Casey Martin is no stranger to the top of the leaderboard. Over the past 3 years, he has a series of Top-10 finishes from assorted FLW events, including three Tour wins out of the back of the boat. Today, however, he found himself on the front deck calling the shots for the first time at the sports’s top level of competition.

It didn’t seem to faze the New Market, Ala., native at all, as he weighed a 26-12 limit to kick off his pro career in style by taking the lead at the season-opening Lake Okeechobee FLW Tour.

“It was one of those days where everything went right,” he said. “I’m just a little worried that everything won’t go right tomorrow. It’s hard to get days here where things go right like that back-to-back.”

It’s a 2-12 gap to 2nd place, occupied by fellow Alabamian Rick Cotten with 24-00. Drew Benton, another Tour rookie, is the top Floridian in 3rd with 23-07 while Rich Dalbey, also fishing his first Tour event from the front deck, is 4th with 21-14.

Only seven 20-pound stringers came across the stage on the pro side, which is telling of how finicky the big fish have been. Day 1 of last year’s Tour Open featured 16 bags of more than 20 pounds, including a pair of 33-pound sacks.

Some of the usual Okeechobee stalwarts – Randall Tharp (81st), Scott Martin (93rd), David Dudley (97th), J.T. Kenney (113th), Mike Surman (140th) – are well down the leaderboard and have some work to do tomorrow if they hope to fish the weekend.

Here's a look at the Top 10 entering the second day of competition, with deficit margin from Martin indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Casey Martin: 26-12
2. Rick Cotten: 24-00 (2-12)
3. Drew Benton: 23-07 (3-05)
4. Rich Dalbey: 21-14 (4-14)
5. Adrian Avena: 21-02 (5-10)
6. Jacob Powroznik: 20-07 (6-05)
7. Dion Hibdon: 20-02 (6-10)
8. Brent Ehrler: 19-07 (7-05)
9. Shad Schenck: 18-08 (8-04)
10. John Cox: 18-00 (8-12)

The consensus was that the bite had improved slightly since practice wrapped up on Tuesday and that’s due in part to warmer temperatures settling in. The wind was manageable in most areas today, allowing pros to start along the south end and make a run to the north side if time allowed. Most of the leaders' bags were anchored by one mammoth bite and several big hens were plucked off beds.

A combo program of flipping and moving baits seemed be the ticket for some of the leaders, but if the warming trend continues, it’s possible another wave of females could move in to spawn and that could make it tough to leave the flipping stick on the deck for too long.

The field will be reduced to the Top 20 after tomorrow’s weigh-in and the Top 10 after Saturday will advance to the final round on Sunday, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Martin Did His Homework

> Day 1: 5, 26-12

Martin has gotten to know the Big “O” quite well over the past 8 weeks. He fished the BFL and EverStart Series events there last month and pulled down a 6th-place finish in the EverStart. He thinks spending as much time as possible at the lake gave him a leg up on some of his competitors this week.

“One advantage I had was I’ve been down here since after Christmas, so I’ve gotten to see the fish under different conditions,” he said. “I think a lot of guys that just showed up for official practice kind of struggled just because those fish weren’t biting earlier this week, so it was hard to find anything.

“I’ve seen the guys that do well down here and I know what they do – they spend time down here and put their hard work in. That seems to be the best way to have shot at putting yourself in position to win.”

He burned through nearly two full tanks of gas today, employing a run-and-gun approach in the early morning as he hoped to pick off a limit in certain areas before the crowds started to form.

“I tried to hit as many good spots that I knew of as fast as I could this morning because I knew a lot of the stuff was going to get hit pretty hard,” he said. “I think some guys just hunker down in an area and just fish, where I just ran to the best spots in certain areas. I think that’s what made the biggest difference.”

He had a trio of fish in the 6-pound class along with a 4 and a 3 1/2, and four of them came from different areas on multiple baits. He caught some flipping, some on a swimjig and others on a ChatterBait. Through it all, he kept his cool and is anxious to get back out there tomorrow.

Drew Benton tried to key on bedding fish today.

“I was surprisingly relaxed,” Marin said. “It was one of those deals that I’ve fished in a number of tournaments the last couple years. I thought I’d be more in awe, but I think fishing 2 years as a co-angler you see these guys and you know how great they are. But I’ve seen them multiple times so it was just easier to treat it like another tournament where I think if somebody who came out of local stuff might’ve been in awe on their first day fishing the Tour.”

2nd: Cotten Was Confident Coming In

> Day 1: 5, 24-00

Even though his practice was tough, like many others in the field, Cotten still felt like he could crack 20 pounds on day 1. He did that and then some.

After a slow start to his morning up the lake, he made a move only to find it occupied by another boat. He was about to hit the panic button as he settled on a spot that hadn’t produced much in practice.

“I just wound up in a spot that I really didn’t have any intention of going to because all I caught there in practice was 2-pounders,” he said. “Then good things started to happen until the wind picked up. When the wind picked up, the big bite shut down. The water never dirtied up. We were in a pretty good spot. For some reason, the big ones just quit hitting. I caught quite a few 2-pounders after that.”

He sorted through about a dozen keepers and had a 7-04 kicker to help his effort.

“I thought I would have over 20, but I wasn’t sure,” he said. “I felt like I could have 20 pounds and I’m hoping I can catch that each day. We’ll see. You know how fishing goes.”

3rd: Beds Were Benton’s Focus

> Day 1: 5, 23-07

Benton is in comfort zone at this time of year at Okeechobee. He enjoys targeting spawning females, but hasn’t been able to get into much of a rhythm looking at them this week.

Still, he was able to string together three 5-pounders and a pair of 4s to get himself near the top of the leaderboard.

