On a day when the leaderboard reflected tougher fishing for most of the 107 competitors, Edwin Evers just kept on rolling.

Lately, it doesn’t seem to matter if he’s on a clear desert lake, the ledges of the Tennessee River or the massive river that connects the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean, Evers is simply dialed in. Following another stellar day that saw him catch the heaviest stringer of day 2, he’s closing in on what would be an Elite Series first – winning back-to-back tournaments.

Evers sacked 22-09 today – one of only two 20-pound bags weighed in – and went from 5th to 1st with a 43-12 total at the halfway point of the St. Lawrence River Elite Series.

Dating back to the Lake Havasu event in May, Evers has sacked 20 or more pounds on seven of the last 10 competition days, including six in a row going back to BASSFest in June at Kentucky Lake, where he captured his fourth career Elite Series title.

“I’m excited about where I’m at, no doubt about it,” Evers said. “There’s a lot of fishing left, but I’m where I want to be – in the lead. This is smallmouth fishing, though, and they can be so stinking fickle.”

The guy on Evers’ bumper knows how to close out wins, too, so this will be no easy task if Skeet Reese continues on the pace he’s set. Reese bagged 19-13 today and slid up seven spots to 2nd with 40-05.

Josh Bertrand had the other 20-pound stringer today, a 20-11 sack that moved him up 12 spots into 3rd with 39-12. Bernie Schultz caught 18-00 and dropped a position to 4th with 39-07. Brandon Card’s 19-03 effort was good enough to bump him into 5th with 38-11.

Here's a look at the Top 12 halfway through the event, with deficit margin from Evers indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Edwin Evers: 43-12
2. Skeet Reese: 40-05 (3-07)
3. Josh Bertrand: 39-12 (4-00)
4. Bernie Schultz: 39-07 (4-05)
5. Brandon Card: 38-11 (5-01)
6. Alton Jones: 38-10 (5-02)
7. Kevin Ledoux: 38-00 (5-12)
8. Mark Davis: 37-14 (5-14)
9. Seth Feider: 37-14 (5-14)
10. Bobby Lane: 37-11 (6-01)
11. Greg Hackney: 37-07 (6-05)
12. Aaron Martens: 37-03 (6-09)

With the smallmouth still not ganged up on deeper, current-related structure, some have shifted their focus almost exclusively to largemouth or at least made them a bigger part of their game plan. Mark Menendez caught a 6-03 largemouth to take over big-fish honors and that anchored his 19-08 stringer that helped him make the cut in 43rd.

Kevin Ledoux, who sat out last year with a medical exemption, caught 17-09 and has 38-00 in 7th place as he clinched his first paycheck since Lake Michigan in 2012.

Aaron Martens made the weekend in 12th and holds the unofficial lead in the Angler of the Year chase with an 8-point cushion on Dean Rojas, who made the cut in 24th.

Day-1 leader Shaw Grigsby can serve as the poster boy for just how volatile and unsettled the fishing is right now. After catching nearly 23 pounds Thursday, the Florida pro battled rough water and bagged just two fish for 3-13 and finished 76th.

Grigsby wasn’t alone in his struggles to follow up a solid day-1 catch with similar results. Russ Lane dropped from 7th to 56th after catching 9-06. Jonathon VanDam’s three fish for 7-00 pushed him from 24th to 81st.

The sunny skies from Friday will give away to scattered thunderstorms around Waddington, N.Y., on Saturday with temperatures in the high 70s. Winds will continue to be out of the southwest, but drop into the 5- to 10-mph range.

The field will be reduced to the Top 12 anglers after tomorrow with the winner determined Sunday by total cumulative weight.

Evers in his Element

> Day 2: 5, 22-09 (10, 43-12)

Like some of his competitors, Evers had some largemouth in his livewell today, but he said they didn’t stick around long. His better fish have been of the brown variety this week.

“I got fortunate today and got a couple big bites,” he said, noting his kicker was a 5-04 smallmouth. “I caught a few more fish today, but they were small. My first limit didn’t weigh anything.”

The Oklahoma native who’s won Elite Series events in Alabama, Kentucky, Florida and New York, said he enjoys the chance to target smallmouth when he can.

“They’re a lot of fun to catch,” he said. “A lot of times you’re finding them on your electronics and I like doing that.

Josh Bertrand jumped up a dozen places in the standings today.

“I had a hunch coming here and having already made the Classic, I played on the hunch and it’s worked out real well. I was kicking myself pretty hard a couple days into practice because I wasn’t getting any bites, but I stuck with it. It’s working out.”

He totaled 10 bites today and weighed in all smallmouth.

2nd: Plenty of Bites for Reese

> Day 2: 5, 19-13 (10, 40-05)

Reese said he caught more than three dozen fish today and he’s effectively shaken off the effects of his 93rd-place finish at Waddington in 2013.

Like Evers, he’s seeking his second win of the season.

“I caught a lot of fish today, probably 40 or better,” Reese said in a B.A.S.S. release. “It was a fun day. Last time we were here, I didn’t make it to Saturday. So I’m glad to make the cut and get to go fishing again tomorrow.”

3rd: Bertrand Getting Quality, Not Quantity

> Day 2: 5, 20-11 (10, 39-12)

Bertrand, who was 8th at the St. Lawrence River 2 years ago, hasn’t been catching a lot of fish over the first 2 days, but he’s put himself around the better quality specimens.

“I’m happy with the way today went for sure,” he said. “I can’t believe it got that much tougher. It’s crazy. It was tough for me, but there’s so many big fish in here.”

He caught eight fish today, which works out to one per hour.

