Traveling partners Buddy Gross and Michael Neal remained atop the leaderboard following day 2 of the Pickwick Lake FLW Tour, but the chasm between them grew significantly.

Gross caught one of three 20-pound bags today before having to give up a couple hours of fishing to assist Neal, who had mechanical issues around noon. Gross’ 21-03 stringer gives him 46-11 at the halfway point of the event and a commanding lead that’s just shy of nine pounds over Neal, who caught 14-14 before losing 3 hours of fishing time. Neal has 37-14 and is the only competitor within 10 pounds of Gross.

Scott Suggs came in with four fish, but his 15-02 bag bumped him up to 3rd with 36-07. Travis Fox sacked 13-12 and moved into 4th with 34-08 while Jamie Horton stuck 15-15 to take over 5th with 34-02.

The gap from Gross to 10th place on day 1 was 8 pounds. Today, the deficit from 1st to 10th is 15-03.

Here's a look at the Top 10 after the halfway point of competition, with deficit margin from Gross indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Buddy Gross: 46-11
2. Michael Neal: 37-14 (8-13)
3. Scott Suggs: 36-07 (10-04)
4. Travis Fox: 34-08 (12-03)
5. Jamie Horton: 34-02 (12-09)
6. Rick Cotten: 33-07 (13-04)
7. Scott Canterbury: 32-15 (13-12)
8. Jeff Sprague: 31-15 (14-12)
9. Randy Haynes: 31-09 (15-02)
10. Barry Wilson: 31-08 (15-03)

The two other 20-pound stringers belonged to John Voyles, who finished 67th, and Tom Monsoor, who caught 21-07 – nearly triple his day-1 haul – including a tournament-best 9-13 kicker to move up from 96th to 20th and earn another day on the water with 28-11.

Reigning Angler of the Year Scott Martin saw his streak of collecting a check in regular-season events end at 18. He hadn't missed since he was 73rd at Beaver in 2013. His 114th-place finish was his worst showing since Lake Champlain in 2011. John Cox, the AOY leader entering this event, finished 21st with 28-09 while Jeff Sprague, his closest pursuer, caught 14-10 and moved up to 8th today.

The wind was again a factor today, making it difficult for anglers to target certain areas. When they were able to target key offshore areas, the bites were few and far between. Current generation wasn’t what it was on Thursday and that may have contributed to the weights dropping off across the board.

With warmer weather on the way for the weekend and the winds expected to slack off, the ledge bite may improve significantly over the next couple of days.

The Top 10 after tomorrow’s round will advance to Sunday, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Morning Proves Productive for Gross

> Day 2: 5, 21-03 (10, 46-11)

The mornings have turned into a do-or-die part of the day for Gross, who had all five of his weigh-in fish in the boat by 10:30 today.

“It’s all early and I can’t miss,” he said. “I had six keeper bites and got five in the boat. I lost a big one. It would’ve been my kicker. I know it was a big one.”

He targeted the same spot as he had on day 1 and noticed the water clarity had improved.

“I just hope it holds up,” he added. “I haven’t found anything else like it. I’m doing everything I can do, but I haven’t found it.”

Today’s stringer was three largemouth and two smallmouth with his biggest weighing in at 5-04.

“I’m picking off isolated targets,” he added. “They were dead on the targets today. On Thursday, they were scattered, but today I had to hit it right.”

He’s hopeful the same area will produce again tomorrow and that the wind will cut him some slack.

“I’m still not able to go in the direction I want to stay,” he said. “I’m basically doing a drift instead of what I wanted to do. Realistically, I think I can catch two or three there and hopefully five. Everything I’ve caught there have been good.”

2nd: Neal’s Area Got Muddy

> Day 2: 5, 14-14 (10, 37-14)

Not 60 seconds after he hit the throttle to run to his first spot, Neal’s hat flew off his head and sailed off the back of his boat. He figured then it wasn’t going to be a good day.

He made the most of it with nearly 15 pounds to stay in the hunt.

“A lot of what I would call my key areas got dirty,” he said. “You wouldn’t think the offshore 10- to 15-foot places would get dirty, but it went from 3 feet of visibility to less than 1 foot. The fish didn’t bite or just weren’t there. I hope it’ll clean back up some.

“I wouldn’t think it would’ve happened because on the lower end and the shallowest water is 8 to 10 to feet. It’s not like the wind was blowing across a 2-foot flat. I’m not sure how it churned up that much mud.”

He experienced his mechanical issue at 12:15 and had to get a ride in along with his co-angler from Gross.

Scott Suggs was one shy of a limit, but still moved up a spot in the standings.

