Washington, D.C.-area media outlets have reported that two brothers from Woodbridge, Va. died on the Potomac River on Sunday when their 15-foot bass boat overturned in the vicinity of Mattawoman Creek. The victims were 45-year-old Fermin Alvarado and 31-year-old Matias Alvarado-Arrue.
The brothers were not wearing life jackets. Chris Morrison of the Nation's Capital Bass Federation, which conducted an event on the river that day, said in an email to BassFan that weather was likely a factor in the incident.
"The brothers were not fishing a tournament, they appeared to just be out there on their own," Morrison wrote. "The weather reports all looked okay and then, like the typical Potomac River, the weather changes in a nano-second.
"The area they flipped is one of the most traveled areas on the river – I ran through the same spot four times (on Sunday)."
