Cotten Cracks 30, Opens 7-Pound Lead at Big “O”

It’s been said a thousand times before that in order to contend for a tournament win at Lake Okeechobee, big fish are a must. There’s just no way around it. If you’re not catching 5-plus pounders consistently, they’re going to hand the trophy to someone else.

Rick Cotten knows his way around big fish, being from Guntersville, Ala., and he’s following the Okeechobee formula to a tee this week. Coming off a 24-pound effort on day 1, he hauled in the biggest bag of the tournament so far on day 2 – a 30-03 stringer that catapulted him from 3rd place to the lead. He’ll carry a 7-pound cushion into the weekend.

Tour rookies Drew Benton and day-1 leader Casey Martin are his closest pursuers in 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Benton had another 23-plus pound day and jumped a position with 47-00 while Martin’s weight fell off by more than 8 pounds, but his 18-09 kept him in contention.

It’s another 7 pounds back to 4th, where Chad Grigsby sits after more than doubling his day-1 weight with a 25-11 stringer that gave him 38-05. From there, it’s a tightly-packed leaderboard as less than 8 pounds separates 5th place from 20th. Scott Canterbury and Jacob Wheeler wound up tied for 20th, but Canterbury will fish the weekend as he had the best single-day weight between the two – a 21-05 effort today.

Canterbury was the biggest mover of the day, leaping 77 spots into the cut after catching just 9-10 on day 1. Last year’s Okeechobee FLW Tour Open winner Randall Tharp (81st to 13th) made a huge surge today, despite a mechanical failure up north. Brandon McMillan brought him back in, sacrificing a good bit of his day in the process.

Rich Dalbey slipped from 4th to 19th, but made the Top-20 cut in his first Tour event. Jacob Powroznik, the runner-up in last year’s Angler of the Year race, slipped from 6th to 24th after catching just 10-00 to finish with 30-07. David Dudley, the reigning AOY and top-ranked pro in the BassFan Rankings, finished 65th.

Heavy cloud cover hung around the lake for much of the morning, making it tougher on those targeting bedding fish. The warmer temperatures and new moon that’s set to arrive on Sunday may help those who are in areas where the fish heading.

Winds out of the north are expected to pick up this weekend, which is typically among the worst possible scenarios on the lake for fishing. It’ll definitely alter some anglers’ strategies as far as where to start and how much they move around.

The Top 10 pros after tomorrow will advance to Sunday’s final round, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Cotten In Unfamiliar Position

> Day 2: 5, 30-03 (10, 54-03)

This is the fifth FLW Tour event for Cotton, who finished 12th last year at the Kentucky Lake Tour Major. He’s never won an FLW event – the closest he came was a 3rd-place finish at the Lake Guntersville EverStart last year.

“There’s a lot of work left to do,” he said. “I’ve never led a tournament this big before.”

He didn’t catch near the number of fish he did on day 1, but made the most of the ones he got today.

“I was just lucky and stuck the right five bites,” he said. “I went to the area that I was fishing yesterday and I couldn’t catch them. I was only able to catch one 2-pounder. Then I went to a spot where I didn’t catch them at all yesterday and I caught all of my big ones right there.”

He caught his two biggest fish on consecutive casts this morning, then endured a lull until 1 p.m., when he put his last fish in the livewell.

“I’m committed to one technique,” he said. “I’m just switching between a few different trailers. When they quit hitting one, I’ll pick up the other.

“I wasn’t even sure that I was going to catch them today. I’m hoping that they will stay there and I can catch them again tomorrow. The key is going to be making the right move at the right time, like I did today. I believe it is possible to break 100 pounds here, and I hope I do.”

2nd: Benton Confident

> Day 2: 5, 23-09 (10, 47-00)

Benton is sensing the looming new moon has a bunch of fresh spawners heading toward him and that’s why he’s quite confident he can continue at the 23-pound pace he’s set for himself.

“I’m feeling pretty good about it,” he said. “The way I’m fishing, I have two options – sight-fishing and some just fishing. I left two on beds for tomorrow and I’m pretty sure I can them again just fishing.”

He put 17 pounds in the boat sight-fishing in the morning today and then made a move and was able to cull three times in about 10 minutes. He quit fishing around noon and spent the afternoon looking for new beds.

He’s going to keep a close eye on the wind tomorrow, though, because it could impact where he fishes and when. He thinks he’s in the right zone to intercept the fish as they come in off the main lake.

