Joe Uribe Jr. arrived at Lake Havasu a confident man and as the conditions unfolded last week during the Western FLW Series opener, it only emboldened him more to employ a two-pronged attack that focused on Havasu’s healthy population of largemouth and smallmouth.

Rather than rely on typical finesse tactics like a dropshot, he opted for the subtle Ned rig when targeting smallmouth, which were in their staging areas. He paired that with working the tules in the backs of pockets with a customized swimbait/swimjig to fool largemouth which were coming to the shallows in waves amid rising water temperatures.

After averaging just shy of 15 pounds over the first two days, Uribe overcame a 3 1/2-pound deficit on the final day with a tournament-best 22-00 stringer that catapulted him to a nearly 6-pound victory. He was the lone competitor to crack the 50-pound barrier with his winning total of 51-13.

It’s his second career FLW Series win – both have come in February at Havasu.

“Obviously, any win of that caliber is a great feeling,” he said. “I feel humbled and honored to have that opportunity. The first one will always be the best. It was the highlight of my career and got the monkey off my back. Since I got started in 2007, I’ve had several Top 10s and knocked on the door, but never closed the deal. I stopped putting pressure on myself and let it happen. Only then was I able to enjoy it and seal the deal.

“This one was awesome because my mom and dad were there and my sister followed me on the water. It was a great experience.”

Here’s how he made it happen.

Practice

Uribe spent some time at Havasu about a month before the tournament and found fish firmly locked in their wintertime pattern. Good smallmouths were scattered and accessible in usual offshore haunts, but largemouths were largely hit or miss.

“We caught tons to 3- to 5-pounders using hair jigs and Ned rigs and tubes,” he said. “Deep-diving crankbaits worked great on largemouths.”

He also noted the typical increase in seasonal fishing pressure, perpetuated by the influx of snowbirds to the area. From the time he pre-practiced until he started practice last Monday, the fish had started to shift into pre-spawn mode.

“Going into the event, we had high pressure, blue skies, warm temperatures and a full moon,” he said. “Those fish went from being in 20 to 30 feet to setting up in 10 to 15 until the final day (of competition) when the rains came. That’s when the largies ran to the tules.”

Under blue skies last Monday, air temperatures reached the lows 80s and he started practice by checking some areas for smallmouths. Where water had been 52 to 54 degrees a few weeks prior, it had risen into the upper 50s and he noted how the fish were moving around with the increased fishing pressure.

“I stayed in the Windsor Basin because I knew that if somebody could put it together there every day, they had a good chance to win,” he said. “That’s where the majority of better fish are. It had good water color, plenty of current and a lot of structure.”

Sensing the conditions were making the fishing a bit tougher, he still felt confident he could generate at least five bites a day once the tournament started by targeting largemouths in the mornings before shifting to staging smallmouth in deeper water.

“I knew I could get a limit and that was all I was looking for, especially since I was catching good 3- to 4-pound average fish,” he said. “I figured coming in 18 to 20 pounds a day would win, but after practice, I was thinking more like 15 per day.

“The crankbait bite completely died and I didn’t push it. I threw it enough to know I wasn’t going to get bit on it. With the water warming up, I stopped relying on hair jigs for smallies. The water was in the upper 50s and low 60s and I went with a Ned rig for smallies. It’s something new for me. It’s a little more subtle and I was able to keep it on the bottom. They seemed to like the bulkier profile.”

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 15-01
> Day 2: 5, 14-11
> Day 3: 5, 22-01
> Total = 15, 51-13

During low-light conditions early in the morning, Uribe went after largemouth that had pushed into the backs of pockets with flats leading to isolated strips of tules or bays with defined shade lines.

On Thursday, he bagged three green fish that way, before moving out to smallmouth territory. He had one spot in particular that he’d found on the final day of practice, a hump that topped out at 19 feet and fell off into 25 feet on all sides near the mouth of a marina.

“Those fish were staging there before going into the back of the marina to spawn,” he said. “When I checked it Wednesday I immediately saw a few marks on the bottom and figured they were either carp or smallies. I made a couple casts with a 10XD just to get a feel for the contours and rocks.”

He then picked up a Ned rig and caught a striper on his first cast. Two casts later, he caught a 3 1/2-pound smallmouth. On Thursday, he plucked a 3- and 4-pound smallmouth off the same spot with the same Ned rig. He totaled six keepers on day 1 and wound up with 15-01, good enough for 7th place in the 124-boat field.

On Friday, he followed the same formula, hitting the same pockets and cuts in search of largemouths that were chasing shad in front of clumps of tules with some shallow grass in the area.

