A day like the one Andy Morgan had Friday at the Beaver Lake FLW Tour is a good indication as to why he's the top-ranked angler in the world.

Beaver was at its stingy worst on day 2 of the Tour's annual visit and the day was shortened by 45 minutes due to a powerful thunderstorm at launch time. Still, Morgan managed to catch a 15 1/2-pound sack, which was the best in the 154-angler field by nearly 2 pounds, to take over the lead at the midway point with a 28-09 total.

Veteran Darrell Robertson, who hadn't made a Top-20 cut since 2011, sacked 13-09 and climbed to 2nd with 27-14. Matt Arey, last year's winner at Beaver, stayed in 3rd with 27-02 after bringing a 12-04 sack to the scale.

Bryan Thrift slid two places to 4th with a 10-11 bag for a 26-04 aggregate, and Stetson Blaylock rounded out the Top 5 with a 12-08 haul that pushed his total to 26-01.

Here's how the Top 10 stacks up, with deficit margins from the leader denoted by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Andy Morgan: 28-09
2. Darrel Robertson: 27-14 (0-11)
3. Matt Arey: 27-02 (1-07)
4. Bryan Thrift: 26-04 (2-05)
5. Stetson Blaylock: 26-01 (2-08)
6. Tracy Adams: 25-10 (2-15)
7. Larry Nixon: 25-03 (3-06)
8. Scott Canterbury: 25-00 (3-09)
9. Cody Meyer: 24-13 (3-12)
10. Peter Thliveros: 24-12 (3-13)

Two pros suffered disqualifications – one for day 1 and the other for day 2. Both were under FLW Tour Rule 13 (permitted fishing locations), but the infractions were entirely dissimilar.

Drew Benton had his first-day weight erased when officials were notified that he'd fished within 50 feet of a marked "No Fishing Zone" in a commercial marina. He'd caught 12-11 Thursday and was in 19th place to start day 2, but is now credited only with the two fish for 3-08 that he caught Friday and finished in 153rd place. For more, click here.

Mark Rose and co-angler Nick Loeffelman Jr. had their day-2 weights nullified following a mechanical breakdown en route to the weigh-in. They hitched a ride with pro Cody Kelley, but left the boat adrift and unattended without proper tie-off or anchoring. Rose estimated that he had 8 pounds in his livewell, which was also his day-1 weight, and he finished 142nd. For more on that, click here.

Other competitors had bad days that didn't include penalties, including day-1 leader Jacob Wheeler, who managed just three fish for 4-15 and plummeted to 32nd. Jim Moynagh, who started the day in 12th, also sacked only three for 5-04 and ended up in 51st.

A couple of longtime pros made big moves to get into the Top 10. Larry Nixon caught a stout 13-04 to jump from 29th to 7th and Peter Thliveros weighed 12-12 to climb from 27th to 10th.

Darrel Robertson made his first Top-20 cut since 2011.

The bite was much tougher than on day 1, when 135 anglers weighed limits. Only 88 achieved that feat on Friday and there were seven zeroes (compared to none on day 1). Much of that could be attributed to the huge number of bedding fish that were caught on opening day.

The sun is expected to reappear for day 3 and the high temperature is expected to reach 80 degrees, so there may be opportunities for the remaining 20 anglers to hunt for additional spawners. The wind could be a limiting factor in that regard, though, as it's forecast to blow at 16 mph out of the west/southwest.

Only the Top 10 will survive the day-3 cut, with the winner determined Sunday based on highest 4-day weight.

Morgan's Action Sporadic

> Day 2: 5, 15-07 (10, 28-09)

Morgan's weigh-in fish were scattered throughout the day – he caught one at 9:30, one at 10:30, two around noon and the last just before his 3 o'clock check-in time.

"I kind of moved around a little and fished some different water (than on day 1)," he said. "I picked off a few more bed-fish and I've caught all of those that I know about now. I'm out of the decent ones I had, so I hope to catch some just fishing now."

He weighed all largemouths, the biggest of which was a 4-pounder. He lost one that weighed about 3 1/2.

"I'm going to have to get pretty fortunate to stay in the running just fishing. I'm sure some guys found some more today, especially some of the guys with the later check-ins.

"I'll start off just fishing and look as I go. The wind never really blew today and I need some kind of condition to get them to really bite. If we could get some more wind I think I could catch them pretty good."

He got only 2 days of practice, as another commitment cost him his third day.

"I just came here and rolled the dice," he said. "I've already got to the championship made (via his 2014 Angler of the Year title), so I decided I was only going to fish for largemouths and not even look for a secondary option."

2nd: Robertson on Good Ones

> Day 2: 5, 13-09 (10, 27-14)

Robertson nearly prevailed at Beaver a decade ago, but had what would've been the winning fish bounce off his windshield and back into the lake on his final cast. He finished 9 ounces behind winner Andre Moore.

