The winners of the last eight Bassmaster Classics couldn't figure out the bite at Cherokee Lake this week, but a trio of first-year pros seem to have it dialed in.

Alabama rookie Jesse Wiggins, the winner of two Bassmaster Opens in the past 10 months, moved to the top of the standings at the Bassmaster Elite Series season opener on Friday as he caught a 16-14 sack to push his 2-day total to 35-15. He's joined in the midway Top 12 by two other anglers fishing their maiden Elite event – 3rd-place Jamie Hartman, who boxed 16-13 on day 2 for a 34-07 total; and 8th-place Skylar Hamilton, whose 14-15 haul gave him a 32-06 aggregate.

As for those recent Classic winners: Edwin Evers, Casey Ashley, Randy Howell, Cliff Pace, Chris Lane, Kevin VanDam (twice) and Skeet Reese all fell on the wrong side of the day-2 cut to the Top 51.

Wiggins has a lead of slightly less than 1 1/2 pounds over former Forrest Wood Cup and BASSFest champion Jacob Wheeler, who scaled 16-15 and climbed from 5th to 2nd with a 34-09 total. Red-hot smallmouth buster Seth Feider maintained his No. 4 position with a 15-01 bag for a 33-11 total and David Mullins, one of several east Tennessee residents getting the season off to a strong start in their home region, weighed 16-14 to complete the Top 10 with 33-10.

Here's a look at the Top 12 at the midway point (red numbers in parentheses indicate deficit margin from the leader):

1. Jesse Wiggins: 35-15
2. Jacob Wheeler: 34-09 (1-06)
3. Jamie Hartman: 34-07 (1-08)
4. Seth Feider: 33-11 (2-04)
5. David Mullins: 33-10 (2-05)
6. Randall Tharp: 32-15 (3-00)
7. Brandon Palaniuk: 32-07 (3-08)
8. Skylar Hamilton: 32-06 (3-09)
9. Ott DeFoe: 32-00 (3-15)
10. Brian Snowden: 31-14 (4-01)
11. Marty Robinson: 31-12 (4-03)
12. Josh Bertrand: 31-08 (4-07)

Randall Tharp, another former Cup winner, caught the biggest fish (a 5-05 largemouth) and biggest sack (20-11) of the tournament to rocket up 53 places to 6th. Other newcomers to the Top 12 were Defoe (another local), who went from 31st to 9th with a 16-14 bag; Marty Robinson (13th to 11th, 15-01) and Josh Bertrand (14th to 12th, 15-00).

Day-1 leader Cliff Crochet managed only a pair of 3-pounders and plummeted to 45th. Brent Ehrler, who started the day in 9th, suffered an even worse fate, falling from 9th to 68th with a two-fish, 4-06 haul. Other big tumblers were Jordan Lee (7th to 45th, 10-04) and veteran Mark Davis (11th to 40th, 9-15).

It was much warmer in the Jefferson City, Tenn. area than on day 1, but perhaps the biggest environmental factor was that the wind didn't put much of a ripple on the surface of the clear-water reservoir. Numerous anglers said that made their fish spooky and unwilling to bite.

Wiggins amassed all of his weight during a 1-hour flurry in the morning.

The breeze should be a bit stiffer for day 3 as it's expected to blow from the southwest at about 11 mph. The sun will disappear behind clouds again, but the high temperature is forecast to reach 60.

The field will be reduced to the Top 12 at the next weigh-in, with the winner determined Sunday by highest 4-day weight.

Wiggins Whacked 'Em Quick

> Day 2: 5, 16-14 (10, 35-15)

Wiggins compiled all of his weight during a flurry that lasted from approximately 8 o'clock until 9. He caught eight smallmouths during that stretch, the biggest of which was a 4-pounder.

"It was good this morning – I caught them and then I backed off," he said. "I hope they're still there tomorrow because that's the only thing I have to do."

Once again, he had his spot all to himself. It isn't big – he described it as about the size of three boats.

“It’s just a hole in a pocket that stuck out like a sore thumb on a map. I can’t believe no one else found it.

“I just go around in circles until I see one, and then I know it’s a fish, so I just drop down to it. The fishing was a little slower this morning and it took me a little longer to get a limit. But every time I set the hook on one, it was a 3-pounder.”

Jacob Wheeler caught three of his weigh-in fish during the final half-hour of the day.

He looked for other productive water during the latter part of the day, but that quest was fruitless. He's not concerned about the weather changing again for day 3.

"It was good yesterday when it was cloudy and windy. I think it's a morning-type of deal more than anything."

2nd: Wheeler Made Late Culls

> Day 2: 5, 16-15 (10, 34-09)

Most competitors had a rough afternoon in the bluebird weather conditions, but now Wheeler. He caught three of the five fish he took to the scale in the final 2 1/2 hours.

