Angler of the Year leader Greg Hackney moved to the top of the leaderboard on day 2 of BASSFest at Lake Texoma as his tournament-best 20-02 stringer gave him a 35-12 total at the midway point. He says he has no idea whether he can stay there – or anywhere close.

"I'm fishing in a way that produces better bites – if you can get one," he said. "It's a hard deal.

"You'd think after today that I know where my next bite's going to come from, but I don't. All my bites are coming off the same type of stuff, but you have to fish lots of it to get that first one."

He'll carry an advantage of a little more than a pound into day 3. His closest pursuer is day-1 leader Casey Ashley, who boxed 14-09 (6 1/2 pounds less than he weighed on day 1) for a 34-10 total.

Gerald Swindle, who's 2nd behind Hackney in the points race, moved up 12 places to 3rd with a 17-10 haul for a 32-05 aggregate. Brandon Palaniuk's day-2 weight (12-08) was down almost 6 pounds from the previous day, but he actually gained one place to 4th with a 30-11 total.

Chad Morgenthaler returned to the launch one fish shy of a limit and his 11-02 bag dropped him from 2nd to 5th with 30-08.

1. Greg Hackney: 35-12
2. Casey Ashley: 34-10 (1-02)
3. Gerald Swindle: 32-05 (3-07)
4. Brandon Palaniuk: 30-11 (5-01)
5. Chad Morgenthaler: 30-08 (5-04)
6. Ott DeFoe: 30-05 (5-07)
7. Rick Clunn: 29-06 (6-06)
8. Edwin Evers: 29-00 (6-12)
9. Keith Poche: 28-15 (6-13)
10. Bradley Roy: 28-11 (7-01)
11. Steve Kennedy: 28-09 (7-03)
12. Dean Rojas: 28-06 (7-06)

Weights went up a little bit overall as the water level, which was 9 feet over full pool when the derby got under way, continued to recede. It took 22-05 (or a daily average of more than 11 pounds) to make the Top-50 cut, whereas 10 1/2 pounds was good enough for a share of that position after day 1.

Bradley Roy made the biggest move to get into the Top 12, catapulting 56 places with an 18-12 stringer. Others who moved in today were Swindle, Rick Clunn (20th to 7th, 15-06 on day 2), the rejuvenated Steve Kennedy (44th to 11th, 17-00) and Dean Rojas (30th to 12th, 15-08).

That quintet supplanted David Walker (6th to 13th, 11-00), Yusuke Miyazaki (7th to 35th, 7-08), Brandon Card (8th to 15th, 10-08), Mike Iaconelli (10th to 23rd, 9-11) and Kevin VanDam (12th to 25th, 9-13).

Clunn, who won the season opener at the St. Johns River, is now just 6 weeks shy of his 70th birthday.

One 6-pound-plus fish accounted for a good portion of Casey Ashley's day-2 weight.

The field will be reduced to 12 after Friday's weigh-in, and those anglers won't return to the water until Sunday. Saturday is reserved for a series of instructional seminars and other fan-friendly activities.

The WeatherChannel.com forecast for day 3 calls for mostly sunny skies, a high temperature of 91 degrees and a southerly wind topping out at 8 mph.

Bigger Bites for Hackney

> Day 2: 5, 20-02 (10, 35-12)

Despite his 4 1/2-pound weight improvement, Hackney thought the bite was off a bit from day 1.

"With the exception of the two better bites I got, it seemed like it might've been a little harder," he said. "Yesterday I didn't have as much down time, but today I had dry spells where I didn't get any bites – not even short ones."

He's fishing scattered areas located within a 10-mile stretch. His bag was topped by a 5-01 and he had two other fish in the 4-pound class.

"I've lost one good one each day and that really scares you. It's a funny deal – you go out hoping to get five bites and it seems like anything over that is a bonus. You've got to catch every one.

"This is a good lake, but it's got so much stuff going on right now that it's kind of mind-boggling."

He'd planned to fish a lot of new water on day 2, but didn't get to nearly as much as he'd hoped.

"Some of those areas had 25 boats on them, so I just rolled on off. Bites are so hard to come by, and they're really tough when you're fishing around someone else."

2nd: Slower Go for Ashley

> Day 2: 5, 14-09 (10, 34-10)

Ashley got far fewer quality largemouth bites than he had on day 1 – something that wasn't entirely unexpected.

"It's hard to catch 20 pounds here right now," he said. "But if they keep the water moving, I honestly think it'll get better. You can catch one off a bush, and then the next day catch another one of that same bush. You might catch a largemouth one day and a spot the next."

