One cast.

That’s all Jesse Wiggins devoted to a non-descript area of Lake Eustis during practice for the Harris Chain Southern Open last week. That single cast resulted in a 4-pound bass that told Wiggins all he needed to know about the spot that would ultimately help him turn the tournament on its head – and leave his competitors scratching theirs.

As the field jockeyed for position in and around canals and other traditional spawning locations in search of bedding fish around the sprawling system, Wiggins went rogue and focused in on deeper water where he felt he had a better opportunity to intercept pre-spawn and post-spawn fish. He never even went looking for bedding fish all week. Instead, he grinded a crankbait along some craggy bottom in 11- to 17-foot depths and mixed in a finesse worm en route to what he calls “the best thing that could’ve happened to me at this point of my fishing career.”

Yes, Wiggins, a 20-something from central Alabama, won a January tournament in Florida largely with a crankbait. His weights steadily increased through the tournament and when most of his counterparts in the top 12 stumbled on Saturday, he turned in his best day of the event with a 21-05 stringer that helped him to overcome a 5-plus pound deficit and clinch his second Open victory in as many years.

His 59-04 total over 3 days was 1-03 better than fellow Alabamian John Pollard, who was the only other finalist to catch 20 or more pounds on the final day.

“I’m still surprised,” said Wiggins, who will make his Elite Series debut at Cherokee Lake next month and compete in the Bassmaster Classic in March by virtue of his Smith Lake Southern Open win a year ago. “It doesn’t feel real. I know everybody works hard and I work hard, too. I don’t know why I was the lucky one to catch them or find the winning hole. It couldn’t have happened at a better time in my career. It’s crazy how things happen.”

At the Smith Lake Open last year, he expected to do well, if not contend for the win since Smith is his home lake. Registering this latest victory meant more to him from the standpoint that it was at a venue he’d never seen before and the way he won it.

“I grew up watching Bassmaster shows and every sight-fishing tournament I remember, Kevin (VanDam) would never sight-fish and he’d always be near the top,” Wiggins said. “That tells me you don’t always have to be sight fishing.

“I feel like I accomplished more. I figured that I could win at Smith if I did everything right,” he added. “(At Harris), I didn’t know what I found in practice. I only made that one cast on it. I knew when I marked it that they were bass and I knew there were a bunch of them and I also knew nobody would fish it. I knew it had potential, but no idea it would hold.”

A scouting trip to Lake Okeechobee the week prior to the Open proved valuable as it gave Wiggins an idea of what to expect at the Harris Chain.

“There were fry everywhere (at Okeechobee),” he said. “When I got to Harris, I was expecting to see the same thing. That told me there were a lot of post-spawners and with it still being January, I knew there’d be pre-spawners, too. I wanted to find something that had both and knew it would require deeper water.”

Here’s how he did it.

Practice

After his Okeechobee experience, Wiggins felt that he needed to explore some of the less obvious areas in some of the eight lakes that make up the Harris Chain. He started practice last Sunday.

“I started off by going to the deepest contours of (Lake Eustis) and caught some small ones,” he said. “I fished some docks and got bit quick and figured I could catch a limit that way, but it wasn’t going to be enough to win with.”

He continued to look for deeper holes and, naturally, bigger fish. While in Eustis, he made a cast with a finesse worm around a hump that topped out around 8 feet and had deeper water around it. His lone cast resulted in a 4-pounder and he immediately way pointed the spot. He didn’t pick up a crankbait once in practice, but on this particular spot, he figured a plug would be productive.

“I could tell how they were lined up on bottom that they’d eat one,” he said, referring to how the fish looked on his sonar.

It was enough to deter him from trying to compete with a sight-fishing pattern because he lists that as his biggest weakness.

“Even in practice on the main lake, I would see no boats,” Wiggins said, “but on the way there, I’d six boats coming in and out of all the canals.”

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 17-05
> Day 2: 5, 20-10
> Day 3: 5, 21-05
> Total = 15, 59-04

Since the boat he’ll use for the upcoming Elite Series season (a Bass Cat) is still being built, Wiggins had to compete out of his current boat, which isn’t equipped with Power-Poles. He made due just fine.

He decided to start where he’d caught the 4-pounder in practice and caught four of the six fish that bit with two coming on a deep-diving crankbait and two on the finesse worm. Rather than hammer away all day on the spot that he was still learning, he decided around 10 a.m. to head to an area where he’d caught a couple flipping in practice and finished his limit there.

“I knew I had a decent limit so I wanted to leave it alone,” he said.

The spot was hardly in a secluded, backwater pond. He was easily seen and many other boats had to idle through the area on their way to Lake Harris and elsewhere.

“Everybody knew where I was, but I think most everybody was thinking about catching a 9- or 10-pounder off bed than worrying about me,” he said.

He was pleased with the 17-05 he caught to start the event, but lost two in the 4-pound range that would’ve given him more than 20 pounds.

His first cast on day 2 ended with him reeling in a 3-pounder, but it took him some time to get dialed back in to where the fish were positioned. The wind was blowing more than it had on day 1 and it was creating some more current where he was.

“I moved on top of the drop and caught a 3 ½-pounder and then caught three more close to 5 within 30 minutes of each other,” he said.

He had 20 pounds by 9 a.m. and figured he had enough to clinch a spot among the 12 finalists. The key was sticking with the crankbait in the windy conditions and making repeated casts to the same spot. While his bait never brought any shell fragments back to the boat, he was convinced his crankbait was combing through a shellbed where some short hydrilla had sprouted up.

“I only caught short hydrilla, but there had to be shells there,” he said. “I could feel it grinding up and down both sides of this hump.”

