Have you ever wondered how many Senkos are produced in a given year by Gary Yamamoto Custom Baits? According to a new book about the company's founder, the total for 2016 was well in excess of 17 million.
Seventeen million!
The book, Gary Yamamoto: My Life with Fish, was penned by longtime Bassmaster scribe Steve Price. At just over 100 pages, it's a quick, easy read – the entire thing could be devoured in one late-summer afternoon.
Each of the nine chapters covers a different part of Yamamoto's life, from his childhood in Hawaii through a stint in the Air Force to his purchase of the campground in the Arizona desert near Lake Powell that led him to develop a burning interest in bass fishing. From there, he morphed into the icon that BassFans around the world know today, having found success as a professional tournament competitor, bait manufacturer and cattle rancher and becoming one of bass fishing's premier ambassadors both in the U.S. and abroad.
It tells the story of how the ubiquitous Senko came to such prominence – it was initially considered a flop because it didn't catch fish when applied the way it was originally intended. There are one-page tips at the end of each chapter that contain the subject's advice on fishing the Senko, the Hula Grub, dropshot rigs, flipping, the Neko rig, etc.
