Brown Camped In Less-Pressured Flint

Clint Brown says he learned pretty much everything he knows about bass fishing on the waters of Lake Seminole. Last week, all of that knowledge came in handy at the final Southeastern Rayovac Series.

The Bainbridge, Ga., resident spurned the more pressured areas around Spring Creek and opted to fish in the Flint River the entire event. He knew he was likely forgoing a shot at bigger fish by doing so, but he found a stretch of water that would produce a higher volume of bites.

Despite rising water conditions during the tournament, he was able to capitalize on areas that harbored late spawners over the first 2 days, then went with a swim jig and buzzbait around the same stretches of grass on the final day to close out his first Rayovac Series victory. He was one of just two finalists to catch a limit all 3 days and his 52-11 total was nearly 3 1/2 pounds better than runner-up Ken Ellis.

“This win is my biggest one ever,” Brown said. “It really means a lot to win on my home water with all of my family and friends there.”

Regarding his decision to stay in the Flint, he said it was all about being away from the fishing pressure of the other tournament competitors and trusting his instincts.

“Normally, our local tournaments are known for big bags and big fish that come from the main lake and Spring Creek,” he said. “I knew those places would get a lot of pressure so I chose to stay in the river because there’d be less pressure and it would produce more bites.

“I was trying to stay away and fish less pressured water rather than fish for big ones on the lake. Not that I wasn’t fishing for big ones, but those 25- to 29-pound sacks come from Spring Creek and the main lake. I knew with the pressure that wasn’t going to happen this week.”

Here are some details on how Brown conquered Seminole.

Practice

Brown said a rainy spring had kept the water elevated and stained, delaying the spawn for some bass, especially in the Flint. With the water cleaner during practice, he tried to locate as many bedders as possible.

“I didn’t do a lot of casting,” he said. “I search for bream beds with bass around them and also found some spawning bass doing that. I tried to find as many as I could. These were probably the last wave of the year.”

As practice wore on, he started to see heavier concentrations of boats on the main lake and in and around Spring Creek, which served as his cue to find less-pressured water.

“That’s when I picked an area in the Flint River to focus on,” he added. “I wound up catching all of my fish roughly from Wingate’s Lunker Lodge to Faceville Landing. I saw less boats in that part of the lake in practice, so that’s where I focused.

“I felt like the fish I found spawning, if I could get a couple bites fishing and a few spawners, I could make the cut. I wanted to use the spawning fish to get to Saturday because I new I could just go fishing on the final day because I knew it’d been fished less.”

While others took their chances fishing standing timber or deeper grass, Brown spent the first 2 days sight-fishing as many bedding fish as he could – yes, in 80-degree water – but not before he tried to get a good foundation combing stretches of grass.

“I tried to catch something each day before I went to my spawning fish,” he said.

The plan didn’t exactly go as he’d hoped as his livewell was empty once 10 a.m. rolled around both Thursday and Friday. Once the sun got up in the sky, his sight-fishing plan kicked in. He totaled a stout 18-07 on day 1 and followed it up with 16-01 on Friday to make the cut. On day 1, four of his fish were caught sight-fishing with the other coming on a topwater frog. On Saturday, he looked at three of his weigh-in fish and the other two fell for a topwater.

His 34-08 total put him in 2nd entering the final day, 1 pound behind Texan Tim Reneau, who was fishing Seminole for the first time. Entering the final day, Brown knew he had plenty of options as far as places he could go. The water had continued to rise – 6 inches per day since Wednedsay night, he said – so sight-fishing was going to be a real challenge. He knew he wasn’t going to abandon the Flint.

“I really didn’t have a plan,” he said. “I had a bunch of other stuff to go catch fish. The more I kept fishing and kept catching fish and knowing nobody else was up there, I figured it was my best bet.”

He started Saturday on a stretch of grass that he’d caught fish on before, but hadn’t fished it in the tournament yet. He used a shad-pattern swim jig with a craw trailer to coax four bites in 30 minutes that gave him roughly 12 pounds.

“After not catching anything in the mornings the first 2 days, when I caught those on Saturday, that really propelled me,” he said. “I knew I just needed a couple more bites.”

He fished some bream beds and came upon another spawner to finish his limit for 14 pounds before going back to the hydrilla he fished in the morning

“I came back to that same stretch of grass at 1:30 and threw a buzzbait and caught a 5 and a 3 to cull out two 2-pounders,” he said. “I just burned it over the grass and it was more of a reaction bite. They wouldn’t bite anything under the surface there.”

The grass he fished was nearly topped out in practice in 7 feet of water, but when the water came up, the fish positioned on the edges of the hydrilla. He knew the 5-pounder took him over the 15-pound mark, but he wasn’t sure it was going to be enough to overtake Reneau.

“I didn’t think I’d won, but I thought it’d give me a chance,” he said.