He caught a 6-pounder on day 2 from the same piece of brush that had given him a 5 1/2 the day before. That was his only high-quality bite of the day, however.

Gerald Swindle's 17-10 stringer moved him up 12 positions.

"I feel like I need to catch 14 or 15 pounds every day to stay up there (near the top), and that's not easy. Getting that one good bite a day is the key.

"I've been whittling down my bait selection, and I might go out tomorrow with just two or three rods on my deck instead of seven or eight like I've been doing."

3rd: Swindle's Bites Fewer, But Bigger

> Day 2: 5, 17-10 (10, 32-05)

Swindle didn't catch a keeper until 10 o'clock, but he picked up some serious quality from that point through the end of the day.

"I ended up having to fish a little differently than I did yesterday," he said. "I didn't get as many bites, but they were a little bigger. These fish are changing every day and it took me a couple hours to figure out what was going on.

"I'm basically just junk-fishing – I don't get a lot of bites, so I can't say it's a pattern. I just go to an area and try to grind it out and stay focused."

His bag was topped by a 4 1/2-pound largemouth and also contained a 4-pound smallmouth. He caught everything on a flipping stick.

"I didn't get that 6- or 7-pound bite, but I know they're in there and those fish are going to be the key to winning this thing. I'm going to need one of those tomorrow or on the last day to have a shot.

"I didn't lose anything – I've fished pretty clean the last 2 days. Tomorrow will be a new day and I'll start over and try to dial in a new area. I know I'm going to need 17 or 18 pounds a day the rest of the way to have a chance."

4th: No Big Ones for Palaniuk

> Day 2: 5, 12-08 (10, 30-11)

Palaniuk caught almost a dozen keepers, but none weighed more than 2 1/2 pounds.

"Today I caught the ones I weighed from all new water," he said. "I went back and checked a couple of the areas I fished yesterday and they seem to be reloading, and tomorrow I'll get to start where I wanted to start today (but couldn't because the spot was occupied by another competitor).

"I just need to get my timing and rotation down a little bit. A lot of guys are fishing the same stuff in the same places and getting on a good rotation seems like it's pretty important."

Brandon Palaniuk's weight was off by almost 6 pounds from day 1, but he gained a place in the standings.

He thinks the south wind, which blew at 12 to 15 mph at times, might've been the primary cause of his lesser action.

"During practice the wind blew from the north, and then yesterday it didn't blow at all. When it came out of the south today it changed the currents and in some places it slowed it down. That changes the water clarity and things like that.

"A lot of the places I had were almost unfishable."

5th: Morgenthaler was 1 Short

> Day 2: 4, 11-02 (9, 30-11)

Morgenthaler got just five keeper bites on day 2 and one of those fish never saw the inside of his livewell. Fortunately for him, one of the specimens he brought to the scale was a 5 1/2-pounder.

"I had him on and it was my fault (that the fish got away)," he said. "He was over 2 pounds – I saw him when he came out of the bush and I had him almost to the boat. Stuff like that happens.

"Ultimately I know I'm doing the right thing. Me and Swindle have been talking and kind of working together and we're fishing the same stuff. I just got tied up in some areas today that didn't produce enough bites."

He'll make only slight alterations to his game plan for day 3.

"I've got an idea what caused them not to bite, but we'll see if I'm right tomorrow."

10th: Big One for Roy

> Day 2: 5, 18-12 (10, 28-11)

Roy's strong bag was anchored by a 7-pounder, which took big-bass honors for the day and is leading the tournament in that category. His sack was about 8 pounds heavier than his day-1 haul.

"Yesterday I caught three in one area late in the day and that kind of keyed me in on how to catch them and where they were setting up and the general area of the lake I needed to be in," he said. "Today I just kind of put my stakes down right there and it worked out, and catching a 7-pounder certainly doesn't hurt anything."

He's fishing bushes and other shoreline cover. He farmed two bites, but never saw either fish and doesn't know whether they'd have aided his cause.

"I'm not confined to one area, but it's basically one section," he said. "I've been around plenty of boats – it's been pretty crowded everywhere – but I'm certainly going to spend a lot of time there tomorrow."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 108 anglers, 79 limits (13 fewer than day 1), 15 fours, 9 threes, 3 twos, 2 ones.

> Brent Chapman caught just 15 1/2 pounds over 2 days and ended up 94th – his lowest placement of the season and his fourth straight missed money cut. He said some bites he got during a pre-practice trip more than a month ago put him on the wrong path. To read his competition recap, click here.