Ten years later he faces a deficit of just 11 ounces headed into the weekend.

"I think I stand a good chance because I'm around some pretty good fish," he said. "I lost a couple – one of them got into a brush top and got wrapped up – but that's life. I'm tickled to make it this far because I've had a dry spell for a couple years.

"I've caught some sight-fishing, but I've also caught some out in front of where the beds are."

His last two fish of the day were 4-pounders and they came from the same place where he'd gotten four bites on day 1. That's where he'll start day 3.

He has some alternatives to what he's been doing, but he'd prefer not to resort to them.

Matt Arey had to catch a couple of bed-fish he'd been hoping to save in order to get rid of squeakers like this one.

"Beaver's a tough lake, but there's lots of things you can do to catch 8 pounds. You need to catch more than that, though, to keep up with the guys who are left.

"No matter what, it's been a good tournament and I'm glad I've shown that I didn't totally forget how to fish."

3rd: Slower Day for Arey

> Day 2: 5, 12-04 (10, 27-02)

Arey's bag was more than 2 1/2 pounds lighter than the one he caught on day 1, but he maintained his position in the standings as he pursues his second straight Beaver victory.

"It was a little more of a grind today and I burned up two 2 1/2-pound bed-fish that I'd been hoping to save," he said. "Those got me to my weight and allowed me to cull a couple of 13-inch spots.

"I felt like getting over the 12-pound mark was huge to stay in contention. You need to be catching 12 to 15 pounds a day to be there at the end and I didn't want to fall that far behind."

He pulled two of his day-2 weigh-in fish off of beds and has one decent-size spawner to try for on day 3.

"I'm excited, but I'm a little concerned. Even just fishing, I'm still catching spawning fish and when you burn them up they're not going to replenish. The conditions haven't been right for more of them to move up.

"We're supposed to get some sunshine tomorrow, so maybe I'll slip off for a little big and go look for some new ones later in the day. There might be some doors opened that haven't been open all week."

4th: Thrift Still In It

> Day 2: 5, 10-11 (10, 26-04)

Thrift's weight was off by 5 pounds from day 1, but he didn't fall out of contention like he did on day 2 last year.

"I'm happy with it," he said. "I'm actually real pleased to catch that. I fished real clean – I didn't lose any – and the one good bite I had I put in the boat."

His stringer was topped by a 3 1/2-pounder.

Bryan Thrift came in with a bag that was 5 pounds lighter than his day-1 haul, but it cost him only two places in the standings.

"I stuck with my game plan and I had a limit by 9:30 fishing a little deeper. Then I hit the bank with that (Damiki Stinger) and caught my biggest one and two other decent ones. Before that I had two 12-inch spots and I was able to get rid of them.

"I'm never real confident on Beaver and I'm thinking I'm going to have to change up for tomorrow because 10 pounds is probably the max for what I can do this way. A lot of those fish have been caught and there aren't any more coming. I'll run around and hit some new water and pretty much go practicing."

32nd: Wheeler Lost Several

> Day 2: 3, 4-15 (8, 19-13)

Wheeler said his own poor execution was primarily to blame for his bad day.

"I still had quite a few bites, but it was just one of those days when everything unraveled," he said. "It wasn't the pressure (of leading) – I've been in that position before.

"If you'd told me before the tournament that I was going to finish 32nd, I'd have been happy with that because that gets me some good points and puts me back where I need to be (in the AOY chase). But with the opportunity that I had, I'm still pretty disappointed."

He got eight keeper bites, but lost five of them. Included among those was a fish that topped 4 pounds and another that was over 3.

"If I'd landed everything that bite, I'd have been good to go," he said. "But that's part of fishing and it's going to happen. I can't think of anything I'd have done any differently."

His primary pattern was flipping laydowns with a Gene Larew Biffle Bug. He also caught some quality fish on a paddle-tail worm rigged wacky-style.

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 154 anglers, 88 limits (47 fewer than day 1), 18 fours, 21 threes, 12 twos, 8 ones, 7 zeroes (7 more than day 1).

> Moynagh was happy to stay within the $10,000 check cut-off after his miserable day. "This is a psychological game in a lot of ways and I didn't have my mind right this morning," he said. "I'd caught my five best bed-fish yesterday and I knew I'd be hard-pressed to come up with that kind of weight again and I ended up in a half-panic mode for part of the day. A guy should just go out and fish and not let that get to him, but it was eating at me."

> Jay Yelas caught sacks in the 9-pound range each day to finish 52nd. He got just five bites each day and fished for more than 7 hours on day 2 without catching a keeper. To read his competition recap, click here.