“When I came down here I was really expecting to sight-fish a whole lot more than I have,” he said. “That’s really my strong suit down here. Every time I come down here, I feel like I can compete when I can I catch them off the beds, but this year there hasn’t been that many move up.”

He pulled just one off a crib today and had to cover plenty of real estate to catch what he did. One of his keepers came on a spinnerbait and another fell for a swimjig.

“I don’t know what the deal is, but it worked out today,” he said. “I still feel like I can catch a couple good ones. There are two on beds that I know of that I can probably still catch. After that, I’m going to have to go fishing again. I still feel like there are big ones swimming around the areas I’m fishing.”

4th: Dalbey Had Strong Morning

> Day 1: 5, 21-14

Dalbey fished the Okeechobee EverStart last month and then stuck around for about a week to get a better feel for what would be his first Tour-level event as a pro. It seems like the extra work paid off.

“I just went around and tried to find some areas where I could get bit,” he said.

He had a tough practice earlier this week, but got it going this morning with some moving baits around the south side.

“The wind wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be,” he said. “That’s one of the reasons I figured I could start on the South end. I knew it would be somewhat protected. The area I started in, with the south wind, it’d put a little ripple on the water and that seemed like it was the key for those moving baits.”

He had close to 10 pounds before he picked up his flipping stick.

“I had an area in there where I shook off a jig fish on Monday and I never check to see what size it was,” he said.

He went back to that spot and pulled a 5-pounder out of the reeds on a jig. He headed north, but didn’t catching anything of note.

After stopping in Harney Pond, he moved to a stretch that he hadn’t check since after the EverStart and flipped a 7-pounder and a 2-pounder.

“Tomorrow, I have a short day so I don’t know if I’ll be able to catch them or not,” he added. “I’m going to start out close in the same area and see if I can get two or three decent bites and then I’ll probably run up north and flip the rest of the day.”

Rich Dalbey found success at both ends of the lake.

6th: Powroznik Thinks More Are Coming

> Day 1: 5, 20-07

Jacob Powroznik is picking up where he left off in 2012, and that’s hovering in and around the Top 10. His cause was helped along by a 7-13 beast that came off a nest. He actually located the fish on Monday and it happened to still be there when he checked on it today.

“I was getting plenty of bites in practice, but the size wasn’t there,” he said. “At Okeechobee, in my opinion, you don’t just all great big ones. You just get an area and go fishing. Today, I got lucky and got two good bites. One of them was on the bed and I’m pretty sure the other one was on the bed. I was just flipping isolated reeds and happened to get those two good bites.

“To do well down here in a tournament the way it is right now, that’s what you have to have. You have to have a little luck on your side.”

He’s confident the same areas will continue to produce based on the way the weather has turned around in recent days.

“When we get up in the morning, it’ll almost be 65 degrees and the last few nights have been warm,” he said. “We’re on a new moon so there are going to be new fish coming every day. I think I can go back in the same areas. I probably won’t get as many bites, but hopefully I’ll get some better ones. I saw four or five today that were paired up on beds, which I didn’t see in practice. In my opinion, I think there are still a bunch of fish to come.”

9th: Schenck Mixed Up Baits

> Day 1: 5, 18-08

The key to Shad Schenck’s day was mixing up baits and covering a lot of water, which seems to be a developing theme this week. He was fortunate to stick a 7-02 kicker and had a couple other solid fish to go along with it.

“It’s not fishing like Okeechobee usually does, but it’s the same as far as you have to have at least one kicker or two a day to do well,” he said. “I went into some areas where I thought I’d catch a bunch of fish, but the bite was slow. It’d been slow all through practice for me and for a lot of people.”

He said the bite is picking up as the day wears on and he’s expects the morning bite to improve as the warmer weather stabilizes everything.

“I think in this tournament, it’s going to be difficult to find them congregated and grouped up,” he noted, “but when you get to a place where you can tell there’s a fish there, you better fish it real thorough with whatever bait is best and that’ll be the key to triggering several strikes.

“I could catch 10 pounds tomorrow or catch two or three big ones. The key is catching five first and the second thing, on Okeechobee especially, is you have to get another good bite. I had a couple 3-pounders to back that 7-pounder up. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.”

85th: Monroe Frustrated

> Day 1: 5, 10-05

Ish Monroe, the winner of the Okeechobee Bassmaster Elite Series last March, had a tough time finding any quality bites today.

“It was a really frustrating day because I probably caught 30-plus keepers today and when you weigh 10 pounds, it gets frustrating,” he said. “I flipped a couple limits the first thing this morning and started throwing a ChatterBait and culled through all of those. Then I went back to flipping and culled three of those and came out with 10 pounds.”

Tomorrow, he’s going to sweep through some areas that kicked out some decent fish earlier in the week.

“I have to go back through the areas I fished in practice because I had a good practice,” he said. “Every day, I caught a couple of good ones and I shook off a lot of good ones.”

Jacob Powroznik feels good about his chances to catch more big fish on day 2.

He believes one of the reasons why the fishing isn’t stacking up to years past is some sort of treatment that’s being sprayed on some of the vegetation and reeds around the lake. He said the reeds that held the winning stringers in last year’s Elite event are gone.

“There are some guys down here nuking everything and that’s why these fish are so screwed up,” he said. “They just don’t want to eat. They’re there. They’re just not feeling good. I can totally tell by the way they’re biting.

“They’re spraying everything. Pelican (Bay) looks the worst I’ve ever seen it and it’s one of the best places on the lake. They’re not even spraying the hyacinth. They’re spraying the reeds that are naturally from the lake. They’re just spraying to spray. They’re not spraying for any reason. It’s not the like the grass is out of control.”
