Greg Hackney separated himself from the pack of leaders at the Cayuga Lake Bassmaster Elite Series with a 23-01 stringer on day 2. Afterward, he admitted that his emphasis in western New York is on points rather than pounds, dollar signs or trophies.

The veteran from Louisiana leads the Toyota Tundra Angler of the Year (AOY) race and he badly wants to remain in that position through next month's championship event in Michigan. An Elite points title would give him the third of the sport's four crown jewels – he's already won a Forrest Wood Cup and an FLW Tour AOY.

"I'm totally focused on the Angler of the Year," he said. "I haven't even really thought about the tournament other than trying to do as well as I can, and that's the truth. That's what's motivating me this week."

So far, it's working. With a 43-06 total, he'll carry a lead of a little more than 3 pounds over 2nd-place Todd Faircloth into the weekend. That bulge is greater than the margin that separated the Top 16 on the leaderboard after day 1.

Faircloth boxed 20-02 for the second straight day for a 40-04 total. Kevin Short, who's making a furious late-season run toward a Bassmaster Classic berth after sitting out a tournament earlier this year when a tornado struck his home, sacked 19-14 to move up six places to 3rd with 39-04.

Edwin Evers jumped from 8th to 4th with a 19-05 bag for a 39-01 aggregate. Jacob Powroznik held onto the No. 5 position with an 18-10 stringer that gave him a 38-14 total.

Here's how the current Top 12 stacks up (red numbers in parentheses indicate each angler's deficit from the leader):

1. Greg Hackney: 43-06
2. Todd Faircloth: 40-04 (3-02)
3. Kevin Short: 39-04 (4-02)
4. Edwin Evers: 39-01 (4-05)
5. Jacob Powroznik: 38-14 (4-08)
6. Chris Zaldain: 37-04 (6-02)
7. Casey Scanlon: 37-03 (6-03)
8. Mark Davis: 37-01 (6-05)
9. Brandon Palaniuk: 36-15 (6-07)
10. Brent Chapman: 36-07 (6-15)
11. Jared Lintner: 36-06 (7-00)
12. Fred Roumbanis: 35-08 (7-14)

Kevin VanDam's chances of competing in his 25th straight Classic took a serious hit as he weighed just 10 pounds and slipped to 70th place in the event. That knocked him down to 53rd on the updated AOY list and if he's still below 50th after the weekend, he won't qualify for the AOY Championship at the Bays de Noc in his home state.

About his only opportunity to advance would be for Zaldain (49th in the points), Roumbanis (48th) and Scanlon (42nd) to all tank on day 3 and fall back below him. Chapman (52nd) could also be a factor in that equation.

VanDam finished 70th or lower in four of the seven points events this year. In the 8 prior seasons of the Elite Series, his worst showing in a tournament he actually competed in was 59th at California's Clear Lake in 2010.

Conditions were different on day 2 – the rain that had soaked anglers for much of day 1 didn't arrive until the weigh-in was under way. Overall weights were about the same, however, as it took an average of just over 14 pounds to make the Top 50 and advance to day 3.

Zaldain rocketed up 22 places with a 21-08 bag that's second-best for the event behind Hackney's. Lintner gained 10 places with a 19-06 stringer and Roumbanis climbed from 16th to 12th with a 17-12 haul.

Todd Faircloth has caught a 20-02 sack on each of the tournament's first 2 days.

Rookie Mike Kernan, who began the day in a 2nd-place tie with Davis, managed just three fish for 7-12 and fell all the way to 48th. Others who exited the Top 12 were Nate Wellman (11th to 46th with 9-11 on day 2), Matt Herren (tied for 12th to 13th, 15-12) and David Walker (tied for 12th to 17th, 14-02).

The forecast for the Union Springs, N.Y. area on day 3 predicts showers throughout the day with a high temperature of 77 degrees. A southeast wind should top out at 8 mph.

The field will be reduced to 12 following Saturday's weigh-in, with the winner determined Sunday based on highest cumulative weight.

No Misses for Hackney

> Day 2: 5, 23-01 (10, 43-06)

Hackney, who won the FLW Tour event at Pickwick in June, said the biggest difference between day 1 and day 2 for him was that he landed all of his bites on the latter.

"I just fished real clean and I didn't lose any," he said. "Yesterday I lost a couple that would've helped. I didn't get any more bites today, but I caught everything that bit."

He once again fished within sight of numerous competitors, but that hasn't been an issue. The only thing he'd divulge about his pattern is that he's "fishing grass."

"The same group (of anglers) was there again today, but I'm fishing a little different and I haven't had a problem. I'm able to move around inside of them."

He caught four keepers in the first hour and made several culls throughout the day. He caught the last one that accompanied him to the scale at 2:30.

"I don't know if I had a 5-pounder today – they were all pretty much identical. They were all beautiful fish. I'd thought that a couple of them were bigger that the rest, but when I bagged them up they all looked just alike."

He thinks he'll need to maintain a 20-pound pace in order to win.

"This lake has got lots of fish in it, and no doubt lots of big ones. The lake itself is fixing to get bigger tomorrow (due to the field reduction) and I know that'll help a lot of guys.

"I'll take whatever I can catch. If I keep getting bit, I'll keep pumping on them until I catch at least 20."

