The first 25-pound sack showed up today at the Detroit River FLW Tour Open. Journeyman Indiana pro Bill McDonald caught it from Lake St. Clair, and he'll take a lead of nearly 3 pounds into the weekend as he pursues his first tour-level victory.

McDonald's bag topped any weighed thus far by more than 2 pounds and gave him a 2-day total of 46-11. That moved him up 3 places on the leaderboard as there was quite a bit of shuffling among the Top 10, but not much turnover.

Joe Balog held onto the No. 2 position with a 21-00 sack from Lake Erie to push his aggregate mark to 43-13. Texan Chris McCall weighed 21-06 for the second straight day and climbed 2 spots to 3rd with 42-12.

Spencer Shuffield, an Arkansan who relishes his rare opportunities to tussle with Northern smallmouths, boxed 20-07 and gained one position to 4th with 41-15. Jeff Vizachero, a local from Grosse Ile, Mich., completed the Top 5 with 20-10 today for a 41-06 total.

Here's how the Top 10 looks heading into the weekend, with red numbers in parentheses representing deficit margin from the leader:

1. Bill McDonald: 46-11
2. Joe Balog: 43-13 (2-14)
3. Chris McCall: 42-12 (3-15)
4. Spencer Shuffield: 41-15 (4-12)
5. Jeff Vizachero: 41-06 (5-05)
6. Cory Johnston: 40-14 (5-13)
7. Larry Nixon: 40-12 (5-15)
8. Tim Wilson: 39-11 (7-00)
9. Chad Pipkens: 39-01 (7-10)
10. Skip Johnson: 38-10 (8-01)

Just two anglers fell out of the Top 10 today, and one of those was day-1 leader Thanh Le. After catching nearly 23 pounds on day 1, the Arizonan managed just two fish for 7-05 and plummeted 80 places in the standings.

The legendary Nixon and the local Johnson (Goodells, Mich.) both made giant moves to get into the Top 10. Nixon, who's fishing in the same vicinity on St. Clair as McDonald and Shinichi Fukae (20th), sacked 22-15 to move up 30 places. Johnson, meanwhile, gained 46 slots with a 22-03 stringer.

In addition to Le, the other competitor who exited the Top 10 today was local Brian Metry, who fell from a tie for 5th to 38th with a four-fish, 13-02 stringer.

Tomorrow's weather forecast is again on the mild side – sunny skies with a high temperature of 89 degrees and a south/southeast wind to 10 mph.

The field was reduced to the Top 20 today and will be cut to 10 for the final day. The winner will be crowned Sunday based on highest cumulative weight.

McDonald Roped Pair of 5s

> Day 2: 5, 25-02 (10, 46-11)

McDonald's bag contained two bronzebacks that reached the 5 1/2-pound mark (the bigger of the two exceeded it by 2 ounces). He caught one on his first cast of the day.

"I did the same thing in the same place, but today I caught a little bit better fish," he said. "I lost one that seemed big – I never saw it, but it pulled awfully hard."

He got about a dozen keeper bites and had all of his weight by 10:30. He searched for untapped water after that and thinks he might've found some that could help him over the weekend.

"I'd like to be able to catch another 20 pounds tomorrow. I'd be tickled with that, but I'm tickled with what I've already caught."

His most significant victory to date came at an EverStart back in 1999. He's never led a tour-level derby before.

"I'm a little jazzed up, to say the least. I'll just go out and catch what bites tomorrow and we'll see what happens."

2nd: Balog Adjusted

> Day 2: 5, 21-00 (10, 43-13)

Erie expert Balog made the type of adjustment that could bode well for him over the weekend. He had only two fish at 1 o'clock from the places that had surrendered his 22-13 bag on day 1.

"After that I went to an area that's traditionally good when the lake is calm," he said. "I'd practiced there when it was rough and it was terrible, and I almost didn't go back, but it's a place I love and it'd been too good to me in the past.

"I stopped there and caught 21 pounds between 1:15 and 2:15."

He's dropshotting a Trigger X bait and throwing a large goby-replica swimbait. All of the fish in today's sack weighed between 4 and 4 1/2 pounds.

He's said the place should produce again tomorrow.

