It was a rerun of The JT Kenney Show on day 2 of the Lake Toho FLW Tour today.

While he didn’t wallop nearly 30 pounds as he did on Thursday, he still managed to come in with the heaviest stringer of the day despite facing a whole different set of conditions and a little more boat traffic while others who had strong starts to the event struggled to recapture their day-1 mojo.

Kenney’s solid 22-09 gives him 52-07 so far and he has opened up a commanding 12-pound, 10-ounce lead over Stacey King, who maintained the No. 2 spot with an 11-12 stringer that pushed his total to 39-13. Based on the confidence he’s exhibited so far and his production through two days, it would seem as though a catastrophic meltdown would have to occur between now and Sunday to prevent Kenney from claiming his second career Tour win.

“It was easy yesterday,” Kenney said. “It wasn’t easy today. I’ve used up about half of my stuff and the tournament’s half over. Now, that doesn’t mean people didn’t beat up my other stuff that I haven’t been to yet, but I still have a lot of places I haven’t fished.”

Scott Canterbury sacked 19-13 today and moved up six spots to 3rd with 38-14. Alex Davis caught an 8-15 kicker today to anchor his 14-05 bag, which pushed him into 4th with 34-14. Luke Clausen followed up his 20-00 effort from day 1 with 14-07 and sits in 5th with 34-07 at the venue where he won the 2006 Bassmaster Classic.

To put Kenney’s strong start in perspective, he’s 12-10 clear of King in 2nd, while King is 9-01 ahead of 20th-place Matt Stefan, who has 30-12.

Here's a look at the Top 10 at the halfway point, with deficit margin from Kenney indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. JT Kenney: 52-07
2. Stacey King: 39-13 (12-10)
3. Scott Canterbury: 38-14 (13-09)
4. Alex Davis: 34-14 (17-09)
5. Luke Clausen: 34-07 (18-00)
6. Ramie Colson Jr.: 34-01 (18-06)
7. Shane Lehew: 33-02 (19-05)
8. Stetson Blaylock: 33-01 (19-06)
9. Brad Knight: 32-15 (19-08)
10. Wesley Strader: 32-15 (19-08)

The Kissimmee Chain showed off its big-fish potential once again today with several kickers in the 8-pound range, however, once Ramie Colson, Jr., brought an 11-00 brute to the stage, the race for big bass was pretty much over. Colson’s catch is tied for the third-biggest fish weighed in during an FLW Tour event. The record is an 11-14 caught by Jim Nolan at the Santee-Cooper event in 1996. That fish occupied a good bit of Colson’s 16-11 stringer that moved him up to 6th place.

Tour rookie Marshall Deakins and Troy Morrow both rebounded from 11-pound bags on day 1 to work their way inside the Top-20 cut. Deakins caught 20-03 and made the weekend in 17th while Morrow managed 19-04 and is 18th with 31-03. Jason Reyes and Charlie Ingram both slipped out of the Top 5 and missed the cut after failing to crack 9 pounds today.

The change in conditions today certainly played a role in the leaderboard shuffling that went on. It was mostly overcast, but the wind turned around and blew from the north and northeast and that left some anglers scrambling for new water. Aside from a cranking bite that’s going on in and around the canals that connect the lakes due to the current moving through the chain, it’s been mostly a soft-plastics showcase with slow presentations the most effective way to entice fish on and around beds to bite.

The temperature will dip into the mid 50s Friday night around Kissimmee and top out around 72 on Saturday with clouds and another round of north-northeast wind blowing 10 to 20 mph. The field will be reduced to the Top 10 after day 3 with the winner determined Sunday by highest cumulative weight.

Kenney brings one of his keepers back to the boat on day 2.

Slower Morning For Kenney

> Day 2: 5, 22-09 (10, 52-07)

The morning magic that carried Kenney through day 1 didn’t repeat itself today. He had to scrounge around for bites until the afternoon when he collided with a few bigger fish.

“I ran around a lot today,” he said. “It turned into an afternoon deal down there (on Kissimmee), when they all of a sudden started biting. I went to spots where I knew right where to throw and the fish didn’t bite.

