House preserves defense spending in sports

The U.S. House of Representatives removed language on Wednesday from the 2013 Department of Defense spending bill that would have prevented military sports sponsorships, including the National Guard's deal with FLW. Reps. Jack Kingston (R-Ga.) and Betty McCollum (D-Minn.) prepared an additional amendment to add the language back in in an attempt, they said, to save taxpayers $72 million.

Late Wednesday, the second amendment failed as well, by a 216-202 vote, mostly along party lines.

It's the second year in a row McCollum's efforts to curb military spending on sponsorships in pro sports have failed. Last year, an amendment she authored targeting defense spending in NASCAR failed in the House.