"It's a big area and I'm confident the fish will be around there, so I feel good about it. I figured I was going to have to switch water at least once, but I really didn't think I'd have to do it after the first day.

"It's kind of weird, but the open-water fish are definitely biting better as the day goes on. Timing is everything, and if it stays calm and I can keep running around, there's the potential for big bags every day."

Chris McCall has caught a fish that topped 5 pounds on each of the first 2 days.

3rd: McCall Backed Off Early

> Day 2: 5, 21-06 (10, 42-12)

McCall said his identical sacks have come together in similar fashion.

"It was pretty much about the same today as yesterday," he said. "By 11:30 today I was more or less practicing because I was pretty sure I had enough to make the cut. I found one area that seemed to have a lot of good fish on it."

He's caught one fish that weighed more than 5 pounds each day. Some of his bites have been generated by a reaction bait and others by a tube.

He thinks he stands a good chance of topping the 20-pound threshold again tomorrow.

"I've never really been around a group of fish like this – there's so many, and there's a lot of big ones in there. I never get nervous before tournaments, but I was nervous Wednesday night because I knew I was on a giant wad of big 'uns."

4th: Shuffield Having Fun

> Day 2: 5, 20-07 (10, 41-15)

Shuffield loves to catch smallmouths and he had a blast today as he boated about 40 of them. He's fishing on St. Clair, not far from where the McDonald/Nixon/Fukae trio is camped.

"I just have a passion for catching these things," he said. "My dad (longtime tour pro Ron Shuffield) didn't come to this one, and I said, 'How can you not go up there?' This is more like a vacation than a fishing tournament.

"I couldn't wait to get here. I was champing at the bit."

He had about 18 pounds in the first 20 minutes of fishing this morning.

"It only took me eight casts to catch them, but it takes five minutes to land each one. Some of these fish come up and jump 10 times, and then they go to stripping line."

His bag was topped by a 5-pounder, and he said he lost one of that size along with a 6. He's throwing a dropshot rig and a tube in 14 1/2 to 16 feet of water.

"Today I had what I weighed by 9:30, and then (he and his co-angler) just went and had some fun. I have 60-some waypoints in a 4-mile box and we just went and caught the heck out of the 3-pounders."

Local Jeff Vizachero finds himself in the Top 5 at the midway point.

5th: Vizachero in His Element

> Day 2: 5, 20-10 (10, 41-06)

The 49-year-old Vizachero, a used-car dealer and automotive service shop owner, is sleeping in his own bed each night as he makes his tour-level debut. The bag he caught today was 2 ounces lighter than his day-1 haul, but it gained him 4 places in the standings.

"I work 90 hours a week and it's hard to do something like this without jeopardizing a business," he said. "I'm a weekend warrior and I wanted to see how I could compete against the pros.

"I live here and I've fished Erie for a long time, but that doesn't mean I'm going to do better than anybody else. I've got a lot of spots to go to, but if the fish aren't where they should be, then I have to find out where they went."

He went through about 15 keepers today and the best of those was a 5 1/2-pounder.

"Today wasn't as good as yesterday – yesterday went about as perfectly as I could've mapped it out. Today was a little bit of a struggle, but it is what it is. That's Erie fishing and I'm used to it."

81st: Le Befuddled

> Day 2: 2, 7-05 (7, 30-03)

Le was at a loss to explain his free-fall down the standings sheet.

"I have no clue," he said. "The thing was there was still another boat there, and I saw him catch three nice fish. I guess my drift was just a little off."

He had an opportunity to box a limit, but lost three bites. Even if he'd boated them, however, his sack wouldn't have approached the one he caught on day 1.

He fished a tube and also worked various minnow-type baits on a dropshot rig in the 20- to 30-foot range.

"I got a 3-pounder right away this morning and then I caught a 4-something, so I thought it was going to be another good day. Then it just died."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 136 anglers, 112 limits (2 more than day 1), 6 fours, 6 threes, 5 twos, 1 one, 6 zeroes (3 more than day 1).

> The 2-day weights compiled by BassFan Big Sticks Jay Yelas and Luke Clausen were only about a pound and a half apart, but that represented 18 places in the standings (Yelas finished 56th and Clausen was 74th). To read their competition wrap-up reports, click here.
