RE: Balog on excess tackle – Welcome to getting old!
RE: Balog on excess tackle – I believe most older tournament fishermen have the same problem. I know I do.
RE: Balog on excess tackle – Fantastic article! Joe deserves some kind of literary award – he can use it as the centerpiece for his organized tackle.
All jokes aside, Mr. Balog is a gifted wordsmith.
RE: Balog on excess tackle – I can completely relate to what you're talking about. I started fishing tournaments 15 years ago or so, although never made it to the bigs, and that’s okay to me. I too still have stuff I can’t get rid of and probably never will. I've still got the square-bill crank I won my first tournament with and the rod and reel. Good article, as always.
RE: Grigsby's surgery – Don't know what to do or say. I mostly just want to give you a hug and send you positive thoughts.
RE: Grigsby's surgery – I had kidney cancer 8 years ago and they removed it. You may go fishing in 4 weeks but I bet 8 hours in a boat will not happen. It took me about a year and a half to regain full strengthm. God Speed, Shaw!
RE: Grigsby's surgery – Get well, Shaw. I'll be thinking positive thoughts for you.
Just curious how you determine your World Rankings. How can you compare anglers when the two formats (every fish counts vs. five biggest fish) are totally different and require totally different strategies?
BassFan says: The primary criteria for the rankings are an angler's finish in each event and the strength of the field for those events (i.e. tournaments with a lot of highly ranked anglers are the strongest). The tournament format plays no role.
RE: 25-pound poll – Not 25 pounds, but 24-10 with a 10-06 big fish on the first day of competition at the 2015 BFL All-American on Kentucky lake. First fish of the day to get started, 8-pound mono line on a dropshot. No big fish award for that tournament is given, but definitely an exciting moment.
RE: MLF Cup Overflow debuts – I watched Overflow last night. It was really fun and insightful. They got into the weeds a little, the real details about fishing, and they had fun. I laughed a lot.
RE: Catching bass with Wilks – Dustin shares a lot of vital information in this article that can be absorbed by seasoned anglers or beginners. From baits, rods, line and the reason he chooses them is all important. He even tells exactly how the fished were positioned, which is very helpful for a lot of people. It’s platforms like this that a lot of us probably wished we had access too when we were younger.
RE: 30,000 bass – Roy is a man of dedication, good humor and great character. What a wonderful tribute to him and his dedication to the art of fishing! He is a true teacher and treasure.
RE: Campbell dies – The first Bassmaster show I ever watched had Charlie Campbell fishing a Zara Spook. I had just bought my first VCR and recorded that show and watched him catch that bass over and over in slow motion. I think I still have that tape. RIP, Charlie.
RE: Yelas elected to Hall – We are all proud to have had the opportunity to work with and be a proud sponsor of Jay! You make us all proud of all your well-deserved rewards for a superlative job of representing the world of fishing.
RE: 30,000 bass – I too have been keeping records of not only my catches, but also strikes since 1981. I keep individual outing records and a cumulative strike log, all of which I've converted to electronic data.
RE: 30,000 bass – An absolutely heroic, epic journey. As his son I can attest to the facts of this article. I'll also add that miserable weather conditions are no factor to this man. The saying, "I love a challenge" has been spoken as he fires another cast into freezing rain, on an empty lake, before he swings another one in. A true Lake Wolf.
RE: Martens' health – God speed. A-Mart!
RE: Martens' health – I have always regarded Aaron as one of the greatest anglers in the long history of our sport. After watching his latest video discussing his upcoming surgery, I have more respect than ever for this man. Taking the time to talk to his fans at such a difficult time speaks volumes about his strength and character and I hope that he can return to the water as soon as possible.
RE: Martens' health – Pulling for you, Aaron. God speed for your recovery.
RE: Catching bass with Wilks – I was Dustin’s camera guy for three years before I moved to Texas and he became a great friend. I remember on several occasions we were filming on certain bodies of water and I had fished a tournament there the weekend before and I would say "hey, I heard the winning sack came from this area" or I’d tell him we won the tournament in a certain area. His response was "let’s go try somewhere else."
I learned quickly to keep my mouth shut until the end of the day. But I must say if everyone saw all the hard work that he put into making every episode, you’d truly appreciate his passion for fishing and his love for the sport. By far best job I ever had and so many good memories and laughs that I’ll never forget!