“I feel like they’re coming to me,” he said. “Every fish I caught fishing was all white. You could tell they’d been offshore.”

He didn’t lose any key fish today, but he spooked a good-sized female that never seemed interested in biting once she swung back around the bed. He’s not concerned much with the deficit he faces to catch Cotten at the halfway point.

“I feel like I’m going to catch them again,” he said. “It’s just a matter of putting the ball back in his court.”

3rd: Martin Goofed

> Day 2: 5, 18-09 (10, 45-05)

Martin found it hard to gripe about his position heading into the weekend of his first Tour-level event as a pro. Despite relinquishing the lead, he’s aware the potential exists to be back on top after tomorrow.

“I’m in the Top 5 going into the weekend so I can’t complain about that,” he said. “I dug myself a little bit of a hole today. (Rick) had a real big bag, but you know how it is. On this lake, it’s going to come down to who catches big bags the next 2 days in a row.”

The overcast morning seemed to throw him a curveball as he gave up on some areas earlier than he would’ve liked.

“I’m going to stick with them tomorrow,” he said. “I know they’re there and I know they live there so I’m going to go with what I can get tomorrow. I ran around a little too early today before I had a better sack.

“I have a few different areas that I’m focusing on. It’s one of those deals where a couple of the areas are out of the wind and protected. I don’t think the wind’s going to be a huge factor.”

4th: Grigsby Rallies

> Day 2: 5, 25-11 (10, 38-05)

On day 1, Grigsby had the bites to be way up the leaderboard. However, he lost a handful of fish that had him down in the 50s entering today.

“I fished a little different area (today),” he said. “I just didn’t miss them. Yesterday, I just lost them. They were biting funny or something. They just fell off.”

Even when things went wrong today, he made up for it. Case in point, he broke off a 4-pounder this morning while flipping isolated reeds and caught the same fish 10 minutes later off a bed.

“That’s the only thing that went wrong and it went right in the end,” he added.

When the wind picked up later in the morning today, he moved out of his flipping area and started throwing a spinnerbait. Almost immediately, he boated a 6 1/2-pounder, which went well with the three 4-pounders he already had. Later in the day, he moved to a hyacinth mat he’d found in practice. Within five flips, he caught a 7-pounder to round out his day.

5th: Hendricks Caught A Giant, Lost Another

> Day 2: 5, 24-06 (10, 38-04)

Last year, Wade Hendricks made one Top-20 cut as a rookie on Tour. If tomorrow goes as well as today, he might be looking at his first Top-10 finish.

He came into the day in 35th place, but a massive 24-06 stringer rocketed him into the Top 5, a couple big bites from the lead. He had one of those giants on today early in the morning, but it jumped off. He recovered nicely with a big one that weighed 8-14 and rotated through several techniques, including some topwater, moving baits and flipping.

“I’m optimistic for tomorrow,” the Tennessean said. “There’s quite a few big fish in the area I’m fishing and I was only sharing it with one other boat and I don’t think he made the cut, so there should be some good opportunities there tomorrow.

“It was something I located in practice. I used it as my second area on day 1 after my first location didn’t pan out. About noon yesterday, I was able to get in there and at least get a level start. Today, obviously, it seemed like some big girls moved in there.”

The shift in wind today forced him to go flipping in the afternoon and he eventually migrated to another area where he culled a couple more times. Much more wind tomorrow could hamper his efforts to get any big fish to bite in one of his spots.

“I’m going to just try to bear down and grind through it and keep my bait around those big fish,” he added. “Otherwise, I do have an area if it’s just not doable that I could possibly sustain enough of a limit to make it to day 4.”

6th: Neal Has ‘Em Cornered

> Day 2: 5, 22-12 (10, 38-03)

Michael Neal improved upon his day-1 weight by more than 7 pounds and that was due in large part to the 9-pounder that anchored his bag today. He said it made up for another brute he lost yesterday.

He struggled through practice to catch the quality Okeechobee is known for and seems to have lucked into a few spots where fish are transitioning in and out of.

“I’m feeling pretty good about it,” he said. “I had no clue what I had stumbled upon, but I think it’s an area that both pre-spawn and post-spawn fish coming to. The big fish yesterday didn’t have any eggs in them and the big ones today did. I feel very confident that I can back up what I had today, especially when I quit fishing them at 9 o’clock.”