"I actually caught those three off of stuff I haven't hit yet, and I still have more to go to," he said. "The morning bite definitely wasn't as good for me – it was over at 9:30 or 10 today as opposed to 12:30 or 1 yesterday. No doubt when the wind stopped, (the fish) just weren't having it."

His bag contained all smallmouths of nearly identical size – it was topped by a 3 3/4-pounder. He said he broke off a 3 1/2 and lost another in the final 5 minutes.

A 2-week pre-practice visit was crucial to his success this week.

"I came down and graphed the whole lake," he said. "I know (DeFoe) pretty well and I talked to him a little bit, but other than that I didn't talk to anybody, I didn't call anybody and I didn't pick anybody's brain. I put my time in – I told myself that whether it was 60 degrees out there or 10 degrees, I was going out.

"I wouldn't be where I am right now if it wasn't for that preparation."

3rd: Hartman's Prior Visit Paying Off

> Day 2: 5, 16-13 (10, 34-07)

Like Wheeler, Hartman said an extended visit to the lake before it went off-limits provided the foundation for what he's accomplished so for.

"I came and pre-fished in December, I think it was for 13 days," he said. "I did my time and what I've caught so far is 100 percent the result of that. I haven't found anything new."

He's exploiting his best school in the initial hours of competition and then adding upgrades here and there. Despite his stout total, he's yet to weigh a 4-pounder.

"I'm leaving my area because one, I don't want to stick too many fish, and two, I don't want guys around me. I culled once later in the day today when I went largemouth fishing – I caught two and one of them helped me. I'm just killing time, basically, and hoping to get a big bite."

An extended pre-practice visit to Cherokee is paying off for Jamie Hartman.

He said he lost two solid specimens on day 2.

"One was the sixth fish I hooked and he was a good one. I had him all the way to the boat twice and he just came off. It probably would've been my first- or second-biggest fish – I got a great look at him twice."

4th: Tougher Day for Feider

> Day 2: 5, 15-01 (10, 33-11)

Feider's weight was off by 3 1/2 pounds from day 1, but it only cost him one position in the standings.

"It was bad execution and (fewer) bites," he said. "I only got five fish in the boat. I had two big ones up to the side of the boat that came off, but overall, I just didn't get near as many bites."

He said his rotation might have been off.

"I think it was a timing thing – I went to places at the wrong times. I caught them good on a spot at 11 o'clock yesterday so I ended up starting there, but where I caught all my weight was the place I started on yesterday.

"I should've gone to that place in the morning and the other one later on in the day."

6th: Tharp Staying Relatively Shallow

> Day 2: 5, 20-11 (10, 32-15)

Tharp weighed four largemouths and one smallmouth. He caught the brown fish, a 3 1/2-pounder, in the final half-hour of the day.

"I'd say I've caught all my fish in 15 feet of water or less, and that's pretty shallow considering what some other people are doing," he said. "I'm seeing a few boats, but not many."

He stuck the 5-05 and a 4 1/2-pounder during a flurry at about 9 o'clock. He boated approximately 20 keepers on the day.

"I missed one fish that I never hooked. I don't know how big she was, but just where she was at, it was real similar to where the other big ones were. I was upset, but as many as I caught, you're going to miss a few.

"I've learned a lot about the area I'm in and every day I should be quicker to make the adjustments."

He's not overly excited about the return to gray skies for day 3.

"The wind and the clouds on the first day really hurt me. I'd prefer it to be sunny – I definitely think that helps me visually."

45th: Crochet Looks at Bright Side

> Day 2: 2, 6-00 (7, 25-07)

Crochet certainly wasn't happy about his 44-place tumble, but thanks to his big first day, he'll at least pull a money finish from the event that concerned him more than any other on the schedule.

"Today was horrible, but I'm still going to deposit $10,000 in my checking account," he said. "It's a big deal for me to start out with a decent tournament here. On paper, this was the tournament that scared me the most."

He said he caught about the same number of fish that he had on day 1, but they were smaller. In addition to his two 3-pounders, he boated 10 that didn't reach the 15-inch minimum-length requirement.

He's been using a crankbait to catch largemouths in shallow water and will continue with that tactic on day 3.

"I had confidence in what I'm doing and today I just kept waiting for it to happen, but it never did. But it's a check and it's some decent points.

"There's no guarantee that I'm going to catch them at any of the other tournaments, but at least we're going to places that suit my style better."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 110 anglers, 65 limits (8 fewer than day 1), 12 fours, 13 threes, 8 twos, 7 ones, 5 zeroes (2 more than day 1).

> The slump that Brent Chapman fell into in the third event last year carried over into the new season and he finished outside the Top 50 for the eighth straight event as he badly underestimated the weight it would take to make the cut.
