Jason Christie has proven twice this year that he can pull off a rally to secure a victory. This week, it appears he's trying to make it a little easier on himself.

Facing a much different set of conditions today than on day 1, Christie didn't flinch. The Park Hill, Okla., resident sacked 18-14 to push his 2-day total to 40-10, extending his lead from 7 ounces to more than 2 1/2 pounds at the halfway mark of the Grand Lake FLW Tour.

The water pouring through the Pensacola Dam slowed to a trickle today and it certainly changed how some fish were positioning. It also led to some shuffling on the leaderboard behind Christie, who locked up his sixth Top-20 finish of the year across both tours.

"My goal tomorrow is obviously to catch all I can, but I want to give myself a legitimate chance to win on Sunday," Christie said. "I could go out and catch 6 pounds tomorrow, but whether I'm leading or down by 2 or 3 pounds, I just want to have a chance to win Sunday. With what they're doing with the water, I can go for it then. I can fish stuff, places you would call a gamble, where you might not get a bite, but if you get one, it could be a big one. I have to make it to Sunday in order to do that."

Having mounted a 10th-to-1st rally at the Beaver Lake FLW Tour followed by an 11th-to-1st comeback at the Bull Shoals Elite Series earlier this season, he's ready for just about anything the weekend has in store.

"I'm pretty calm right now," he said. "It's important to me, but I'm not losing any sleep over it. It's just another tournament. With everything that's happening now and with the way the lake is, it put a lot of fish shallow and pretty much all of my (local) advantage was taken away. I'm fishing the same stuff I'd fish even if I didn't live here."

Robbie Dodson, a stalwart on the Ozark lakes in Missouri and Arkansas, jumped six spots to 2nd today behind an 18-05 stringer, giving him 37-14. Zell Rowland also advanced six places to land in 3rd with 36-06 after catching 16-14 today.

Todd Auten slipped a spot to 4th with 36-00 while Jimmy Houston dropped to 5th from 2nd with 35-08 following a 14-01 limit.

Here's a look at the Top 10 at the halfway point, with deficit margin from Christie indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Jason Christie: 40-10
2. Robbie Dodson: 37-14 (2-12)
3. Zell Rowland: 36-06 (4-04)
4. Todd Auten: 36-00 (4-10)
5. Jimmy Houston: 35-08 (5-02)
6. Bryan Thrift: 35-08 (5-02)
7. Barry Wilson: 35-08 (5-02)
8. Matt Stefan: 35-01 (5-09)
9. Andy Morgan: 35-01 (5-09)
10. James Biggs: 35-00 (5-10)

Eight ounces separate Houston from James Biggs in 10th and there's a gap of less than 6 1/2 pounds between Lendell Martin Jr. in 20th and Christie as Grand continued to impress with its bounty of 3- to 5-pound fish. The limit count was down a little today, as were the top-end weights – just one 20-pound stringer showed up courtesy of Tommy Martin (12th).

Among those falling out of contention and missing the cut following strong efforts on day 1 was Randy Blaukat, who tumbled to 39th from 4th after catching 10-03 today. Adrian Avena had his Angler of the Year (AOY) hopes dashed as he caught just 8-15 and plummeted from 6th to 61st, the first spot out of the money.

The skies were clear and the lake was slick calm at blast-off today, but some clouds rolled in and the wind started to pick up toward the afternoon, although it didn't seem to activate any more (bigger) fish. Tomorrow's forecast is calling for sunny skies again with temperatures in the mid 80s and a south breeze of 5 to 15 mph.

Regardless of the outcome this weekend, there will be a new leader atop the AOY standings when the Tour shifts to Lake Chickamauga for the season finale later this month. Andy Morgan (9th, 35-01) and Bryan Thrift (6th, 35-08) came to Grand 2nd and 4th, respectively, in points, but will leave 1-2 with the order dependent on where each finishes.

Morgan is seeking his first career AOY title while Thrift is stalking his second crown. Brent Ehrler, the points leader since his win at Smith Lake, finished 47th today and will drop to 4th when the points are officially updated Sunday.

The field was trimmed to the Top 20 today and the Top 10 after Saturday will advance to Sunday's final round, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Christie Settling In

> Day 2: 5, 18-14 (10, 40-10)

Christie says one of the things that got in his head during the Bassmaster Classic at Grand earlier this year was his desire to fish history and run to the spots where he'd caught them before at that time of year. He's making a concerted effort to not do that again this week.