“It hasn’t been easy,” he added. “It’s been taking all day. It’s a stressful type of fishing. I wish I had a backup spot with 2- or 3-pounders on it. If I had 30 minutes to catch a fish, I don’t know if I could do it.”

He’s been mixing up the depths he’s targeting and has caught fish from 9 feet of water out to 40 feet.

“It’s just a hodge-podge,” he said. “It’s so spread out. You’re lucky to get two off one spot with what I’m doing. I’m not on a specific depth or structure. I’m hitting a lot of spots and trying to pull up on anything that might have a fish on it.”

He thinks that open-minded approach might work to his advantage over the weekend.

“I’m not even sure where I’ll start,” he said. “Hopefully, throughout the course of the day, I’ll be able to catch five. It’s not the plan you want to have, but the good thing is I have a clear head. I’m not stuck on a specific depth or bait.”

4th: Schultz Salvaged Day With Largemouth

> Day 2: 5, 18-00 (10, 39-07)

Schultz’s first fish today was a 4-pounder and he figured that would trigger a morning flurry to give him some early-day momentum. He was sadly mistaken.

“There were a couple fish that followed it to the boat and I thought, ‘Oh boy, here we go,’” Schultz said. “I didn’t get my second bite until 3 hours later.”

He’d made a lengthy run to his starting spot and after the drawn-out lull, he admittedly got nervous and went to some largemouth areas to fill out his limit.

“When I felt like I had enough to make the money, I went back to my smallmouth stuff and culled two of the largemouth,” he said.

Bernie Schultz started on a smallmouth spot before going after largemouth.

The conditions were noticeably different from Thursday, he said, but one thing that’s been consistent is the variety of baits he’s been throwing.

“It’s almost like we had a cold front and it changed everything,” he added. “I saw enough fish to do well today. I did lose a good smallmouth on a tube, but I’m throwing so many different baits. On Thursday, I caught two of the fish I weighed in on the same bait and rest were all on something different. Today, everything was on different stuff.”

Out of the 13 bites he got, roughly half were largemouth.

“I may gamble tomorrow,” he said. “I have a place near Waddington that I haven’t been to yet. It had enough fish on it to do well, but it’s in the wrong direction from my other areas if it doesn’t pay off.”

5th: Largemouth Key For Card

> Day 2: 5, 19-03 (10, 38-11)

Card is just one of four anglers to have caught at least 19 pounds each day and he’s finding the largemouth are more dependable than their brown counterparts.

“I’m catching a bunch of small ones, but the quality is hard to come by,” he said. “I caught several nice smallmouth on day 1, but today it was brutal so I went after largemouth.”

He said it takes some patience to wait out the bigger largemouth bites, but they’re worth it when they come.

“I’ll catch a 4-pounder here or there, but it’s not something where they’re all the same size,” he added. “Most are 2-pounders and you catch 10 or 15 of those to get a 4-pounder.”

He said the area he’s in has a good bit of shallow grass and it attracted more boats today than were in there Thursday.

“There were hardly any guys in there yesterday and I saw more coming today,” he said. “They’re all bailing on their smallmouth stuff.”

6th: Jones Sampling Shallow, Deep

> Day 2: 5, 17-06 (10, 38-10)

Alton Jones continued to mix deep- and shallow-water patterns today, but the wind made it more challenging to effectively fish the deeper holes.

“It changes the current angles ever so slightly and you have refigure out your drifts and run the trolling motor more and then you’re making more noise,” he said. “That’s part of the issue with the deep fish.”

His shallow areas produced a fair amount of bites, but nothing substantial. He’s not giving up on it, though.

“It will be interesting to see how that all plays out,” he added. “I feel like the patterns and areas I’m in have potential of kicking out a big bag or two. It’s just a matter of getting the right bites.”

He figures he caught between 25 and 30 fish and feels confident he can keep bouncing around and stay in the hunt for the win. A green-pumpkin YUM Warning Shot rigged on a dropshot has been a key producer for him so far.

“I went through some dry spells and lulls hunting around for a place with big ones,” he added. “I have a spot that I haven’t had guts to park on yet. I caught a limit there today, but they were not good enough to make you want to stay there all day.”

76th: Grigsby Baffled

> Day 2: 2, 3-13 (7, 26-12)

Grigsby started today by going back to the area that produced most of his weight on day 1. The fish were still there, but the conditions made it difficult to fish effectively.

He tried a multitude of baits and presentations, but couldn’t generate any momentum.

“I really don’t know (what happened),” he said. “There were so many out there on the drop. There were just giants all over it. Today, I get out there and it was blowing. I could hardly fish. It settled down enough, but I still couldn’t get bit.”

He had five bites and lost two at the end of the day.

“I couldn’t get anything going so I went shallow and caught one up there,” he added. “It is what it is. I could’ve done just about anything and caught what I caught. I kept thinking if I could catch a couple good ones, I’d be all right. I was expecting to whack ‘em and make a run at winning it. It didn’t happen.”

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 107 anglers, 85 limits (10 fewer than Thursday), 8 fours, 7 threes, 3 twos, 3 ones, 1 zero (1 more than Thursday).

> Casey Scanlon missed the cut by about 2 pounds and finished 66th, but he had his spirits lifted by a couple nice gestures from local citizens. Earlier in the week, he lost his wallet, but it was later turned in – fully intact – and he got it back. Then, he discovered the hotel bill for he and roommate Brandon Coulter had been anonymously paid for.

> Brent Chapman called it a “strange tournament” after finishing 60th while Chris Zaldain has scrapped his deep-water plan and is committed to a shallow-water plan going forward. To check out Chapman’s tournament recap and Zaldain’s day-2 progress report, click here to read our Pro View Report.
