Casey Ashley's weight fell off by more than 5 1/2 pounds today at the Lake Hartwell FLW Tour, but he added about a half-pound to his lead. That's the type of day it was on the weather-beaten impoundment that sits on the South Carolina/Georgia border.

Ashley's 15-13 stringer left him with a 2-day total of 37-04. His weight today was more in line with what he'd anticipated for his daily average and he'd gladly take it again on day 3, which is expected to be a classic post-frontal situation under which the bite could remain stingy.

John Cox moved up one place to 2nd with a 15-11 bag that gave him a 34-08 total. He went the last 7 1/2 hours of day 2 without a bite, so he's certain he'll need to change things up for the weekend.

Clent Davis climbed from 7th to 3rd with a 17-00 sack that gave him a 33-14 aggregate. Barton Aiken, a resident of nearby Greenville, S.C., jumped from 9th to 4 as his 15-11 haul bumped his total to 31-11.

Andy Morgan, who's been atop the BassFan World Rankings since the conclusion of the Bassmaster Classic, brought in 2 ounces less than he had the previous day, but moved up from 16th to 5th in the standings. It's the 11th time he's made the day-2 cut to the Top 20 in the last 12 Tour events.

Here's a look at the Top 10 at the midway point (red numbers in parentheses represent deficit margin from the leader):

1. Casey Ashley: 37-04
2. John Cox: 34-08 (2-12)
3. Clent Davis: 33-14 (3-06)
4. Barton Aiken: 31-11 (5-09)
5. Andy Morgan: 29-12 (7-08)
6. Ramie Colson Jr.: 28-12 (8-08)
7. Ryan Davidson: 28-08 (8-12)
8. (tie) Charlie Ingram: 28-02 (9-02)
8. (tie) Randall Tharp: 28-02 (9-02)
10. Shad Schenck: 27-11 (9-09)

The air temperature was warmer today – it rocketed up about a dozen degrees into the mid 50s. Fishing conditions weren't any more pleasant than on day 1, though, as a chilly rain fell for more than half the day and a stiff wind (15 to 20 mph) blew throughout. Water temperatures were down as much as 8 degrees in some locales.

Catch rates fell off substantially from day 1 as just 80 of the 176 anglers managed to catch a limit (there were 121 five-fish bags the previous day). It took less than 25 pounds to secure a spot in the Top 20 and less than 20 pounds to garner a $10,000 check (that figure extends to 60th place).

The top bag of the day was the 19-09 brought in by Ryan Davidson, a rookie from West Virginia, which propelled him from 92nd place to 7th. Veteran Charlie Ingram made a big move (29 places to a tie for 8th) with a 16-06 stringer. Ingram is tied with reigning Forrest Wood Cup champion Randall Tharp, who gained 17 slots with a 14-14 sack.

The biggest back-sliders were Skip Johnson (2nd after day 1) and Jason Quinn (4th). Johnson sank to 42nd with a two-fish, 2-10 bag and Quinn dropped to 44th with a single 3-pound specimen.

The weather should improve big-time tomorrow – the forecast calls for mostly sunny skies with a high temperature of 70 degrees and a relatively light west/southwest wind to 10 mph. The prevailing opinion is that it may take the fish a day to adjust to the milder conditions and they won't start seriously chomping again until Sunday.

Only the Top 10 anglers will advance to the final day, when the winner will be determined based on highest 4-day weight.

Ashley Satisfied

> Day 2: 5, 15-13 (10, 37-04)

Ashley had no expectations of replicating his day-1 weight and was entirely content with what he brought to the scale.

"Fifteen pounds is a solid day here," he said. "With the weather as bad as it's been and all these (competitors) around, that's pretty decent. If you would've told me I could have that every day before the tournament started, I'd sit on the bank and never leave."

His bag had a different look on day 2 as four of its inhabitants were spotted bass (he'd weighed five largemouths the previous day). He handled about a dozen keepers, the biggest of which was a 4-pound largemouth.

"I did the same thing, but I went to some different areas. I've still got stuff I haven't fished because of the wind, so I hope I can keep it going.