RE: Martens' health – Thanks for the detailed update. Aaron has been on our minds and in our prayers. Thankful he's doing as well as he is and know for certain he's up for the future. May God richly bless him and his family.
RE: Martens' health – Thanks for the update on Aaron Martens' situation/condition. Couldn't find it elsewhere. You are always on top of things. Thanks.
RE: Martens' health – I have known and followed Aaron since he started fishing the U.S. Open in 1996 at Lake Mead. I fished against him many times in the WON circuit. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family, and for a complete recovery.
RE: Martens' health – Aaron, you are an inspiration to the fishing world on the water and now in this battle. Always positive and pushing forward. God's powerful healing and strength be with you, sir.
RE: Wilks' day with Eaker – Guy's book (Catching Bass Like a Pro) was a great read. When I purchased the book long ago he responded to a note with a personal message and from that point on I knew he was and is a true gem of a man. Just another great fishing memory.
RE: Wilks' day with Eaker – Don’t ever discount anyone because age is a number. I’ve seen old 40-year-olds and young 80-year-olds. My oldest fishing partner is now in his late 70’s and still is young. I’m 66 and we both are blessed. Mr. Bentz, I love your new Caymas boats and look forward to it being my next. God bless everyone.
RE: Catching bass with Wilks – Two shows have aired. He needs to let us know where he is fishing, what lake, what time of year, more info on conditions, tackle, equipment.
RE: Martens' health – Prayers for you and your family – get well soon.
RE: Martens' health – Prayers for A-Mart and his family. Great people!
RE: Martens' health – Prayers and best wishes to Aaron and his family.
RE: Martens' health – Prayers out to you and the family.
RE: Martens' health – My family will keep you and your family in our thoughts during this difficult time.
RE: Martens' health – Godspeed Aaron, we will be praying for you. Fish on!
RE: Martens' health – Prayers for Aaron and his family.
RE: Martens' health – Prayers to Aaron and his family for a rapid recovery.
RE: Martens' health – We definitely will be praying for you, Aaron. Your belief in God and family will get you through. Thank you, God, for this man. For his family may use him to touch many of the young boys and girls who look up to him so he can point them to you, Lord Jesus. Amen.
RE: Martens' health – Prayers.
RE: Martens' health – No one should have to endure things like this – much less not able to have family/loved ones by their side. My heart/love/prayers go out to Aaron and his family through this horrible, uncertain time, made so much worse by this COVID nightmare we are all immersed in.
RE: Martens' health – Sending prayers for you and your family and a full recovery. Love from Lake Chickamauga.
RE: Catching bass with Wilks – I enjoy watching your show. I live by Delaware River and hope to put the info to good use. Hope you've got Lake Gaston and Lake Anna on your filming agenda. I will be setting my DVR to watch other episodes.
RE: Catching bass with Wilks – Dustin makes a great show. It's very instructional and informative, even for a veteran weekend warrior. I wish he would get his show on My Outdoor TV.
RE: 25-pound poll – 34 pounds, 4 ounces. FLW Stren Series, Lake Amistad.
RE: Treasured Fat Rap – They don't make 'em like that anymore. The process is called "foil" – hand-made. I buy all I find, and yes, some are three decades old. Great fishing to you.
Thanks for the news about the toxic waste dump on Rayburn's headwaters.
To my friends in Texas: Do not believe a word of their assurances about the safety of their dastardly plan, or its "benign" environmental effects. We all need to step up to stop the polluters, as B.A.S.S. members did in the 1980s. Today, we are severely threatened in Minnesota by a copper-nickel mine on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness by a Chilean mining venture that has high risks to permanently despoil this unique and precious region. And the once-squashed Pebble Mine promoters have raised their ugly head in Alaska. Beware and fight these projects until their final rejection!
RE: Lee being cautious – Hey Matt, I have had Type 1 diabetes for 41 years. I do local tournaments but not state anymore. It's a lot easier now with pumps. I used to have to check my blood on the water and maybe give myself a shot of insulin. It wasn’t easy! I have had complications and lost my right leg last year. I did a local tournament 3 months after my surgery. It was not easy, but I love fishing tournaments. Now I have a prosthetic and it’s a little easier, but getting in my boat isn't and can be really funny – and when my partner needs the net I just laugh. I just wanted to say hi and hang tough! Go get 'em!
