Bradley Hallman has fished enough bass tournaments, top tier and otherwise, to know to expect the unexpected. Still, it took him a while to process exactly what was going on at Grand Lake in the days leading up to the Central Rayovac Series tournament there last week.

“We’ve got zebra mussels in there now,” he said. “They weren’t as prolific before like they are now. They’ve really filtered the water now, but there are guys I know who will do they do because it’s Grand Lake. They struggled last week.”

The clear water – “We’ve never been able to see 5 to 7 feet in this lake,” he added – coupled with a massive wave of fish moving onto flats to spawn created the perfect sight-fishing storm, and Hallman took full advantage when he could. When thunderstorms, some violent, made it difficult to sight-fish, he cleaned up with a topwater walking bait to collect his first career Rayovac Series win.

He caught at least 20 pounds each day and averaged a tick under 22 pounds to win the 3-day event with 65-15, more than 5 pounds better than runner-up Jonathan Henry.

“To win at home was really special to me,” Hallman said. “It meant a lot to win one there as opposed to one in Alabama. I had a lot of friends and family there. I’ve spent a tremendous amount of time on that pond over the years and it meant a lot to be that successful over three days.”

Here’s how he did it.

Practice

Hallman didn’t have a ton of time to devote to practice at Grand. He was fresh off the Sam Rayburn Reservoir Texas Rayovac where he finished 45th the week prior. On the Sunday before the Grand Lake event, though, he fished in a Nichols Marine team tournament at Grand and took 19th with nearly 20 pounds.

“I hadn’t been to Grand since last spring and a friend had told me how clear it was,” he said. “I know guys here don’t sight fish, but I had a feeling that if they were spawning, that’s what we’d be doing.”

Competing in the team event confirmed his suspicion that the fish were up shallow and he made up his mind that sight-fishing would be his game plan for the Rayovac.

“After (that tournament), I knew that was the deal,” he said. “I did nothing but run the trolling motor Monday through Wednesday looking for them. I put all of my chips in on sight-fishing. They were there from one end of the lake to the other. You could see them everywhere.

“There were more fish up than I’d ever seen sight-fishing on any other lake. You’d pull up and look and see a 4, a 3, another 4, a 3. It was ridiculous.”

He said the notion of sight-fishing on Grand Lake, especially in a multi-day tournament, is so foreign that he doesn’t believe he’s ever read an article on the topic.

“These fish have been trained for decades to spawn in 2 to 4 feet,” he said. “Now that’s it clear, they’re still spawning in shallow water and it opened up a whole new bag of tricks for us.”

He estimated the bottom 75 percent of the lake was gin clear when the tournament started.

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 20-08
> Day 2: 5, 23-03
> Day 3: 5, 22-04
> Total = 15, 65-15

A fog delay pushed back take off on day 1 and Hallman was in the later flight so he didn’t have the pick of where he could start. He went to secondary areas and caught just six keepers. He did nothing but flip a craw bait and a white tube to fish on beds to come in with 20-08.

The storms rolled in on day 2, but he was still bent on looking for spawners or cruisers. He started on a fish that spooked easily, but wound up not getting it to bite.

“I picked up a Spook because it was the only non-sight fishing bait I had tied on and went down a flat and caught a 4-pounder,” he said.

The topwater pattern paid off as he caught roughly 10 keepers and weighed 23-03 to take over the lead entering the final day.

A torrential downpour greeted the 10 finalists so Hallman opted to stick with the spook.

“I caught a 4-pounder right away and a 3 1/2 on my next cast,” he said. “I kept it in my hand until it stopped raining. That Spook opened it up at the end. I knew other guys were still trying to sight-fish, but as long as I was around those spawning areas I figured I could get bit with the Spook.”

He did manage to wrangle several sight fish out from behind docks on the final day to supplement his topwater catches.

“I smoked everything I could catch,” he said. “I was too worried about (Todd) Castledine and (Jason) Christie catching me from behind.

“I was catching fish in all three phases – I caught them off the bed, I caught some cruising and I caught some post-spawners,” he added. “This tournament is going to change the way everyone looks at Grand this time of year.”

Winning Gear Notes

> Sight-fishing gear: 7’6” heavy-action unnamed flipping rod, unnamed casting reel (6.4:1 gear ratio), 20-pound unnamed fluorocarbon line, 1/4-oz. unnamed tungsten flipping weight, 4/0 unnamed flipping hook, Zoom Speed Craw (green-pumpkin), unnamed tube (white).

> Topwater gear: 7’ medium-action unnamed casting rod, unnamed casting reel, 20-pound unnamed monofilament line, Heddon One Knocker Spook (bone).

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – "I m sure being comfortable at home had a lot to do with it. I’m sure the Spook was the thing that put me over the top. It really opened up a whole new lake for me because that Spook bite is the next thing that’s coming. That’ll be the next two- to three-week bite. I was able to open that Pandora’s box early. I had no idea it would happen that way. I had no intention of catching 20 on a Spook to start the day and then still have sight fish to look at.”

> Performance edge – "My Phoenix boat. I got it two weeks ago. I’ve had the 921 before, but now I have the 920 and it is, hands down, the baddest machine I’ve ever been in. With that Mercury OptiMax XS, it’s bad to the bone.”

Notable

> Hallman said his decision to bypass an opportunity to fish the remaining four FLW Tour events was based solely on the fact that he wants to spend as much time at home with his family as he can right now. He previously fished the Elite Series from 2006-11.

“I do want to fish (the tour), but it’s a lifestyle deal,” he said, “and sponsor commitments and everything take you away from home. With all the travel and back to backs, I don’t feel like I can perform at high level when I’m thinking I want to be at home.”

He also figured he’d need to average a Top-40 finish or better over the final four events to even have a shot at finishing among the Top 100 in points and earn priority qualification status for 2016. Instead, he’s going to focus on finishing among the Top 10 in points in either the Central or Texas division of the Rayovac Series.

> Regarding the zebra mussel invasion of Grand, Hallman thinks one good high-water event where the water gets muddy for a prolonged period of time and sun penetration is reduced will go a long ways to blunting their spread.

“They got into Eufaula a few years back and one year the lake got high and muddy and they stopped spreading,” he said.