"I've been proud of myself," he said. "With all of the places I have to fish on this lake, I've stayed put mostly and have been digging out an area. I'm not running around all crazy. It's hard to do, but the areas I'm fishing I've fished them for a lot of years and in my mind, they have the best capability of putting out 20 pounds with the way the conditions are. You can catch 20 pounds anywhere on this lake, but I feel the area I'm fishing, if I'm going to catch 20, that's where it’ll be from."

Robbie Dodson didn't catch near the numbers he did on day 1, but the quality was what he needed to move into 2nd.

He says he's not expecting the 20-pounds-a-day pace to hold up through the week and thinks the eventual winner will average out around 18 to 18 1/2 pounds. His key flipping bait so far has been a YUM Wooly Bug, but after that he's been mixing it up as he moves around.

"I pretty much made a lot of the same decisions as yesterday," he said. "When they shut the water off, I could almost immediately. The fish scattered and it was hard to pinpoint where they were going to be. Today was a tougher day for me. I had a chance to have about what I had yesterday, but I lost a couple good ones. It seemed like the better fish bit on day 1. Today, I caught a lot of 2 to 2 1/2-pounders. I think some of that has to do with the lake getting a lot of pressure and a lot of us are looking for the same thing."

He endured a slow morning after swinging a 4-pounder in the boat right away.

"I thought, 'Here we go,'" he said, "but it was slower and steady, nothing exciting. It took me all day to catch what I caught. I left one area with 14 pounds, then ran around and upgraded a couple of times.

"I felt like with the water shutting off, the place I caught them yesterday wouldn't be very good so I didn't go to it. It's one of those places you don't fish unless they're running water."

2nd: Dodson Concerned

> Day 2: 5, 18-05 (10, 37-14)

Dodson's catch rate dropped off significantly today, but he was fortunate to have four "good ones," he said. Still, he's a bit concerned about what tomorrow will bring.

"I must've caught 30 keepers yesterday," he said. "Today I got six bites. I caught them running shallow stuff, but the lake's not how I like it. My bite went to nothing today.

"I'd say my decision-making was pretty good. I got the right bites, but I'm real spooked about tomorrow. I could catch 8 about as easily as I could catch 18."

He's been flipping a Luck E Strike jig with no rhyme or reason to what he's targeting.

"I've seen a lot of the guys near the top sharing the same water and all the aggressive ones are getting caught," he said. "It's tough because you can't leave a place where they're biting and expect it won't get hit when you're gone.

"I'm going to do the same thing tomorrow. If I can get lucky and get five bites doing what I'm doing, maybe I can move up more. I'm not going to switch up."

3rd: Rowland Mixing Shallow and Deep

> Day 2: 5, 16-14 (10, 36-06)

Rowland sorted through 30 keepers today as he climbed into the Top 3.

While he's predominantly flipping, he's also caught some fish on a topwater and a Carolina rig. He says if he qualifies for Sunday, he'll likely shift to a crankbait and Carolina rig program.

"Most guys are trying to flip shallow and fish right up to the bank," he said. "The fish are off the bank and most of them are going over them with their trolling motors. Some of those fish that were real shallow got affected today with the dropping water.

"They pulled the water down last night about 8 inches and pulled some of the fish out. I had a lot of company in one of my better areas so I just made one pass through it and caught a limit, then left. I went and practiced and found some new water."

He anticipates the lake will rise a couple inches overnight as it stabilizes and he said that could improve the flipping bite.

Todd Auten slipped a spot in the standings, but still is just 4-10 back of Christie.

"This place is a phenomenal fishery," he added. "I don’t know how you rank lakes, but I rank a lake as being excellent, good or poor. This is an excellent fishery. There aren't too many lake in this country that have an overabundance of 3- to 4-pounders like this one does. If you're not catching 4-pounders here, don’t come to weigh-in."

4th: Fewer Bites For Auten

> Day 2: 5, 15-04 (10, 36-00)

When Auten looked at this year's schedule, his first thought was that the final half of the schedule would suit his strengths more so than the first three derbies. The results have certainly backed up his hunch.

After three straight results in the 120s or worse, he logged a 30th-place finish at Lake Eufaula and this week, he's in position to score his first Top-10 finish since Lake Hartwell in early 2012.

"With two more days, a lot could happen," he said. "I just want to make it to the next day. It means the world to be where I'm at. I don't know if the schedule got in my head, but I just did terrible to start (the year)."

He got considerably fewer bites today, "and when they did bite, they bit short," he noted. "It was a lot tougher day overall. It clouded up after a little while and we got some wind and I thought they'd start biting, but they never did. I had to hunt and peck for the ones I caught."

He's been fishing in the bushes and around some rock and has one stretch with some willows on it. Today he ran down to an area he didn't wind up fishing on day 1.

