
8. Brad Knight: 26-15 (7-07)
9. Scott Suggs: 26-10 (7-12)
10. Christopher Brasher: 26-04 (8-02)

Dean Alexander (7th to 47th) and Grae Buck (10th to 46th) both failed catch a limit today and dropped out of contention. At the same time, rookie Josh Douglas made a meteoric rise up the standings with an 18-15 effort that carried him from 154th to a 27th-place finish, an improvement of 127 places. Wesley Strader also had a triple-digit improvement, going from 126th to 22nd with a 16-07 stringer that brought him to within 7 ounces of making the top-20 cut.

After 85 anglers bagged limits on Thursday, that number dropped to 62 today, an illustration of how Travis’ got its finicky reputation. It was the second straight day of prolonged sunshine, but a stiff south breeze kicked up in the morning and stuck around the rest of the day.

Saturday is expected to be the nicest day of the week weather-wise with temperatures in the low 80s and a south-southwest breeze between 5 and 10 mph.

Patek Was Done Early

> Day 2: 5, 14-01 (10, 34-06)

After what he called a mediocre practice, Patek has milked one spot for the majority of his weight through 2 days. Now, he’s hoping more fish filter through there again Saturday.

“I think today proved that there are more fish moving in,” he said. “There should be another wave tonight. We’ll have to see. They could be all small ones.”

He said the first couple of fish he’s caught there both days have been on the smaller side, then they’ve gotten progressively bigger. A small-profile soft-plastic has been the key producer on his Carolina rig. He’s mixed in a jig and gets bites on it, but it’s not nearly as productive as the C-rig.

Patek leans into a fish at Lake Travis on Friday.

“There are plenty of spots that look like it on the map, but finding fish on them is a different story,” he said. “Right now, nothing seems to be as good as where I’m at.”

He had the fish he weighed in today by 8 a.m. and then backed off his best area in search of more productive water. The spot that produced his day-1 lunker was getting hit by the south wind and Patek went fishless there.

2nd: Thrift Hitting Reset Button

> Day 2: 5, 9-06 (10, 34-02)

Thrift is not writing himself off by any means even though he thinks the spot that produced most of his day-1 weight might be fading.

“I’m still there and anything can happen,” he said. “It’s supposed to be hot and sunny tomorrow so I’m going to switch a few things up and go practice tomorrow. There are some places I’ll hit again, but I have to go practice because right now I’m not on the fish to win.”

He still caught three keepers at what was his best spot on Thursday, but one was a 2 1/2-pounder and the other two were squeakers. He tallied seven keepers for the day and never connected with any bigger specimens.

“I’ll probably start there tomorrow,” he said. “I’ll try to catch some keepers early and then when the sun comes out start going down some bank to see if any fish have moved up shallow.”

While he caught one fish on a jig today, the Damiki Finesse Miki worm rigged on a shaky-head has been his go-to presentation this week so far.

3rd: Docks Were Lawyer’s Deal

> Day 2: 5, 19-07 (10, 31-11)

Lawyer spent the first 2 1/2 hours Thursday up the Colorado River fishing shallow and emerged with nothing to show for it. He then shifted gears and worked over some deeper-water areas and cobbled together a 12-plus-pound limit that included a 6-pounder.

Today, since he was in the later flights, he opted to not beat the bank and targeted docks all day instead.

“There are a lot of docks on this lake, much like Table Rock back home,” he said. “I didn’t want to go up the river and beat heads with everybody.”

He managed five keeper bites and lost another one that he thinks was in the 5-pound range. Saturday will be a crapshoot as he doesn’t have immense confidence in anything he’s doing.

“I feel like I’m just hanging on,” he said. “I can’t tell where I’m going to get a bite. I have no choice but to continue to do what I’m doing. Maybe I’ll find another area with more fish in it. Either way, I’ll probably stay around the clear water since I’m more comfortable doing that.”

Clark Wendlandt is hoping one or two more of these sorts of fish find his bait this weekend.

4th: ‘Awesome’ Fish for Wendlandt

> Day 2: 5, 17-03 (10, 29-10)

When some anglers catch a giant bass like the one Wendlandt caught today, they’re apt to give it a nickname for the sake of posterity. Wendlandt did no such thing.

“It was an awesome fish,” he said. “I love those fish with the big black marks. That fish’s whole head had those black speckled marks on it. It was just a cool fish.”

Which made for a pretty cool day.

He caught his kicker pretty early fishing deep, then added another keeper before moving around to finish off his limit. From there, he went looking for other upgrades while trying to plan ahead for the weekend.

“I didn’t see a point in beating up stuff even to catch a big one,” he said. “I figured I’d burn through stuff so I just went fishing rest of the day.”

He did cull a few times, but also lost a good one in the morning and another in the afternoon.

“Weight-wise, this is exactly what I expected (from the tournament),” he added. “There were two big team tournaments here about 3 weeks ago and everything so far is in line with those. I think somebody will have to catch a couple big ones to win and finish out with a limit. I figure I have as good a chance as anybody to do that.”

6th: Reehm Timed It Right

> Day 2: 5, 21-11 (10, 28-0)

Reehm’s goal for today was to salvage as many points as possible and, with a bit of luck, maybe sneak into check range. Mission accomplished.

“I felt pretty good when the first fish I put in the boat was a 4 1/2-pounder,” he said. “When you’re that far down, you need to salvage points and try to get a check. I knew a check was doable since my best day in practice was around 13 (pounds). I thought I’d need 19 to have a shot at the cut.”

By the time he left his best area, he already had 18 or 19 pounds. He then stopped where he’d lost a 4-pounder in practice and caught a 4 1/2 to crack the 21-pound mark.

“I always say you can’t make up points in June that you could’ve earned in February,” he said.

He’s caught some fish on reaction baits and some while fishing slower presentations.

“It’s been a mix,” he added. “When I see them on the graph getting active, that’s when I can get reaction bites and the window is open.”

Clark Reehm shows off one of the fish that helped him soar 102 places up the standings today.

He’s convinced timing will continue to be key at his prime spot where he and his co-anglers tangled with at least seven fish that weighed 3 or more pounds.

“You need a big fish each day here and two big ones to neutralize all the littles ones,” he said. “I think my spot is reloading. That’s the good side of it all.”

105th: Deep Fish Didn’t Fire For Bird

> Day 2: 5, 9-00 (8, 12-09)

Cody Bird opted to fish deeper water Thursday as a result of the success he had doing the same thing in practice. The only problem was the wind and clouds from earlier in the week were long gone on day 1 and he struggled mightily, totaling three keepers for 3-09.

Today, he stowed his finesse gear – he’d stuck with a dropshot on Thursday – and threw a crankbait all day and came out with a 9-pound limit.

“For every three keepers, I must’ve caught 40 fish yesterday and today,” he said.

He said the change in conditions is what hampered him.

“The fish weren’t on the places I’d found them on in 25 feet,” he said. “What I did catch was more shallow and they were smaller. I was so gung-ho to get started because I thought I had them pegged deep. Then it kind of fell apart on me.”

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 164 anglers, 62 limits (23 fewer than yesterday), 23 fours, 22 threes, 31 twos, 16 ones, 10 zeroes (4 more than yesterday).

> After finishing among the top 7 in points the past two seasons and winning two events, including the 2016 Forrest Wood Cup, John Cox is off to a rocky start this year. He’s missed two cuts and has yet to catch a limit in four days of competition. He finished 51st today at Travis.

> Reigning Angler of the Year Andy Morgan battled an illness this week and wound up 90th, his worst showing since May 2012 when he finished 106th at the Potomac River.
