Despite a miserable start to the year at Lake Okeechobee, a lake he openly loathes, Bradley Dortch has sure bounced back in a big way.

Dortch, a longtime co-angler on the Bassmaster Southern Open circuit, punctuated his move to the front of the boat last weekend with a victory at the Wheeler Lake Southeastern FLW Series. It was an unexpected triumph considering his limited experience on the Tennessee River, but it fell in line with the surge he’s made since finishing 105th at the first Southeastern FLW Series at Okeechobee in January.

In early March, he led after day 2 of the Santee Cooper Southeastern FLW Series and wound up 4th. He followed that up with a 5th-place finish at the weather-shortened Smith Lake Southern Open.

“It’s been crazy,” Dortch said. “If you’d have told me 3 months ago, that I’d make three top-5s and win one, I’d have told you you’ve lost your mind. After Okeechobee, I was about to break every rod I own.”

It was at Smith Lake that he had a conversation with veteran Elite Series angler Jeff Kriet, first about what pound test line to use on a shakey-head leader, then about Dortch’s potential to win the event.

“He said, ‘Dude, when you win one, it’ll be the one you least expect to win,’ and he was exactly right,” Dortch said.

He arrived at Wheeler after purposely ignoring updates about the Bassmaster Elite Series there the previous week because he didn’t want to get sidetracked from what he found in practice. He hadn’t fished the lake since a B.A.S.S. Open in 2003.

He had an inconsistent start to practice, but his decision to run far up the Elk River turned out to be his winning move. He threw a swimjig and pitched a Texas-rigged soft plastic craw all 3 days to tally up 45-10, enough to edge day-2 leader Kim Carver by 12 ounces.

Going Solo

Dortch, who works as an industrial electrician, is a self-proclaimed river rat who cut his teeth on the Tensaw River and the Mobile Delta. He hails from Bay Minnette, Ala., but currently resides in the Orlando, Fla., area.

He has a heavy appetite for competition and tournament fishing is one way to feed that.

“I could probably stay home and clobber people on the river, but I want to compete against the best there is,” he said.

He had a troubling incident occur before the Santee Cooper FLW Series that caused him to split off on his own in terms of who he shares information with. Since then, he’s reeled off three straight top-5s heading into this week’s Southern Open at Douglas Lake in east Tennessee.

“I normally practice with a couple of guys and we share information, but when we got to Santee, a couple guys were lying and I found out they were lying,” he said. “So I decided to do my own thing. I decided I was going to fish how I’m going to fish and that lit a fire under me. After that, I proved I can make top-10s without anyone’s help.”

Off The Grid

At Wheeler, Dortch said his practice was “pretty horrible,” until he decided to run as far up the Elk River as he could go, or “until my GPS map said I couldn’t go any farther,” he added.

“Finally on Tuesday afternoon, I told my practice partner, ‘I can’t catch them on ledges or points or in the grass so we’re going to run up the Elk as far as I can go and we’re going to start working our way back down,” he said.

He caught one 3-pounder on a swimjig by accident, he says, as he was reeling back to the boat. long, he was onto something. He cut the hooks off his jigs and continued to search for concentrations of fish.

“That told me those fish were suspended,” he said. “ I had the boat in 13 to 14 feet and I was throwing to the bank, but there was a break line with a laydown on the break.”

By day 1 of the event, the fish moved in tighter to the bank. He finished his limit around 12:45 p.m. after he skipped his jig up toward a cut in the bank and a 3 1/2-pounder ate it.

“I don’t know why, but those fish had pulled up and were on the bank,” he added.

Dortch averaged a tad more than 15 pounds per day to capture his first FLW Series victory.

He focused on bluff walls, straight clay banks with overhanging bushes or laydowns or any shade-producing cover over the final two days and caught better numbers and better quality that way.

There were a couple stretches where his swimjig wouldn’t fall through the duckweed that had blown in toward the bank. He switched to a light punching set up and a Texas-rigged craw and had success with that, especially early on day 2.

“Making myself slow down was key,” he said. “I’ve won a ton of money out of the back of the boat and over time I’ve learned a lot of guys fish too fast and I made them pay dearly for that. My experiences as a co-angler was crucial to this win.”

He went into the final day in 5th place, 3 1/2 pounds behind Carver. His 16-11 stringer on day 3 was the best among the 10 finalists and pushed him to the top.

“I was very surprised that I won,” he said. “I figured I needed 18 to 20 pounds.”

Before the tournament, he told his wife he wanted to finish high enough so he could secure a berth in the FLW Series championship. He did that – he finished 11th in points in the division – and then some.

“To win it, it’s insane,” he said.
