David Dudley didn't quite nail down his second straight FLW Tour Angler of the Year (AOY) title at Lake Champlain today, but it'll take some mighty odd occurrences to prevent him from doing it on Saturday.

The Virginian stayed atop the tournament standings at the final major of the season with an 18-15 bag that gave him a 2-day total of 42-15. It could be a huge weekend for him, as back-to-back points titles are unprecedented in the circuit's 17-year history and the feat would give him the third of his career, tying Clark Wendlandt for most all-time. He's also pursuing his second Tour victory of 2012.

Joe Thompson, a Pennsylvanian who's never finished higher than 32nd in 13 career tour-level outings, sacked 20-09 to move into 2nd with 39-02. Jacob Powroznik, the only angler with a mathematical chance of unseating Dudley for the AOY (and it's a slim possibility), dropped one place to 3rd with 38-13 after catching 18-01 today.

Blake Nick moved up two places into a tie for 4th with a 17-03 stringer for a 36-13 aggregate. He's deadlocked with Spencer Shuffield, who boxed 17-13 today.

Here's how the Top 10 looks headed into the weekend, with red numbers in parentheses indicating deficit margin from the leader:

1. David Dudley: 42-15
2. Joe Thompson: 39-02 (3-13)
3. Jacob Powroznik: 38-13 (4-02)
4. (tie) Blake Nick: 36-13 (6-02)
4. (tie) Spencer Shuffield: 36-13 (6-02)
6. George Cochran: 36-09 (6-06)
7. Koby Kreiger: 36-08 (6-07)
8. Cody Bird: 36-05 (6-10)
9. Roland Martin: 35-15 (7-00)
10. (tie) Christopher Brasher: 35-13 (7-02)
10. (tie) Andy Morgan: 35-13 (7-02)

For Dudley not to win the AOY, he'd have to fall all the way to 20th place tomorrow and Powroznik would need to go on to win the event. Dudley began the tournament with an 18-point edge over his friendly home-state rival and even if he plummeted to 19th on day 3 and Powroznik hoisted the trophy on Sunday, Dudley would win the AOY tiebreaker (highest cumulative weight for the season).

The wind blew considerably harder today than on day 1, which made for a much more grueling return trip for the several dozen anglers who made the 70-mile run to Ticonderoga. At least half of the Top 20 were among that contingent, including the 72-year-old legend Martin, who came back with a day-best 20-10 to advance 59 places in the standings.

Other new arrivals to the Top 10 were Thompson, Cody Bird (17th to 8th with 18-00 today), Brasher (41st to 10th, 19-08) and Morgan (14th to 10th, 17-02). Moving out were Chad Morgenthaler (4th to 22nd, 13-12), Shad Schenck (5th to 51st, 11-08), Chad Grigsby (7th to 62nd, 10-07), Micah Frazier (9th to 33rd, 14-02) and Shane Long (10th to 40th, 13-03).

Joe Thompson's 20-09 sack was second-best of the day to Roland Martin's stringer, which was 1 ounce heavier.

More wind is in store for day 3 as the forecast predicts gusts to 16 mph out of the southwest. It's expected to change direction at some point during the day and blow at a lighter clip from the northwest, which might clear up some locales that got muddied today.

The field was reduced to the Top 20 today and will be cut to the Top 10 for Sunday. The winner will be determined by highest 4-day weight.

Dudley's Focus Narrows

> Day 2: 5, 18-15 (10, 42-15)

With the points crown all but locked away, Dudley's previously divided attention has shifted to winning the event.

"This has been a weird tournament," he said. "I always say that if you focus on winning, everything else falls into place, but it's almost been like I've had two tournaments going on at the same time. My mind's been all over the board trying to figure out how to win both of them.

"Where we're at now, I can start doing what I need to do to try to win the tournament."

His sack again consisted entirely of largemouths and he had all of his weight by 12:30. His biggest fish was just a shade under 5 pounds.

"I had to go to a different area today to catch most of my bag because my other area really slowed down. It's hard not to be confident with where I'm at right now, but the bites are getting fewer and fewer every day and I need to prepare my mind for that.

"I can't let myself get a negative attitude because I'm getting fewer bites. I still got quite a few, relatively speaking, but not a lot for Champlain."

He has a lead of more than 8 1/2 pounds over 20th-place Scott Canterbury, so it shouldn't be overly difficult to keep from sliding all the way down to that position tomorrow.

"As far as the (points race), that makes a 10-pound bag immediately become like an 18 1/2-pound bag," he acknowledged.

2nd: Thompson Fishing Alone

> Day 2: 5, 20-09 (10, 39-02)

Regardless of what happens from here one, Thompson is assured of his best-ever finish in a Tour event. His sack today was second-biggest to Martin's by an ounce.

"I had a decent bag by 11:00 and then I culled up three more times by 1:00," he said. "I gave myself 3 hours to get back in that wind and I made it in a lot less than that, but you just never know."

