Wisconsin tandem wins Sturgeon Bay Open

The team of Korey Sprengel and Ryan Dempsey caught at least 25 pounds each day en route to winning the Sturgeon Bay Spring Open, which concluded Saturday.

Sprengel, a pro walleye tournament angler from Beaver Dam, Wis., and Dempsey, a fishing guide in Wisconsin, followed up their 26.57-pound bag on Friday with a 25.92 stringer Saturday to finish with 52.49 and clinch the win over the 138-boat field by less than a quarter-pound.

Day-1 leaders Shaun Kruzitski and Jason Corro settled for second with a 52.25 total. Adam Rasmussen and Sam McSharry took third with 52.20 after catching 27.22 on day 2.

The field was dotted with pro bass anglers, some of whom were able to compete following the postponement of the Elite Series tournament at Fort Gibson Lake.

Jeff Gustafson and Seth Feider teamed up to catch 26.98 Saturday to finish 16th with 46.87. The brother tandem of Cory and Chris Johnston took 22nd with 45.54. FLW Tour angler Matt Stefan teamed up with his brother, Michael, and finished 57th with 39.18. Elite Series pros Chris Groh and Brad Whatley finished a distant 119th with 15.59, all caught on day 1.