“It’s a little frustrating,” he said. “It’s the first time in a tournament ever that I’ve had a mechanical issue. It was bound to happen to me sooner or later. It’s like guys who got stuck at Wilson. Things happen that are out of your control. I have to bounce back and make the best of it.”

To run down Gross, he’s going to have be on his game this week.

“I need to catch at least 20 tomorrow to even stand a prayer,” he said. “I need two bags over 20. I’m still not out of the ball game.”

3rd: Wind Wrecked Suggs’ Stuff

> Day 2: 4, 15-02 (9, 36-07)

Suggs knows he’s around the right quality of fish. He just needs the conditions to cooperate in order to target them effectively.

“The wind got me,” he said. “It may be calm in the morning and I might not catch anything. I got there this morning and it was rolling whitecaps and already mud. I caught a 6 off my first place, but I had to sit on it and thoroughly pound it.”

The rest of his shallow areas where he’d been catching schooling fish chasing shad to the surface were unfishable and he opted to move offshore. He adjusted his boat position and caught three more, including a 4-pounder.

“I never had an opportunity for the fifth,” he added.

He said current has been critical to the areas he’s been fishing and he’s hoping to have some moving water Saturday.

“On Thursday, they were pumping water in and letting a little out so the water was coming up and there was a little current,” he said. “I was able to fish my areas. The wind can be dead, but if I have no current, it’ll stink. It all depends on whether they run current or not.”

Travis Fox held onto his spot in the Top 5 despite catching a considerably smaller bag today.

4th: Fox Played It Safe

> Day 2: 5, 13-12 (10, 34-08)

Fox went the conservative route this morning, but it paid off and he finally put an end to the string of four straight finishes in triple digits.

“My goal was to get a limit in the boat,” he said. “Rather than going after quality, I went after quantity to make sure I had a limit. I knew 10 pounds would probably make the cut.”

He caught four keepers off his first area before shifting gears and heading out to deep water.

“I caught a 4-pounder right away,” he said.

Fox remarked about the fishing being tougher in general compared to Thursday.

“I had places where I could flip and catch them quick yesterday,” he said. “I went there today and didn’t have a bite. The wind was howling in on that stuff yesterday and I think that helped.”

He’s hoping to bag 15 or 16 pounds tomorrow to lock up his first Top-10 berth since 2014.

“If they bite offshore tomorrow, I’m dead meat because I don’t have anything to go to,” he said.

5th: Horton Mixed Shallow and Deep

> Day 2: 5, 15-15 (10, 34-02)

Horton spent much of the morning on day 1 helping his co-angler net fish. It wasn’t until 11 a.m. that he finally hauled in his first keeper, but he eventually put together a strong limit that included a 6-pound largemouth and a 4-pound smallmouth, both on crankbaits.

“I had to overcome some adversity,” he said.

Today, he went back to the area where his co-angler had caught his fish, but he couldn’t coax another bite there. He moved shallow and picked up a spinnerbait and caught three that way, including a 5-pounder.

He returned to his deep spot and added another 5. He later culled with a 2-pounder.

“I’m just fighting as hard as I can fight,” he said. “I think there’s a lot of fish in those deep schools. I just can’t get them to bite. I have had some good fish in my boat and if I would’ve done all of the catching I’d be up there where I need to be at.”

“I’m going to mix it up in the morning and go shallow before I go deep.”

12th: All Shallow for Browne

> Day 2: 5, 12-00 (10, 30-09)

Glenn Browne figures he has very little chance of winning this week, but his shallow-water acumen earned him a spot among the Top 20 and he hopes to ride it to a Top-10 finish this weekend.

“I don’t know how to fish deep,” he said with a chuckle. “Let’s just face the facts.”

He caught fewer keepers today and never had a chance at a kicker-quality fish.

“Things have gone well,” he added. “I’m going to still fish shallow. I have some places I haven’t been to because of the wind. If the wind lays down, I should be able to work on them.”

He’s targeting hard cover around which he thinks the fish are spawning or guarding fry.

“I caught some fish casting in practice, but it’s been nothing other than the flipping stick these last 2 days,” he said.

Jamie Horton tapped into deep and shallow areas to fill his livewell on Friday.

64th: Bummer for Hallman

> Day 2: 3, 7-02 (8, 21-06)

Bradley Hallman rolled the dice and went to Wilson Lake both days. He was in the last flight on Thursday so he wasn’t affected by the lengthy delay at the lock that cost 24 other anglers their day’s catch.

“That was an emotional roller coaster on all of us,” he said. “It was a hard choice to go back. I was kind of gun shy, but I went back.”

He caught most of his day-1 fish off beds, but had to scramble to get bites today.

“I really thought I could catch them messing with fry-guarders and beating the bank and it just didn’t happen,” he said.

He now has three finishes of 64th or lower since winning the season opener at Lake Okeechobee.