"I thought it might pan out today, but there was another boat on it when I got there," he said. "I don't think they guy running it made the cut, but I think he had about 16 pounds so I don't know if that spot's shot or not."

5th: No Big Ones for Houston

> Day 2: 5, 14-01 (10, 35-08)

Houston's stringer today was the lightest among those who made the Top 20. He said it wasn't for a lack of fish caught, though. He simply just couldn’t connect with any specimen over 3 to 3 1/4 pounds.

"It was pretty amazing," he said. "I was in the same places where I caught all of those big ones yesterday, too. There were some other good stringers caught from there today so I guess those guys – Travis Fox, Wesley Strader and Rusty Trancygier – were doing something different than me to catch the bigger ones. The bigger fish just didn't bite as good as yesterday, for me anyway."

Despite his struggles to catch 4-plus pounders today, he's still just 5 pounds back of Christie.

"I'm tickled to be up there still," he said. "I didn't think I'd be in the cut when I came in. It's pretty comforting when you know the worst you can do is 20th. I've fished a lot of tournaments in my career where winning didn't pay $13,000."

He caught his two biggest fish today on a buzzbait and had the most success with a bladed jig. He also flipped some trees and threw a spinnerbait.

"I didn't throw a crankbait at all today," he said. "Maybe I threw too big of a spinnerbait today, I'm not sure. I'll maybe go to a smaller bait tomorrow. I really believe the area I'm fishing the fish move up there all day, but without much wind, there's not much bait in there."

7th: Wilson Whacked 'Em Early

> Day 2: 5, 17-01 (10, 35-08)

Barry Wilson rode a pattern he discovered late on day 1 to an early limit today, then upgraded with his flipping stick before coming back to his morning hot spot.

"In five casts, I culled three times and they were all 3-pounders," he said.

His morning deal was a crankbait pattern that netted him two largemouths and three spotted bass from an area he says continues to replenish with fish. After another rotation of flipping, he checked it again in the afternoon, but didn't have the success he did earlier.

"Yesterday, I had a couple big fish on that pulled off there," he said. "I don't know where they are, but I hope they're still in that area tomorrow."

He said the morning bite's been good until 10:30 or so and then the action picks up again around 1 p.m.

Barry Wilson caught an early limit today and was able to upgrade flipping and with a crankbait.

"The bait fish seem to get more active in the afternoon," he said.

With the water starting to stabilize, he believes it'll help the flippers.

"It could go up 3 inches overnight from what I've heard," he said. "I'd say it's still 1 to 2 feet above full pool and that seems to help the shallow fish that stay in the bushes. They're still there, but they got a lot of pressure today as guys started to scramble."

13th: Yelas Missed a Few

> Day 2: 5, 15-15 (10, 34-09)

Jay Yelas has bounced back nicely this week after a finish in the 100s at Lake Eufaula. Today was a bit more difficult, he said, with the slick morning conditions.

"That made the bite a little tougher," he said. "With the clouds and wind we had all day yesterday, they were so aggressive. You'd flip in a bush and the whole bush would shake violently."

He said he's lost the five best fish he's hooked so far and his presence in the Top 20 is a testament to how good the lake is fishing.

"I'm really disappointed with my own performance," he said. "You can't beat these guys when that happens. I can't remember that happening to me before. You have to execute on at least half of those. I almost sat down and started crying in my boat. I don't think I've ever had a string of bad luck like that. The good thing, though, is I'm getting the bites."

He boated 12 keepers today, well off the pace he set on day 1. His main strategy has been to flip flooded shoreline cover in one particular creek.

"The stuff is so gnarly and everyone I've talked to has lost some fish," he said. "That first flip is so important and you have to think about the best way to get to the fish out before you flip. It's the game within the game. I'd love to have a 100-percent day on my big bites."

61st: Painful Day for Avena

> Day 2: 5, 8-15 (10, 28-10)

Whatever could go wrong did go wrong for Avena today as the second-year New Jersey pro slipped out of the money and out of contention for AOY. He took a swimbait hook to the hand while trying to wrestle an umbrella rig free from a dock cable. Later, he took a treble hook to a finger after attempting to free a fish that was hung up near the boat.

"I had the bites to do well," he said. "I didn't have the bites I had yesterday, but I had the bites to do alright. I made the right decisions. It's just that my execution sucked. I lost a 4 and two 3s. That right there would've given me 14 or 15 pounds. That's one thing about this sport, it's humbling. Going from 6th to not getting a check really hurts."

He fished mostly new stuff today with the water starting to stabilize and got back on a pattern that worked in practice throwing an umbrella rig around docks to catch suspended fish.

"I caught about 15 today doing that, but didn't catch a big one," he said. "Today was one of those days."