“I got a little frustrated around 10:30. I didn’t have five yet. I had two 13-inchers and two 4-pounders. I was anxious to get back in the mix. I didn’t get flustered. I never strayed. I know what I’m doing and I know it will work.”

He finished off his limit around 11 and then upgraded from there. He didn’t go back over areas he picked over yesterday, but did notice a surge in boat traffic around where he was fishing.

“I caught a couple 4-pounders and then bailed out of there and went around to a few one-fish places,” he said. “They just weren’t biting good, but later in the afternoon I’d make a flip and the bait wouldn’t get to the bottom.”

He said he lost two fish that would’ve definitely helped – one that he saw and one he didn’t.

“The one I didn’t see, I couldn’t turn it,” he said. “It wasn’t my equipment. They’re just in the thick stuff and when the line turns sometimes, I call it transferring – they transfer the hook out of their mouths and into the weeds.”

It appears the conditions Saturday will mirror Friday pretty closely, but that doesn’t seem to faze Kenney, who still has a number of options he hasn’t tapped into yet.

“I have a lot more fresh water to fish, to me at least,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s been hammered on these last two days, but I still have stuff to go to.”

2nd: King May Stay In Toho

> Day 2: 5, 11-12 (10, 39-13)

King has a couple suspicions as to why the fishing tailed off somewhat in what proved to be his key area the first two days.

“I think this (cold) front played a part in it,” he said. “And there were four or five other guys in there hammering on the same stuff I was. I got a few bites early this morning, including a couple 4-pounders and several small fish, but not big ones.”

When the sun broke through in the afternoon, he was hoping to capitalize on more fish getting active, but that never seemed to materialize.

“I thought more fish would get active and move up, but that must’ve been a post-front thing because they didn’t,” he added.

He fished within sight of Kenney for part of the day and wound up bringing 10 keepers into the boat. As for tomorrow, he sensed his best spot may be fished out. He’s even considering staying in Toho since he’s starting to feel a bit fatigued.

“That north wind won’t be conducive to that area and it’s going to be cold in the morning so I’m not sure what I’ll do,” he said. “I have an area on Toho where I can catch them. I’m just tired and wore out right now. I might just stay up here and see what I can do.”

3rd: Canterbury Feeling Confident

> Day 2: 5, 19-13 (10, 38-14)

Canterbury was the beneficiary of some good fortune and a good friend this morning. As he raced across Lake Kissimmee, he had an issue with his prop, so he had to limp to where he intended to fish. On his second flip, he caught a 7-pounder to set the tone for another strong day.

“I didn’t have a spare (prop) with me, but JT (Kenney) was nearby and was kind enough to take the time to bring me his spare,” he said. “It was really good today.”

He moved around a little more than he had on day 1, but made sure to go back through the area that produced an 8-pounder for him Thursday. Today, he stuck a 5-pounder there.

Stacey King had a slower day Friday, but still managed a couple 4-pounders.

“I caught quite a few fish today, but I don’t know if I had the overall quality that I had yesterday,” he said. “I had a 7 and a 5 today and those go a long way down here. I’ve caught some on the outside grass line and some on the inside grass line and some punching. I’m just fishing confident and fishing slow and so far I’m fishing clean. That’s what you need to do to compete.”

He pretty much conceded that this is Kenney’s tournament to lose, but he’s focused on getting the year started with a strong finish to continue on the momentum of his runner-up finish in last year’s Forrest Wood Cup.

“For me to win, he’d have to stumble bad,” he said. “He’s on a tear and he seems to be really dialed in. He’s a good friend of mine and I wish him the best. I’d love to make a Top-5 or finish 2nd or 3rd. I came down here to start the year off good. Every ounce counts so if I move up or stay where I’m at, it’d be great for me.”

4th: Another Giant for Davis

> Day 2: 5, 14-05 (10, 34-14)

Davis is certainly around big fish. He had an 8-05 in his bag yesterday and nearly cracked the 9-pound barrier today.

“I’ve always said that if I could get lucky and catch a big one, I might do alright down here,” he said. “Finally, it’s my time.”

There was some distinct differences between days 1 and 2 for him despite his place in the Top 5.

His keeper count fell off dramatically today, though. After leaning into 20 fish on Thursday, he managed just five today.

“Four 12 1/2-inchers and a giant,” he quipped.