He went through approximately 30 keepers, the best of which was just a little under 5 pounds. He didn't lose anything of consequence today, although he farmed a 5 on day 1.

"There's nobody where I'm at. I'm fishing four different spots, but at my primary place there's nobody bothering me."

3rd: Powroznik Mixing it Up

> Day 2: 5, 18-01 (10, 38-13)

Powroznik is employing several techniques to catch his fish. The list includes a topwater plug, a frog and a crankbait and he's also doing some flipping.

Jacob Powroznik, who's in 3rd place, is the only angler with a mathematical chance to wrest the Angler of the Year title away from Dudley.

"It's just a matter of getting a couple of 5-pound bites," he said. "If you do, you're golden. If you don't, you catch 16 to 18 pounds.

"Yesterday they bit real good and I caught them all in 10 minutes, and today I got all of them in about eight casts. After that I went looking around, but the wind had things so messed up that you really couldn't do that. If the wind changes, it'll clear up some of the places that have gotten muddy and I think they'll bit a whole lot better."

He caught about 30 keepers, and the five he weighed were all in the 3 1/2- to 4-pound range.

"I lost one that was about 4 1/2 that would've bumped me up just a little, but that's fishing."

4th: Early Kickers for Nick

> Day 2: 5, 17-03 (10, 36-13)

Nick moved up two places in the standings even though his bag was about 2 1/2 pounds lighter than the one he caught the previous day. His first fish today was a 5-pounder and he caught a similar specimen on his initial cast on day 1.

"The fish were still there and still biting," he said, "but presentation-wise, I just couldn't fish it as good because of the wind. That's what made it tougher.

"My biggest fish have been coming early in the morning and I learned quite a bit about the area today. It's changing every day."

He caught about 10 keepers today.

"I've got some offshore milfoil I'm fishing and them I'm just running the banks in the afternoon. I'm really just junk-fishing. I've got some little key areas that I have to figure out every day, and that's good because it lets me go down there with an open mind."

5th: Lots of Bites for Shuffield

> Day 2: 5, 17-13 (10, 36-13)

Shuffield estimated that he caught at least 70 keepers today. He's fishing in the same vicinity as Dudley in Missisquoi Bay on the north end, but it's not like they're on top of each other.

"He's probably within 700 yards or so," he said. "There's not another soul right where I'm at.

"I'm getting a lot of bites – I'd say maybe 150 a day. Today I shook off a bunch of 3-pounders because they wouldn't have helped me."

He said all of his bites are coming on reaction baits.

"I'm right where I wanted to be for the next 2 days – 5th or better. I've yet to hit my two actual best spots. I've been watching them and nobody's been even close to them, so I'm excited."

6th: No Ti Run for Cochran

> Day 2: 5, 15-13 (10, 36-09)

Cochran said that if he were 20 years younger, he'd be down at Ticonderoga every day. But at 62, he's opting to fish much closer to the launch.

Blake Nick has been catching his best fish in the early part of the day.

It's working out so far.

"This is such a fun place to fish," he said. "The only thing that makes it tough is if the wind gets real bad, and I tried to find some places that were protected in practice. Today it paid off in a decent limit.

"I'm too old for that (Ti trip). I can't take that beating and banging like I used to be able to. I found some blacks (on the north end) and I've got three or four good areas. I caught about 30 keepers and four real good ones on day 1. Today I got about 20 keepers and one good one."

Flipping a Strike King jig in grass is producing the majority of his best bites. He's also fishing two types of worms – a big one and a wacky-style offering.

"My biggest one today was close to 5 pounds, then I caught 2 1/2-pounders until my arms got tired. I expect to catch quite a few again tomorrow and if things go my way, I'll have a real good tournament."

He jokingly passed along an idea for a rule change that he thinks the Tour should implement for its most senior competitors – one that would've had him fishing at Ti this week had it been in place.

"If you're over 60, they ought to just let you trailer and launch wherever you want."

51st: Wind Sank Schenck

> Day 2: 5, 11-08 (10, 31-03)

Schenck caught roaming smallmouths relating to big boulders en route to his 19-11 bag on day 1, but that pattern went kaput in today's wind.

"I probably got the same number of bites, but they were a lot smaller," he said. "It was real hard to even read the bottom on my Humminbird. I adapted and adjusted and I had some other opportunities, but it just didn't work out."

He threw a Poor Boy's Baits Erie Darter on day 1, then switched to a swimbait today.

"I got my biggest bites in practice on the swimbait and today I caught eight keepers on it, but nothing over 2 pounds. It was a weird deal, but smallmouth are like that. They've always got a trick up their sleeve."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 126 anglers, 118 limits (6 fewer than day 1), 1 four, 3 twos, 2 ones, 3 zeroes (three more than day 1).

> BassFan Big Stick Jay Yelas ended up 78th after catching just a little over 11 pounds today. To find out why he opted not to go back to Ticonderoga on day 2 and fished the northern end instead, click here.
