Burghoff Now On Top; Reese Climbs To 2nd

Miles Burghoff weighed a 16-13 stringer on day 2 of the Lake Okeechobee MLF Pro Circuit in Florida to take over the lead at the midway point with a 42-15 total. He'll go into the weekend with an advantage of a little more than 3 1/2 pounds over 2nd-place Skeet Reese.

Burghoff, seeking his first tour-level victory in his third professional season, moved up one place from day 1 despite a sack that was more than 9 pounds lighter than his previous haul. Rookie Jim Neece Jr., who led after day 1 with 27-00, dropped to 3rd with an 11-09 haul.

“It all changed today, and the pressure in my area was incredibly strong,” said Burghoff. “There were 25 boats in that spot and I was within a pitch or two from at least one other boat for the entire day.”

Burghoff said with the amount of pressure being a factor, he tried to find something fresh and target things other anglers may had overlooked.

“I had to switch it up to get bites,” he said. “I was still flipping and pitching, but looked for places others weren’t hitting and tried to find little stretches with less traffic.”

He said his plan for tomorrow is to join the crowd again because he believes there are enough fish in that area to get another solid limit.

“There are still some big females in there, so I am going out with the same plan in the morning,” said Burghoff. “I’m sticking with that area until I’m told otherwise by the fish.”

Reese's 21-09 sack included an 8-08 specimen that was the heaviest fish to come to the scale on day 2.

He enticed the bite on with a 6-inch Berkley PowerBait The General. It bit shortly before 11 o’clock, a pivotal time this week, according to Reese.

“Yesterday, they started biting at the same time,” he said. “I didn’t catch as many today, maybe 10, but they were bigger. I’m just waiting for it to get right because you never know when a new wave (of spawning fish) will be coming.”

Neece had a difficult day, but caught enough to keep himself in contention.

“I don’t know what happened other than they didn’t bite,” he said. “I lost two big ones today and that hurt my bag a few pounds.”

Neece stuck to the same area up north that produced the 27-pound bag on day 1, but after struggling this morning, he changed tactics to salvage the day.

“I changed up baits, but the hookup percentage of what I switched to was a little off. I know they are in my area and they gotta eat sometime, so I’m going back there again tomorrow.”