2nd: Faircloth Not Alone

> Day 2: 5, 20-02 (10, 40-04)

After day 1, Faircloth was pretty certain he had his best spot all to himself. Today he discovered that he's sharing it with Zaldain.

"I stayed around until 10:30 yesterday just to see if anybody would show up and I never saw anybody," he said. "Today I'm fishing there and (Zaldain) pulls up, and he told me he got there at about 11:30 yesterday.

"There's a lot of fish there, but I don't know if there's enough for both of us to last."

He has some backup stuff that could produce – he culled twice from other areas on day 2.

"There's just a bunch on that one spot. Everything else is one here and one there."

He caught 12 to 15 keepers, the best of which was in the 5-pound class. He weighed a smallmouth that was nearly 4 pounds from a place he hadn't fished prior to today.

He figures he needs to keep catching 20-pound bags to stay in the hunt for his fifth career Elite win.

Kevin Short stayed red-hot with a bag that was just 2 ounces short of 20 pounds.

3rd: Short Keeps Rolling

> Day 2: 5, 19-14 (10, 39-04)

Short has now been among the Top 9 after 6 consecutive tournament days this month. Just as he did at the Delaware River, he's avoiding crowds entirely.

When the majority of the field heads north each morning from the launch, he goes in the opposite direction. He fishes all the way down to the southern end of the lake at Ithaca, N.Y. (a distance of about 20 miles) and then starts working his way back up.

"I'm not around anybody," he said. "I'm not catching them from one place, but I'm catching them from the same kind of stuff.

"I fished a bunch of new stuff today I hadn't been around and I caught a couple off it."

He boated 10 keepers, including a 4 1/2-pounder.

"I'm not changing anything. I just need to go catch them another day, and then catch them again another day after that."

4th: Evers not Content

> Day 2: 5, 19-05 (10, 39-01)

Evers said his current pace of 19 1/2 pounds a day likely won't be good enough to win.

"I'm probably going to need to get in the 20s to have a chance," he said. "I'm going to have to pick it up some more and land everything that bites."

A fish that was just shy of 5 pounds was the biggest of the 10 keepers he caught on day 2. He lost two fish that probably would've gone to the scale.

"I've had my stuff to myself, pretty much," he said. "It's been about the same both days."

48th: Tough Start for Kernan

> Day 2: 3, 7-12 (8, 28-03)

As badly as his day went, Kernan was just thankful to remain inside the 50-cut.

"I left my breakfast sandwich in the microwave and it just went downhill from there," he said with a laugh. "But that's five checks or me in my rookie year, so I'm elated.

"I saw a couple guys around me catch some today, so they were there. I just made some bad decisions."

His plan was to catch three keepers from a grass flat on a spinnerbait before going flipping, but he only got one.

"When you flip with the mentality that you only need two keepers, you fish differently. If you need five, it's not the same."

70th: VanDam Gambled (Again) and Lost

> Day 2: 5, 10-00 (10, 24-04)

The field for the 2015 Bassmaster Classic will not include Kevin VanDam unless a handful of anglers just ahead of him in the Angler of the Year chase crumble on Saturday. If that doesn't happen, his run of 24 straight Classics (second only to Rick Clunn's 28 straight) will come to an end.

"It's something I've never taken for granted," he said Friday. "This has just been an incredible rough streak for me, these last two tournaments. Today was just atrocious. You wouldn't wish it on anybody.

"Fortunately for me, I've had a lot more ups than downs. I'll look back at several events this season and hopefully be better in the future and learn from the things I did wrong."

He pointed to the St. Johns River and Lake Dardanelle, specifically, as tournaments where he maybe got too caught up in his memories of each venue rather than current conditions.

"Those are places I've done really well at in the past and I think I put too much emphasis on the past there and didn't fish smart," he added. "The key to being consistently in the hunt for Angler of the Year is to never have any of those stinker tournaments. Your bad ones need to be a 40th or 50th at the worst.

"I just didn't do that. It's crazy, but the older you get and the most experience you have it seems like the more hard-headed you can be at times about some things. I want to win so bad and it's so hard to at this level that taking those kind of chances is sometimes going to hurt you. It did at those two events. I expected to do really well at both of those events and gambled a bit and it bit me."

He felt another gamble was required if he was to make a significant move up the leaderboard today after weighing 14-04 on day 1 at Cayuga.

"I had a decent day yesterday and caught a ton of fish, but today I was really struggling and took a gamble and made a really long run south to what I thought would be a smart deal," he said. "I found the whole river system on this lake is blown out with mud from that rain yesterday and that just shocked me. It didn't pan out. I hadn't gotten a lot of bites, but I knew there was some quality in there and I knew that's what I needed to do well.

"I tried to overcome it, but even as bad a day as I had, I had my chances to have a pretty good day. When things are going your way, when you boat flip that 4-pounder, he comes off in the boat. When they're not going your way, he hits the side of the boat and comes off and goes back in the water. You can't let it get under your skin. The thing about this sport is you really need a short memory."

> Day 2 stats – 106 anglers, 97 limits (2 fewer than day 1), 5 fours, 2 threes, 1 one, 1 zero (one more than day 1).