He’s not having to run around like some of his competitors are. He’s focused on a 1-mile stretch up north. He’s caught his fish on a swimbait and a swimjig.

“The water’s warmed up 3 or 4 degrees since we’ve been here and I think it’s triggered another wave of fish to pull up,” he said. “I’m fishing real close to 5 feet of water at the same speed. It’s a deal where I’m getting the fish that are coming and leaving. I’m not flipping either. Everybody else, at some point is, and I don’t even have a rod on the deck with a flipping bait on it.”

The area he’s targeting is mostly protected from any wind, he said, so he’s planning to hunker down and pick it apart to see if he can score his first Top-10 finish on Tour.

“I pretty much have them pinpointed so tomorrow I’m just going to sit there and hammer them and see what happens,” he said. “If I make it to Sunday, we’ll see if there are any left. Otherwise, we’ll just scramble around.”

7th: Avena Is Looking

> Day 2: 5, 16-09 (10, 37-11)

Adrian Avena doesn’t have as much experience at Lake Okeechobee as some of the competitors around him in the standings, but he’s acquitted himself nicely through 2 days. He’s done his best work looking so far and feels confident he can maintain the pace he’s on by focusing on spawners.

“That little bedding area I have is something that will settle you down,” he said. “You can go in there whether you’re going to spend an hour or maybe 2 hours, but you can definitely catch a limit pretty quick and then you can go out and flip.”

Today, he caught about 13 pounds early before leaving to target some flipping fish. He wound up catching a 3 1/2-pounder and a 5 to upgrade his sack.

“I’d been more sight-fishing and casting to beds I could see,” he added. “It was cloudy for the most part today so it was tough to see them right off the bat. I think it’s going to be sunny again tomorrow so I’ll probably end up flipping a lot more. I’m going to try to catch a big sack tomorrow.”

10th: Erhler Solves Florida – Finally

> Day 2: 5, 16-10 (10, 36-01)

After several tries, Brent Ehrler thinks he may have shaken his Florida funk once and for all. In six previous Tour events in the Sunshine State, the Californian had cashed just one check and that was during his rookie season in 2005 when he finished 52nd at Lake Toho.

He’s well on his way to eclipsing that result this week after he brought in 16-10 today to make the weekend in 10th.

“I finally deciphered what was going on and I didn’t think it was good until I went back and started catching them,” he said. “Fishing was difficult in practice and basically, you’d go into areas where you got bites and I happened to go into areas where there were some big ones.”

He lost a giant estimated to be close to 10 pounds today. Had he gotten it into the boat, he could’ve culled a 1 1/2-pounder.

“I had it on and got it to the boat, but it pulled again and actually straightened out my hook,” he said. “These fish are so big and so strong. I think it was one of those pre-spawn females. They’re so strong and you can’t play them out. You have to get them into the boat. I probably horsed it too much.”

The area he was fishing up north saw a bit more pressure today, which made it harder to fish and with the wind expected to pick up tomorrow, he may rethink where he starts his day.

“Any time the wind blows here, it makes it more difficult,” he said. “It’s not going to help. It’s only going to hurt. I have a couple of spots where it’ll definitely affect it so maybe I’ll fish them hard early on.”

152nd: Auten Missed a Bunch

> Day 2: 5, 6-05 (10, 15-11)

A week after finishing 8th at the Kissimmee Chain Bassmaster Southern Open, Todd Auten felt like he had some momentum going heading to Okeechobee, where he’d finished 16th a year ago.

It all came to a screeching halt today as he lost count of how many fish he had get off. This is his worst Tour result since finishing 182nd at Beaver Lake in 2006.

“I had probably six or seven fish on and every one of them came off today,” he said. “A couple of them were pretty good fish and would’ve made a difference. I just didn’t execute.”

Like many others, he mixed up his presentations between a ChatterBait, a Zoom Speed Worm and some flipping.

“It was as if they had lock-jaw on me today,” he added. “I couldn’t do anything right.”

> Day 2 stats – 174 anglers, 165 limits (8 more than yesterday), 5 fours, 1 three, 1 one, 2 zeroes (1 more than yesterday).

> Brandon Rummel has been sick all week with the flu. He fished both days, but couldn’t muster any keeper bites.

> Austin Terry, who was fishing his first Tour event after winning the Lake Amistad Texas EverStart, said his boat broke down today in an area he had to himself and missed check-in. He took a zero after catching 11-12 on day 1. He finished 171st.