He also noted the bigger fish took a little more enticing today.

“To me, the morning I practiced down there, I didn’t get many bites in the morning,” he said. “Then all of a sudden, 1:30 happened and from then until dark it just happened. When they start biting you can go to anything that looks right and they’ll start biting. It’s just a time of day thing.

“That big one yesterday, I pitched in there and the grass shook around so I flipped back in the hole and she got it right away. Today, I had to shimmy the bait. Yesterday, they took it it on the way down.”

5th: Late Flurry Helped Clausen

> Day 2: 5, 14-07 (10, 34-07)

Clausen is confident he’s doing the right thing to catch quality fish, but today was more of a struggle than Thursday.

“I was worried about catching five at one point,” he said. “It got pretty horrible this morning. I’m not all that happy. I would’ve loved to have caught a hell of a lot more.”

He pretty much duplicated what he did yesterday for much of today, but opted to go to some new spots later in the day that paid off.

Luke Clausen thinks the best opportunity for a high finish this week is in Lake Kissimmee.

“I’d caught a lot where I’d been fishing, but I ran some new water and caught a few I wound up weighing,” he said. “A lot of the fish we’re catching are on beds that we can’t see and there aren’t a lot of new ones coming. You have to play the wind, too, and pick areas that are getting better and avoid the ones that aren’t.”

He plans to keep locking down to Lake Kissimmee for as long as he’s still in contention.

“I think that’s where it’ll be won and your odds of catching more quality fish are better down there,” he added.

6th: 11-Pounder a Thrill for Colson

> Day 2: 5, 16-11 (10, 34-01)

The area where Colson caught his 11-pounder wasn’t a special out-of-the-way spot or isolated piece of cover. It was just part of the area he’d been fishing the first couple days.

“It just happened,” he said. “It’s known as a good bedding area and I’ve been sitting back off of it and pitching up and dead-sticking my bait and letting it sit.

“That one in particular, I saw the water boil, but I never saw her until we got her close to the net.”

He initially thought that maybe he’d hooked into an alligator judging by how his line started heading out away from the cover.

“When I hit her, she just took off for open water,” he said. “I told my co-angler, ‘I think it might be a gator.’ She pulled me about 20 yards and then I got her to about 10 from the boat and she came up and flipped on her side and I saw her for a split second. My co-angler looked at me and said, ‘My God, what a fish.’ I said the same thing. I couldn’t have scripted it any better getting her into the boat.”

It’s the biggest bass of Colson’s life, but he sure wishes it had some bigger companions in his weigh bag. He lost nine fish today that he set the hook on only to have the fish throw the bait.

“The first five I hooked I lost them all,” he said. “A couple were 4s and some others were solid keepers. I don’t know what was different today versus yesterday. I caught everything that bit on day 1. Today, I’d set the hook and they’d come up and then the hook comes flying back at you.”

He’s happy that regardless of where he finishes this weekend, he’ll improve upon his season-opening result at Okeechobee last year and get out of Florida with a good start to the year.

“Any time I can come to Florida and have a finish like this, or even get a check, I’m very pleased,” he added.

140th: Head-Scratcher For Yelas

> Day 2: 3, 4-00 (8, 11-13)

Jay Yelas came into the tournament feeling he’d had a pretty good practice. He felt confident that he’d be able to get himself around some fish that were just moving in to spawn.

His plans fell apart from the get-go. He followed up a 7-13 limit from day 1 with three fish for 4-00 today and would up 140th, nearly matching his 149th-place showing at last year’s Okeechobee season opener.

“That’s the way tournaments go sometimes,” he said. “Everything fell apart. On Thursday, I went to where I’d had the most bites in practice and between my co-angler and me we caught nine keepers – all runts. Today, I scrapped that and went to an area I didn’t fish yesterday but had practiced there. I fished there until noon and didn’t have a bite. I don’t know how to explain that. They must’ve left.”

His main technique was flipping worms and Senkos and working them real slow or dead-sticking them.

“With these Florida bass, I’ve had this happen to me before,” he said. “I just don’t know where to go to find them. It’s like you can go to a creek channel or a main-lake point or go run docks. It’s just acres of grass. I’m scratching my head. This is a funny game sometimes.”
