The Top 10 from day 1 at the Lake Chickamauga FLW Tour all caught lighter sacks on day 2. Michael Wooley came the closest to duplicating his previous day's haul, and he finds himself atop the leaderboard at the midway point.

Wooley, a second-year pro who's competing in his home state of Tennessee, boxed a day-best 23-05 on Friday for a 2-day total of 49-07. He'll enter the weekend with a 4-pound advantage as he pursues his initial tour-level victory.

Day-1 leader Bill McDonald traded places with Wooley after catching a little more than half of what he brought to the stage on day 1. The Indiana veteran's 15-09 bag gave him a 45-05 aggregate.

David Dudley jumped 19 places with a 23-04 and sits in 3rd with 42-02. Michael Neal held down his No. 4 position with an 18-05 stringer that boosted his total to 41-11.

Stetson Blaylock completed the Top 5 with 41-00 after a 22-09 bag catapulted him all the way from 28th.

Here's how the Top 10 stacks up, with red numbers in parentheses denoting deficit margins from the leader:

1. Michael Wooley: 49-07
2. Bill McDonald: 45-05 (4-02)
3. David Dudley: 42-02 (7-05)
4. Michael Neal: 41-11 (7-12)
5. Stetson Blaylock: 41-00 (8-07)
6. Cody Meyer: 40-00 (9-07)
7. John Cox: 39-06 (10-01)
8. Terry Bolton: 39-06 (10-01)
9. Charlie Ingram: 39-04 (10-03)
10. Clent Davis: 39-00 (10-07)

The bite on the relatively small Tennessee River impoundment toughened up for most as the angling pressure took its toll. The large congregations of fish in the "community holes" were pounded for a second consecutive day and even some of the small schools had moved or broken up – a phenomenon that might've been exacerbated by the lack of sun.

The field managed 101 limits on day 2, which was down by 22 from the previous day. Eight competitors zeroed – twice as many as on day 1.

Rookie Zack Birge, who came into the event at No. 4 in the Angler of the Year (AOY) standings, saw what was shaping up to be his first non-money finish turn into a disastrous scenario on Friday. His day-2 weight, which exceeded 16 pounds, was disqualified for using his outboard motor to facilitate the technique known as "long-lining" or "strolling."

Wooley's best action occurred considerably later on day 2 than it had on day 1.

Long-lining, which consists of extending the cast and lengthening the retrieve of a moving bait by tossing the bait out and then driving away from it with the reel spool open, is legal under FLW Tour rules if the trolling motor is used for such a purpose. Birge, who ended up 137th after the DQ, may have had issues with his trolling motor and might've been unaware of the prohibition against using the big engine.

The remaining anglers are expected to get what many of them are hoping for on Saturday – a big dose of sunshine to properly position the post-spawn fish on the ledges. The air temperature is expected to creep into the low 90s with a southwesterly breeze reaching 7 mph.

The field, which was reduced to 20 anglers on Friday, will be cut to the Top 10 following the day-3 weigh-in. The winner will be determined Sunday based on highest 4-day weight.

Wooley Had to Wait

> Day 2: 5, 23-05 (10, 49-07)

Wooley is thrilled with his current position, but he said his substantial lead won't affect the way he fishes on day 3.

"I couldn't be more happy and excited to be where I am," he said. "I haven't been trying to save anything – I'm catching as much as possible every day.

"It's nice having a cushion, but I'm not looking at it that way. I looking to go out and catch 20-plus pounds again tomorrow, and then do it again on Sunday."

He ran the same program as on day 1 and caught his fish off the same cover, but it was much later when they started biting today (after 10 o'clock). He then compiled the majority of his weight over the span of a half-hour.

"I moved down about 75 yards (from where he fished on day 1), and then it was game on. Once I found them again, I caught them one after another."

His bag was topped by a 7 3/4-pounder. He had one that was a pound heavier than that on his day-1 stringer and also lost one that he estimated at 8.

Bill McDonald caught some decent fish on day 2, but didn't connect with near the quality he'd found the previous day.

"That spot isn't holding a lot of fish, but there's some real quality there. I hope it'll hold up, but I won't know until I get there tomorrow. There seemed to be just as many there today as there was yesterday, but they only bite for so long and then they quit.