His 20-10 stringer put him in 4th place entering the final day. He’d already considered making the final day in Florida a small victory, but knowing how close he was to the lead, he shifted his focus to catching the leaders on the last day, two of which were established Elite Series anglers in Justin Lucas and Marty Robinson.

“I would’ve considered the 12-cut a success, but once I realized how close I was to the lead, I wanted nothing more than to win because of what I knew it would do for my career,” he added.

He had his best spot to himself again on day 3 and after missing his target on his first cast, he caught a 4-pounder on the next throw to set the tone. He caught a small keeper on the next cast, then went an hour without a bite. He changed casting angles. He moved shallow. Finally, he saw a fish break the surface while chasing bait. Moments later, his co-angler caught a 4 ½-pounder in roughly the same spot.

“That told me they were still there,” Wiggins said. “I made a cast to where my co-angler caught his and hooked another and lost it at the boat. It was at least 4 pounds. That bothered me, but I knew they were still there.”

With his frustrating building, Wiggins stowed the crankbait and picked up a 6-inch finesse worm on spinning tackle. It’s his confidence bait. It didn’t take him long to get settled back down, thanks to the next fish that bit, a 6-pounder that wound up being his biggest fish of the week.

“I threw it out there and then it started to swim off,” he said. “That got me settled down. I’d been cranking all morning and other than those two fish early on, I caught nothing on it. My co-angler caught his big fish on a worm and I just made up mind that I needed to catch one on a worm.”

The 6-pounder was his fourth fish so he still had work to do. Not far from where he’d been fishing, Wiggins noted there was a patch of eelgrass where he’d seen some bass surface in pursuit of baitfish. He made a few more casts with his worm before shifting his attention to the eelgrass. His first cast with a vibrating jig through there netted him a 4 ½-pounder.

He still had two small fish he wanted to replace and he had several hours to do it. He stayed in the same area, sometimes veering off 20 to 30 yards from his sweet spot in an attempt to fire up the group of fish that remained. He stuck a 3-pounder around 9 a.m.

“Every fish I set the hook on there was 3 to 5 pounds,” he said. “I fished from 9:30 to 11 and didn’t get another bite. I had another dropoff where I’d caught a good one, but it was on Lake Griffin, which was an hour run with a lock I had to get through. I had time to go there and I felt like I needed another big one to win.”

Off he went to Griffin, where he connected with a 2 ½-pounder to get rid of his smallest fish.

“I was hoping for 4-pounder, but I’ll take what I got,” he said.

He opted to run back to his best area and had about 30 minutes left. With about five minutes to go before running back to the ramp, he saw a big fish roll on top. All week, he’d been able to catch those fish soon after they’d show themselves.

“I threw my crankbait over there and it bit it before it could dive out of sight in the water,” Wiggins said. “He smoked it. It was close to 4 and it culled out the 2 ½. That 1 1/2-pound upgrade was what won me the tournament. Thinking about it now, that might be the most important fish of my life. It’s crazy.”

It capped off a stellar final day that saw him weigh 21-05 and close out an improbable victory.

Winning Pattern Notes

> Wiggins said his key spot had all the ingredients necessary to keep bass happy.

“It had bait and it had current when the wind would blow,” he said.

It also had deeper water, with a 17-foot drop on one side of the hump and 11 feet on the other.

“The first day they were on deep side,” he noted. “On the second and third day, they were on the shallow side. They’ve might’ve been there on day 1, too, I but didn’t mess with it.”

> The key to his cranking presentation was maintaining contact with the hard bottom.

“I wanted the bait grinding on bottom because that’s what triggers them to bite,” he said. “Especially if you’re not getting hung up. Any time you’re grinding against the bottom, you’re going to trigger a strike.”

> Wiggins said his worm bites on day 1 came upon the bait touching bottom. “It felt like they were waiting for me to get there,” he joked. “On days 2 and 3, I had to shake it a little more, then they’d swim off with it.”

Winning Gear Notes

> Worm gear: 7’2” medium-heavy unnamed casting rod, unnamed spinning rod, 10-pound unnamed braided line (main), 12-pound fluorocarbon line (leader) 3/16-oz. homemade shaky-head jig (4/0 hook), 6” Zoom Trick Worm (green-pumpkin).

> Wiggins’ brother, Jordan, poured the jigs that Jesse used to win the event.

> Cranking gear: 7’6” medium-heavy unnamed cranking rod, unnamed casting reel (5:1 gear ratio), 12-pound unnamed fluorocarbon line, Jenko Fishing CD-15 and CD-20 (citrus shad).

> The CD-15 is a smaller version of the CD-20, but is not yet available at retail.

Notable

> Wiggins competed on the final day out of the boat of Matt Lee, who had missed the top-12 cut.

> Wiggins says he’s never developed a taste for sight-fishing because he has “no patience.”

> Wiggins is now in the unique position of having already qualified for next year’s Bassmaster Classic before this year’s Classic has been contested.

“It’s crazy how fast things have happened,” he said. “I’m blown away by it. It couldn’t have come at a better time. I was going to be struggling if I didn’t catch anything on the Elite Series. After day 2, there was nothing else I wanted more than to win this tournament. I’m not going to say I needed it more than anybody, but in my mind I needed it more.”

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – “Doing something different than everyone else. Everyone else seemed to be sharing sight-fish.”

> Performance edge – “My Lowrance unit was awesome in helping me find that spot in practice and dial it in during the tournament. On day 3, having Matt’s boat was a big help with those Power-Poles and the Atlas jack plate. Being able to blast off in some of that shallow water was a big key.”
