Reese Vs. VanDam Continues
Chapman's 18-12 Moves Him Into Lead, Smith Now 2nd

Brent Chapman caught big ones today where he caught little ones yesterday.

The weights at today's Toho Bassmaster Elite Series near Kissimmee, Fla. were a little like yesterday's. Two big bags came in, but for the most part, 10 pounds was still a solid day. Brent Chapman achieved both those marks. He opened the event with 10-14, added 18-12 today, and moved up from 9th into the lead.

With his 29-10 total, he leads by an 8-ounce margin with 2 days left to fish.

Bill Smith, Jr., who led day 1 with an 18-plus-pound sack, is Chapman's foil. Smith weighed 10-12 today and slipped to 2nd.

Toho stud Terry Scroggins, who's won two Toho Bassmaster Opens, caught 10 pounds even today and also slipped one spot – in his case, to 3rd.

The 4th- and 5th-place pros each made major moves. Jon Bondy caught 15-14 and moved up from 20th to 4th. Pete Ponds whacked the best bag of the event so far (18-13), which vaulted him from 50th to 4th.

The field was cut to the Top 50 for tomorrow's competition, and will further cut to the Top 12 for day 4. Here's a look at the current Top 12. Note that total weight is followed by distance from leader in red.

1. Brent Chapman: 29-10
2. Bill Smith, Jr.: 29-02 (0-08)
3. Terry Scroggins: 27-13 (1-13)
4. Glenn Delong: 25-09 (4-01)
5. Jon Bondy: 24-13 (4-13)
5. Pete Ponds: 24-13 (4-13)
7. Ben Matsubu: 23-11 (5-15)
8. Bernie Schultz: 23-04 (6-06)
9. Cliff Pace: 23-02 (6-08)
10. Bradley Hallman: 22-08 (7-02)
11. Mike Wurm: 22-02 (7-08)
12. Alton Jones: 19-05 (10-05)

Notable climbers inside the Top 25 include: Bradley Hallman (26th to 10th), Todd Faircloth (69th to 14th), Ish Monroe (62nd to 18th), John Crews (75th to 22nd), and Gerald Swindle (51st to 25th).

Those who slipped include: Frank Scalish (7th to 30th), Scott Rook (6th to 38th), Brian Snowden (13th to 45th), and Terry Butcher (8th to 46th).

Overall the flipping bite is dead, although sporadic flip-fish are being caught. Kelly Jordon blanked with the big stick today. Jared Lintner, who finished 101st, also worked the flipping bite, as did 82nd-place Steve Kennedy.

Instead it's worms – whether on Texas-rigs, dropshots, or Carolina-rigs – that are catching limits and the occasional good fish.

The bite remains brutally tough – four pros blanked today, and it only took a combined 12-08 to finish in the money.

The BASS Angler of the Year title remains undecided, although Skeet Reese pulled ever closer to clinching. He improved one spot to 15th, while Kevin VanDam moved up five spots to 13th.

Reese needs to finish 36th or better tomorrow to clinch. But even if he blanks tomorrow and finishes 50th, VanDam would still need to end the day in 4th or better to stay alive.

Reese declined an interview with BassFan.

VanDam noted: "I've had a couple of wins this year – it's been a really exciting season. It's been a lot of fun. I wish (the AOY race had) been closer coming into this one, but I've had to fight the second half of the season. It hasn't been easy for me, trust me. I'm fishing as hard as I can, and I'm having that same kind of week."

Chapman Excited

Brent Chapman's last tour-level victory was the Top Gun Championship in 2005. He's the first to admit that today's weight was totally unexpected.

About his lead position, he said: "I'm ecstatic, elated – just tickled to death. I was tickled to death with my (10 pounds) yesterday, so today I'm just as excited as you can be."

He "honestly doesn't know" what made the difference today. "It was just one of those days where I got the right bites, and put them all in the boat.

"I was fishing the same areas (as yesterday), where all I caught was little keepers. Today, I got some really good quality bites in there. The only difference is that I caught some fish flipping mats today, whereas I didn't do that yesterday."

Notable is he thinks his bait choice is key. He's using a Zoom Brush Hog in Kissimmee, but other competitors within sight are throwing something different.

About whether he thinks he can win, he said: "I really don't know. I think I can for sure make the Top 12. It's one of those things where if it's meant to be, it's meant to be. We'll see what happens.

"I'll go out and do my best," he added. "One of the things that was disappointing today was I lost three pretty good fish, and one was a 3 1/2-pounder. If I can go out and put every fish in the boat that bites, where I end up is where I end up.

"But I'd love to have the opportunity to fish Sunday and win this thing."

Bill Smith, Jr. scratched his Kissimmee itch today, but will spend tomorrow on Toho.

2nd: Smith Got The Itch

Smith bagged 18 pounds of Toho fish yesterday, and he had 10 pounds in the big lake this morning. But he couldn't resist the urge to check his Kissimmee spots.

He weighed a single fish out of Kissimmee, but that's not necessarily bad news. He's eliminated it and will now focus on Toho.

About his 2nd-place position, he said: "I feel pretty good. I ran down to Kissimmee to get it out of my system, and my conclusion is I'm staying on my Toho holes. The places where I was catching them on Kissimmee – there were lots of boats, and not enough fish. I'm glad I went and looked around.

"I probably caught 20-some keepers today," he noted. "But I lost three bigger fish. They didn't hang onto it. The bite was like a bunch of bluegills – every fish hit it about 100 times before they'd take it."