“Those fish were moving and setting up on the tule points,” he said. “I’d bring that swimbait past those points.”

He boated three largemouth doing that Friday morning before sliding back out to the hump by the marina mouth. Once there, the Ned rig produced a 3-pound smallmouth. Later on, he ran through additional pockets and picked off three more largemouth to push his weight up to 14-11.

“By doing that, I realized more fish were moving up,” he said. “That day I watched the amount of quality largemouth being weighed in and guys were mentioning that they caught them shallow. Hearing that reinforced what I’d found.

“With the rain and overcast skies in the forecast for Saturday, I figured more fish would keep moving.”

With the significant shift in weather for the final day, Uribe figured the smallmouth would roam with more regularity and wouldn’t be set up on structure like they had been.

“They don’t seem to like those kinds of changes in the water,” he said. “The largemouth will come out of the structure and roam and feed.”

Facing a deficit of 3 pounds, 10 ounces, Uribe opted to target largemouth all day long.

“I had more bites Friday on the swimbait than I did the entire week,” he said. “I figured the swimbait could win it for me because the max I thought I could catch finesse fishing was about 14 pounds. I put everything else away and stuck with the swimbait.”

Oddly enough, it’s the same bait he used when he won at Havasu two years ago.

He tallied 10 bites on Saturday and never lost a fish that bit his offering.

“I capitalized on everything I got,” he said. “I caught swimbait fish on Friday, but they were the males. On Saturday, the big girls had moved up.”

The key moment of the final day occurred early on. At his third stop, he hooked and landed a 5 1/2-pounder, his second 5-pounder of the day, but as he was unhooking his bait, he realized how fortunate he was to actually land the fish.

“It wasn’t until after I put that fish in the livewell and looked at the bait, it got tweaked to the point where I should’ve lost that fish,” he said. “I knew right then and there it was going to happen. The way it was rigged, it should’ve come off.”

He wound up with a mixed bag of three largemouth, all of which were 4 pounds or bigger, and two smallmouth. His 22-01 stringer was the only 20-pound bag of the tournament and it moved him from 4th after day 2 to the win.

“I just changed with the conditions,” he said. “The key was following those fish from deep to shallow and taking advantage of the conditions.”

Winning Pattern Notes

> Uribe opted for the Ned rig because he felt it was a presentation the Havasu smallmouth hadn’t become accustomed to seeing.

“They weren’t conditioned to it,” he said. “I was making long casts with it and leaving in on the bottom and not moving it very much. I didn’t dropshot at all.”

> The key to his largemouth pattern was being very thorough in every pocket or cove where he found tules.

“I ran every pocket of tules I could find in Windsor Basin,” he said. “I would fish real slow and methodically and parallel the tules. I’d put the trolling motor on 40 percent and just creep along. That’s how I’d fish each bank. They were not big, vast areas. They were just isolated patches of tules. That all I’d focus on.”

Winning Gear Notes

> Ned rig gear: 7’ medium-action Performance Tackle spinning rod, Daiwa Steez EX 2500 spinning reel, 16-pound Sunline SX-1 braided line (main), 7-pound Sunline Super FC Sniper fluorocarbon line (leader), 3/16-oz. custom-made mushroom jighead (black) with 3/0 Gamakatsu hook, 4” Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits Senko (green-pumpkin laminate).

> Uribe trimmed the Senko down to 3 inches before threading it on the jighead.

> Swimbait gear: 7’11” medium-heavy Performance Tackle composite swimbait rod, Daiwa Tatula 100H casting reel (6.3:1 ratio), 20-pound Sunline Super FC Sniper fluorocarbon line, 7” unnamed soft-plastic swimbait customized with weight and skirt (sexy shad pattern).

> The bait Uribe threw was something he and his father have tinkered with for a few years. He refers to it as a “modified swimjig,” adding that it’s been responsible for three top-10 finishes, including both wins at Havasu. “My dad came up with the idea,” Uribe said. “He showed it to me and we put a different twist on it. The hook-up ratio is ridiculous.”

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – “Staying confident in my ability and knowledge of the lake and making adjustments and following the conditions on day 3. I also didn’t fish conservative – I fished to win.”

> Performance edge – “I cannot say enough about the Minn Kota Ultrex. I was a longtime MotorGuide user, but the Ultrex was crucial when fishing on outside spots. I could fish effectively without drifting away from or over my spots. Even in shallow water, when I got to where I couldn’t use my Power-Poles, it helped keep me locked on my spot.”
