Typically, Jason Lieblong gets a little restless having to sit through a 45-minute wait for a table at a restaurant.

Last Saturday was anything but a typical day for Lieblong so he didn’t mind a little extra time to chill and unwind in the lobby before dinner with his family at Mike’s Place, a seafood and steaks joint in Conway, Ark.

“My wife said, ‘You’re not saying much,’” Lieblong said. “I was just numb.”

That’s one of the symptoms that tend to follow winning a big fishing tournament on your home waters. As he waited for a table, Lieblong was still absorbing the impact of his wire-to-wire victory at the Lake Dardanelle Central Rayovac Series.

His 19-10 stringer on day 1 set the tone and he went on to total up 46-03 over 3 days to win by 2 pounds. He’s won a BFL tournament before and a couple local derbies, but this victory, which came with a nearly $40,000 payday plus a new Ranger boat, tops them all for the Conway native.

“It’s pretty big for me,” Lieblong said. “Things just went my way. Back when I won the BFL at (Lake) Ouachita, I didn’t catch a fish in practice and just went fishing. This was kind of the same deal and things worked out.”

His history at Dardanelle, while not nearly as extensive as some of the anglers he beat, proved to be an asset to him through the event. He targeted a backwater area that boosted his day-1 haul and he also fished lily pads, reeds, grass, shallow wood and brush piles.

Here’s how he finished on top at Dardanelle:

Practice

A few weeks ago, Lieblong had found a buyer for his Ranger Z520 boat so for the Dardanelle event, he competed out of a 2001 Ranger 461 with a 175-hp engine.

“It’s basically my backup boat,” he said. “It’s great for shallow water and it’s really easy to maneuver around logs and things. It’s so much easier to fish out of. A 21-foot boat is nice, but it’s not as nimble as this one.”

The boat turned out to be the perfect match for the out-of-the-way area he discovered in practice. Following a historically wet spring and early summer in the Midwest, the water at Dardanelle had been extremely high and local tournaments had to be postponed this summer due to unsafe boating conditions.

“The flow coming out of Oklahoma was like chocolate milk for the last two to three months,” Libelong said. “It’s started to clear up, but with the high water, we figured the shallow fishing would get better.”

Knowing he’d be up against some of the best local anglers and some regional stalwarts, in addition to a few Tour pros, Lieblong relied on his local knowledge of the lake during practice.

He found an area that he hadn’t fished before but said it’d always looked fishy. When he got in there, the frog bite was pretty strong, he said.

“I had to figure out a way to get back there,” he said. “Navionics doesn’t show contours around the islands so I slid my engine up and idled through there and it turned out to be okay to run through there. The next thing I know, I’m catching fish and it happened to be the mother lode to start out the tournament.”

He didn’t spend long in the area as he wanted to avoid being seen coming or going. He also rode around trying to identify stretches of reeds that had logs in them from the recent high water. He’d flip those with a craw or big worm.

“I had seven or eight places where I knew I could catch one or two,” he said, “but there’s not anywhere you can go back and forth and milk an area. Usually, in the summer you can catch one or two and pick up and go.”

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 19-10
> Day 2: 5, 14-07
> Day 3: 5, 12-02
> Total = 15, 46-03

Lieblong hit a couple spots to start day 1 of the tournament before heading to the area he found in practice. He threw a vibrating jig in some dingy water along some reeds and caught one. He picked off another keeper from a laydown and then headed to his backwater hole.

“I milked it pretty good and it was full of big ones,” he said. “We stayed in there probably for 90 minutes.”

The area had a combination of reeds and pads and he was culling by 8:45 a.m.

“I had 16 or 17 pounds by then,” he said.

He left the area to target a place he'd found the day prior to the tournament. He caught a 5 1/2-pounder on a vibrating jig on a wide-open flat where gizzard shad tend to group up.

“It’s an area that has been good to me in other tournaments,” he said.

Sensing he was close to a 20-pound sack, he decided to head in an hour early. Two dead fish (a 2 1/2- and 4-pounder) knocked eight ounces off his total and he had to cull a 3 1/2 after he caught the 5 1/2.

“I would’ve have close to 21 if not for those two dead fish,” he said. “I still couldn’t believe I had what I had. Catching that in August tells you how good this lake is.”

He went back to his frog area to start day 2, but caught “nothing but swimmers,” he said. “I had maybe 9 pounds at noon and I said, ‘Well, I’ve just been Dardanelle’d.”

Granted, it’s tough duplicate big-fish success on back-to-back days there, but Lieblong started rotating through his other areas to scratch out upgrades. He caught a 5-12 out of a brush pile on the lower end of the lake with a big worm and added a 14 1/2-incher.

He said hopping the worm around brush was his preferred method.

“If it’d get hung on a limb, I’d shake it to get it loose and they’d thump it when I was trying to free it,” he said.

He didn’t expect to still be in the lead, but his 14 1/2 pounds was enough to keep him ahead of the pack entering the final day.

As the leader, he left the dock first, but he knew he wouldn’t win any boat races in his smaller craft.

“I was joking about being boat number 1,” he said. “I knew everybody was going to pass me as soon as we got outside the launch. Sure enough, they did. Four guys went upriver, three stayed on the lower end.”

He went back to where he’d caught the 5 1/2-pounder and caught a small keeper on a topwater. A half hour later, he picked off a 3-pounder from a spot that he also fished on day 2. The backwater spot didn’t produce any bites so he fished some hydrilla and caught his third keeper on a vibrating jig. A 15-incher proved to be his fourth fish.

He caught two more fish off some brush piles not far from where he caught the 3-pounder earlier in the day.

“I thought I had 10 or 10 1/2 pounds,” he said. “That was a long 3 hours the rest of the day. I tried to mentally prepare myself for the letdown of losing or winning it.”

It turned out the 12-02 he had was plenty to keep him on top.

Winning Gear Notes

> Vibrating jig gear: 6’8” medium-action G. Loomis NRX casting rod, Abu Garcia Revo casting reel (6.4:1 gear ratio), 17-pound Seaguar InivzX fluorocarbon line, 3/8-oz. D&M Custom Baits Piranha II swimjig (black blue flash or white shad), Zoom Speed Craw Ultra Vibe trailer (black blue sapphire or French pearl).

> Worm gear: 7’6” heavy-action 13 Fishing Envy Black casting rod, Abu Garcia Revo Rocket casting reel, 20-pound Seaguar InivzX fluorocarbon line or 65-pound PowerPro braided line, 3/8- or 5/16 unnamed tungsten flipping weights, 5/0 Lazer TroKar flipping hook, Zoom Speed Craw (black sapphire) or Zoom Ol’ Monster worm (red bug).

> Lieblong flipped the Speed Craw under a 3/8-oz. weight and the worm was paired with the 5/16-oz. weight.

> He likes the high-speed performance of the Revo Rocket, especially when flipping. “I’m a big believer in the high gear ratios for getting the bait back in your hand so you can get the fish in quicker and maximize your time,” he said.

> His frog of choice was the Strike King KVD Sexy Frog in the tiger black pattern.

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – “Putting my time in and having the patience. I need to thank my dad for giving me the time off work and thanks to my wife for taking care of the kids and letting me focus on what I needed to do. I was really just hoping for a Top 10. I got it and then some.”

> Performance edge – “My Power-Poles were a big help. In that current and when you’re fishing shallow, you have to stop and fix your worm a lot because you’re catching so many fish. Those poles have paid for themselves so many times. I’d rather have those than a depthfinder because I already know where I’m going.”