"If I could get 13 or 14 pounds tomorrow, that'd allow me to hold my own and then I could go for the big bites the next day.

He doesn't think the emergence of the sun will have a major impact on his program, which he described the previous day as shallow-cranking in extremely clear water.

"I'll go out and do the same thing tomorrow and if the wind quits, I can fish more of my stuff. I'm just going to have at it and enjoy the warmer weather.

"I had one bite this morning on a bait I hadn't had any on yet, but I'm going to keep throwing it because they do bite it. I stuck it for just a second and it didn't get it good. Normally when you get a bite on that, it's a good one."

John Cox loaded up early, but then went biteless for the remainder of the day.

2nd: Cox Caught 'em Quickly

> Day 2: 5, 15-11 (10, 34-08)

Cox had a limit by 9:30 and never set a hook the rest of the day.

"The fish were definitely doing something," he said. "I don't know if they'd started to make a big move or what. We'll have to see what happens tomorrow. I'll just get in there in the morning and try to figure it out."

He caught 15 keepers during his morning flurry, including one that topped 4 pounds. He doesn't believe any of the ones he lost would've aided his cause."

If his junk-fishing program peters out, he doesn't know what his next move will be.

"I've got a spot where I think I can catch maybe 10 pounds. I'm thinking about doing that first and then going back to what I've been doing. The water cooled off after all that rain and I'm thinking that might be pushing the fish a little farther out than they were.

"If I can get 15 to 16 pounds tomorrow, that would be strong. I don't know if they'll bite real good tomorrow, but I think on Sunday 20 pounds will be doable."

3rd: Davis will Welcome Sun

> Day 2: 5, 17-00 (10, 33-14)

Davis thinks his bite will improve if the sun pops out on day 3.

"I've done the same thing both days and I didn't think I could catch them unless the sun was out, so I feel fortunate," he said. "I'm catching them from fairly deep, clear water. I definitely should get way more bites (under sunny skies)."

He went through eight or nine keepers and his bag was headed up by a 5-pound largemouth (he had two green fish and three spots). He hasn't lost a single fish through 2 days.

He's locked into his program and isn't considering any sort of backup plan.

"I'm going to continue to do what I've been doing and I won't change anything the next 2 days. I honestly believe tomorrow could be really good."

4th: Morgan's Roll Continues

> Day 2: 5, 14-13 (10, 29-12)

Morgan's sack was nearly identical to the one he caught on day 1. Surprisingly, a single brush pile is the lone place he's visited on both days.

"I fished a totally different area today," he said. "I fished a little bit deeper. I had a limit by 9 o'clock and I decided to roll the dice a little and look at some other water. It didn't help me that much – I think I culled three times, but they were all very slight upgrades.

None of the eight keepers he boated weighed more than 3 1/4 pounds.

"The biggest fish I had on all day, I lost. I got it right up to the surface and then the bait came out of its mouth like it was never hooked.

"I'll probably change some things tomorrow – look around a little shallower maybe. I haven't made up my mind about what I'm going to do or where I'm going to do it. I like to fish like that and this is a great lake for doing it because it's got a lot of different creeks and a lot of different water colors and things like that."

He's caught fish on numerous baits to this point.

"I haven't caught many on anything, but I've caught one on just about everything."

42nd: Johnson's Fish Gone

> Day 2: 2, 2-10 (7, 21-14)

The ditch on a flat that was so good to Johnson on day 1 was barren on day 2.

"The rain that fell hard all night came down that feeder creek and the cold, muddy water pushed all those fish out," he said. "I couldn't put anything else together."

He threw a Strike King Redeye Shad en route to compiling his 19-04 opening-day stringer. On day 2 he resorted to fishing laydowns in 4 to 8 feet of water with a Texas-rigged Nemesis Bullet Craw.

"I only had the two bites," he said. "I didn't lose anything."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 176 anglers, 80 limits (41 fewer than day 1), 17 fours, 27 threes, 25 twos, 18 ones, 9 zeroes (five more than day 1).

> Jay Yelas averaged just under 10 pounds a day and ended up in 55th place. He caught plenty of fish, but quality was in short supply. To read his tournament recap, click here to visit BassFan's Pro View Reports.