"If it doesn't happen, I've got other schools I can fish. I've culled off other places."

2nd: Smaller Bites for McDonald

> Day 2: 5, 15-09 (10, 45-05)

McDonald wasn't overly disappointed by his much-smaller day-2 bag.

"I was pleased with the day," he said. "I just never got a big bite today. I've fished clean so far and I'm putting everything in the boat, but those big bites are key. If you get one, you're right there."

A 4 1/2-pounder was the biggest specimen in his bag.

"There was a couple areas I didn't get to fish – there were people on them and I'm not a claim-jumper. Some of those guys didn't make the cut, so that should open things up for tomorrow. I'll just take what's given to me and do the best I can with it."

He had a limit from the ledges by 8:30 and made a few upgrades over the next 2 1/2 hours. Knowing he'd caught enough to advance, he went on a quest to find some large fish.

"I stayed deep all day and I got (fewer) bites. It was cloudy in the morning and I think these fish bite better when it's sunny. We're supposed to have sun tomorrow and they're projecting more current, so we'll see.

"I'll go catch what bites – I won't be holding anything back. I'm not in a points race, I'm in a check race."

3rd: Dudley Roped a Brute

> Day 2: 5, 23-04

An 8-pounder was the primary impetus behind Dudley's big jump in the standings with a sack that was second-best of the day.

"Those kind of fish go a long ways," the three-time AOY said.

It was his first keeper of the day and bit at around 8 o'clock. He said he had no difficulties getting it into his boat.

David Dudley's 8-pounder helped him move up 19 places in the standings.

He's been fishing a mixture of ledges and shallow cover, but anticipates spending the majority of day 3 on the drop-offs. He described his program as "just elementary Tennessee River fishing."

He's looking forward to less-crowded conditions on Saturday.

"With a lot of guys off the water, I'll probably fish more deeper stuff. That's going to free us up a lot, but I still plan to keep looking both deep and shallow. I'm definitely going to need a 20-plus pound bag to stay in the hunt."

4th: Neal Held his Ground

> Day 2: 5, 18-05 (10, 41-11)

Neal's sack was 5 pounds lighter than his day-1 haul, but he remained in the same position in which he started the day. He's about a pound further from the top slot than he was after Thursday.

"I'm glad to be where I'm at, but I dug myself a little bigger hole as far as the lead goes," he said. "I'm happy (to have caught) what I did because it was a lot tougher day for me.

"I don't really know why that was because the conditions weren't that much different, but I only got two bites on moving baits today. Everything else was dragging a jig or a worm."

He went through about a dozen keepers and his bag was topped by a 5 1/2-pounder. His co-angler caught one that was just an ounce short of 9 pounds.

"I think the pressure's getting to them. Something changed between practice and the start of the tournament because a lot of the schools don't have as many fish and some are gone completely. It'll be a lot better tomorrow because there'll be more open water and we'll be able to get on some of the community holes."

He thinks he'll need to average more than he caught on day 2 to have a chance to win.

"If I can get 21 or 22 each day, I should have a shot."

77th: Strader's Timing Off

> Day 2: 5, 11-10 (10, 26-14)

It was a disappointing event for Strader, who had a mediocre day 1 on his home lake and followed it up with an even more lackluster day 2.

"I said before that this was the tournament that worried me more than any other," he said. "The worst part about it is probably letting the home crowd down a little bit."

He refused to rub elbows with his fellow competitors in the community holes and his program of bouncing from place to place just didn't work out.

"It's all a timing thing. I wouldn't have done anything different on day 1 (if he had it to do over again), and today I should've stayed in the grass longer and just grinded it out. I fished for 4 hours and never got a bite, and that's when I started (moving).

"The whole thing today was they didn't start (pulling current) until late in the day. I was catching them when I left, but I just ran out of time."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 147 anglers, 101 limits (22 fewer than day 1), 13 fours, 9 threes, 9 twos, 6 ones, 8 zeroes (4 more than day 1).

> Jay Yelas caught a decent limit around docks on day 1, but that action went away on day 2 and he weighed just four small keepers to finish 106th. To read his competition recap, click here to check out our Pro View Report.