When he got back to Toho, he did catch a decent fish on a Carolina-rig, and thinks he'll try more of that tomorrow.

"I'm real glad I don't have to go down (to Kissimmee) tomorrow," he added. "I'm more focused for tomorrow than I was for today."

5th: Ponds' Plan Is Gusto

Ponds tripled his day-1 catch today, and credited the upsurge to "a minor adjustment." He made a small move within his area – "not very far, and sometimes that's all it takes."

He also fished "a little different method" and started catching better fish. Prior to his adjustment, he boxed a limit by 8:00, which he said gave him a safety net to try for bigger fish. He eventually culled all those fish out after his adjustment.

"Tomorrow my plan is to go for the gusto," he added. "There's no reason to fish for small ones. I'll go and try to win the tournament. I really don't have anything to lose, but everything to gain."

He feels he can duplicate his 18 pounds tomorrow. Also notable is he was more jacked about a smaller fish this morning than any of his better bites later on.

"My first fish this morning was 2 1/2 to 3 pounds. I pitched in there with this little bitty worm, set the hook, and the fish pulls pretty hard. My adrenaline rush was so pumped. It was the biggest fish I'd caught (all week).

"It's hard to describe, but it was pretty neat. I didn't expect to catch a 2 1/2 on that little bitty worm. I got more excited about that small one than any of the big ones."

Some Pros have relied on the morning bite for a small limit – others have caught their best fish in the waking hours.

12th: Jones Pumped For Berth

Alton Jones entered the event with a 27-point cushion against the final guaranteed Bassmaster Classic cutoff spot, so there was little room for error.

He began the day in 29th, but added 11-04 to his 8-pound day 1 and moved up to 12th. He's on pace to make the cut for Sunday, but most important for him is he's in the Classic now.

"I feel great about it," he said. "It'll really change my mindset. I've been so focused on the Classic that I really haven't even thought about doing well in the tournament. I've just really been trying to catch every fish I can.

"I'll really key now on bigger fish, which means I may or may not catch a limit. I found some good areas, and I feel I'm around big fish. Tomorrow I'll spend more time with the big stick in my hand, and try to key on those larger bites."

He said he knew he'd made it at about 11:30 this morning, but it was a tense moment. He connected with a 4-pounder, but it wrapped him on a pole. He was fishing a finesse worm on 6-pound line.

"He was so wrapped, I couldn't feel anything. After about 4 or 5 minutes, I felt it move again, and it came up – worn out on top of the water. I was in a frantic panic trying to get to that fish. All I had between it and me was some very frayed 6-pound test.

"I put my hand in its mouth and I knew I was going to Hartwell (site of the 2008 Classic)."

22nd: Crews Pumped Too

Crews entered the event at 36th in the AOY points – the last guaranteed Classic spot. He weighed just 3-07 yesterday, but his 13-14 day-2 sack moved him up 53 spots and well into position for a trip to Hartwell.

"I feel ecstatic," he said. "I feel real good – like there's a giant monkey off my back. I still have to look and see how everything shakes out – I still may need to go out there and catch them tomorrow. So I'm not completely relieved, but I did about as good as I could hope for."

About what was different today, he said: "I made a little technique change. I was fishing right near Jeff Kriet (20th). He told me something – it was real subtle – and I went to an area I knew and caught them. They're that finicky. It's unbelievable. And I caught a 4-pounder on my very last cast."

Tomorrow his goal is to catch 10 pounds, which he feels would assure him a trip to the Classic.

106th: Jordon Flipped

Kelly Jordon, a grass specialist, was pegged as one of the pre-tournament favorites. He caught 14 ounces on day 1, blanked today, and finished 106th.

He didn't need to catch a fish either day to make the Classic, he was guaranteed to be in, so he said his sole aim was to win. He had a good practice flipping, and caught some good weight, but that bite was a no-go both days of competition.

"There are a lot of things you can do to catch a limit, but I didn't fish that way," he said. "I flipped mats – the nastiest, thickest stuff I could. I got from 5 to 10 bites a day in practice, and some pretty good fish. I figured that was my best shot to win. I decided I was going to have a flipping stick in my hand, and I didn't care what happened.

"Pretty much nothing happened."

Two funny quotes from Jordon:

> "I lost a fish today – a 2 1/2-pounder. It was a mule."

> "I ran into Denny Brauer a lot the past few days. Here's Mr. Flipping, and he's out there casting a worm on the outside stuff. I even saw him catch one."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 108 anglers, 58 limits (11 more than yesterday), 13 fours, 13 threes, 11 twos, 7 ones, 5 zeroes (three more than yesterday), 1 DQ.

> Bondy caught the day's big bass (7-15).

> VanDam picked up an end-of-year bonus today – the Berkley Heavyweight Award – for catching the most total weight this season during full-field days. The prize was $15,000. "It's been a really exciting season and it's been fun," he said. "This is a nice bonus to get at the end of the year, and I appreciate it."

> Scalish on his drop: "Today was slow. I struggled all day to catch four."

> Gerald Swindle, in a desperate battle to make up a 52-point deficit and qualify for the Classic, lost a 7-pounder today in the last 15 minutes. He said he was so frustrated, he broke his rod, and in the process hurt his hand.

> John Murray fished within sight of Chapman, but finished 53rd and one fish short of the cut. For his report, which includeds info on a cool memento given out by BASS tonight, click here to go On Tour With the BassFan Big Sticks.
