Has 5-Pound Lead
Connecticut's Baksay Moves To The Top

Terry Baksay caught only about half as many fish today as he did on day 1, but his five best were enough to give him a 5-pound lead.

Terry Baksay's wife had a baby boy less than 2 months ago and they just built a new house in Connecticut, so this week would be an opportune time for him to earn his first tour-level win. He's halfway there after his 15-13 bag today gave him a 5-pound lead at the Lanier FLW Series with a 33-14 total for 2 days.
Florida's J.T. Kenney surged into 2nd with 15-11 today (28-14 total). He's just ahead of two Georgians named Tim – Peek (10-14 today, 28-13 total) and day 1 leader Farley (8-13, 28-06). North Carolina's Chris Elliott completed the Top 5 (14-05, 28-05).
Here's the remainder of the Top 10:
6. Wesley Strader: 28-03
7. Jay Yelas: 27-13
8. Curt Lytle: 27-12
9. Darrel Robertson: 27-08
10. Shinichi Fukae: 27-05
Nobody caught a sack today that rivaled Farley's 19-09 on day 1, but weights were up overall. There were eight stringers that weighed at least 15 pounds, as opposed to five the previous day. The cloud cover that enveloped the Gainesville, Ga. area might have helped in that regard.
Even with the clouds, it was another warm day (the high temperature was near 70 again) with very little wind. A similar temperature is predicted for tomorrow, but thunderstorms are also in the forecast. Many anglers near the top are unsure of how those will affect the bite.
The entire 200-angler field will fish again tomorrow, but 190 of them will be eliminated after the weigh-in. Weights will carry over for the Top 10 and the winner will be determined by the highest 4-day total.
Baksay's Bites Dwindled
Baksay's bag was more than 2 pounds lighter than on day 1, but he still tied Yelas for the day's second-biggest (North Carolina's Chris Baumgardner, who's 11th, took top honors for the day with 17-09). His biggest concern was that he caught only about half as many keepers.
"I caught 10, and that wasn't even close (to day 1)," he said. "I probably had 20 yesterday.
"I needed the sun. The fish are still there and I had the bites, but they just weren't eating the bait."
His first fish was a 6-01 largemouth, and he said it relieved a lot of pressure. The other four in his bag were spotted bass in the 2 1/2-pound range.
The pressure might be greater tomorrow since he likely won't get any help from the sun.
"I'll just have to bear down and catch them," he said. "I know there are a lot of fish in the area and I'll just have to pound them out. I'll have to slow down, and I'm not a slow fisherman. I've caught fish in the past on a jigworm and a jig, but that's not what I really like to do."
His baby son's baptism was scheduled for Sunday in Connecticut, but that's been postponed. "My wife's not real happy about having to reschedule everything," he said.
He could make up for it with the $100,000 1st-place check though. "That'd probably be spent twice before I even got home."
Kenney On the Rise
Kenney, in 2nd, started the FLW Tour season with two bombs (180th at Okeechobee and 155th at Murray) but got things turned around with a 31st at Pickwick. He's got a chance to do a lot better than that here.
This is a guy who nearly won the FLW Angler of the Year (AOY) in 2005, and he wasn't happy that he put himself in such a big hole to begin the year. "I had those two disasters, and I decided I couldn't go on like that," he said. "I'd already gotten myself out of debt once and I didn't want to go broke again. I had to get back to fishing."
He expected to catch a decent sack today, but he boated a 4-pounder that took it to another level. "I hadn't been getting any big ones doing what I've been doing, and I quit after I caught that one because I didn't think I could cull up," he said. "It came as a nice surprise."
He's fishing a pattern that "seems to be holding up pretty good. I'm just driving around the lake looking for certain things and when I find them, (the fish) seem to be there. I don't want to say what it is though, because it's just too easy."
He caught slightly more than a dozen keepers on it today.
"It's just a typical spring thing. When the water warms up, the fish go to the bank."
Farley Is Camera-Shy
Farley, a local who's fishing a tour-level event on the pro side for the first time, caught a bag that was nearly 8 pounds lighter than his 19-09 sack that led day 1.
"I fished hard, but my fish changed a little bit," he said. "They weren't eating real good. Plus, I had four fish stuck at my first spot that pulled off."
He said a Fox Sports Network camera boat was there to record his early miscues. He started to catch fish as soon as it departed.
"I told the camera guy that I'd heard about the camera-boat jinx, and that it must be true. As soon as they left me, I got five in the boat real quick. They weren't 200 yards away when I boated my first fish."
He was disappointed in his sack, but his confidence hasn't wavered. He figured to have one lackluster day out of the 4, and this was the best time for it to occur.
"I can still catch them. I'm glad that my bad day was today instead of one of the other days, because I had some wiggle room. If I can get 13 pounds tomorrow, I think that'll keep me where I want to be. Even with 10 pounds I should stay up there pretty high."

Jay Yelas moved into the Top 10 with a solid limit of largemouths.

Yelas On Largemouths
BassFan Big Stick Jay Yelas has yet to catch one of Lanier's famed spotted bass. He's focused solely on largemouths, and his 15-13 bag today moved him into 7th.
He caught 15 keepers. He had only six on day 1.
"I had a lot better day today," he said. "I figured out a little something that I hadn't been doing, and I think that made a little bit of a difference. Also, I think the largemouths were a little more active, and the cloudy weather seemed to help. We'd been having chamber-of-commerce weather."
He's fishing shallow water with a jig, a crankbait and a spinnerbait. His bag included two 4-pounders.
"I'm going to stick with it because I think it's my best chance to win the tournament. One of the biggest factors for me is fishing only for the quality largemouths. It takes some guts to do that because this lake has so many spotted bass.
"You're subject to not catching a limit this way, and it's very tempting to just go catch a limit of spots. But my strategy is to throw caution to the wind and go after the big largemouths."
He's a bit concerned about the heavy winds forecast for tomorrow, but said there's no reason to panic. "A strong wind could mess up the place where I caught most of them today, but I have some secondary places that seem to be pretty good."
Scheide Sinks
Arkansas' Ray Scheide was 4th with a 15-15 bag on day 1. He caught just three fish for 6-04 today and tumbled 38 places.
"Fish tend to do that to you," he said. "If you fish long enough, you're going to have that happen to you."
His primary spot has suspended fish that come to toward the surface when the baitfish rise. But that didn't happen until late today, probably because there was no sun and no wind.
"The bait just stayed down today. (The rise) is an afternoon thing, and I don't know the lake well enough, so I had to stick around and see what would happen. A little breeze picked up late this afternoon and I caught the three fish just before I had to go in."
He'll try to find some new stuff tomorrow and will likely target shallower fish. "The shallow bite is usually pretty good on moving baits like Rat-L-Traps, and they might be a little more aggressive. I think there's bigger fish out there on the main lake, but I might be able to get 14 or 15 pounds on some of the secondary points.
"I also have some largemouth that haven't bitten yet. They've got to be getting hungry."
Notable
> Day 2 stats – 200 anglers, 100 limits (12 fewer than yesterday), nine zeroes (four more than yesterday).
> Baksay's lead would be even greater, but he incurred an 8-ounce penalty for a dead fish. "It died on the way up," he said. "The hook must have gone through to its brain."
> Buford resident Tom Mann Jr. whacked 15-04 today to move up 69 spots. He's 19th with a 25-02 total.
