FLW, Evinrude fight childhood cancer

FLW announced today that the FLW Foundation, the company’s 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to connecting youth to their natural resources and promoting education, conservation and an active lifestyle, has joined forces with their longtime partner Evinrude and the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation (NPCF) to promote the ‘Fishing Funds the Cure’ program throughout the 2018 tournament season.

The NPCF partnered with the two industry entities to raise funds for pediatric cancer research by combining the FLW Foundation’s mission to support the sport of fishing with NPCF’s mission to find less toxic, more targeted treatments for pediatric cancer by engaging all Americans to take a child fishing and support pediatric cancer.

Participants in the campaign are encouraged to take a child fishing and post their catches to social media and tag the NPCF, FLW and Evinrude using #FISHINGFUNDSTHECURE. Friends, family and co-workers are then challenged to make a donation to the NPCF based on a dollar amount assigned to one of the following parameters: the total number of fish caught, the length of the fish in inches or total ounces caught. For example: if the angler catches 10 fish, encourage everyone to donate $10, or $1 per fish. If the angler catches three 12-inch fish (36 inches total), encourage everyone to donate $3, $12 or $36.

“While most cancer research focuses on adult treatments, NPCF funds clinical trials to fast track less-toxic, more targeted treatments for children,” said David Frazer, CEO of the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. “For NPCF, this natural partnership reinforces that raising awareness and funding cures for cancer is something anyone and everyone can participate in. We’re also very excited to have Evinrude’s support as the official outboard motor partner for this program.”

The campaign will be actively promoted throughout the 2018 FLW Tour season by FLW Tour pro Cody Kelley (pictured) of Conway, Ark. Kelley currently works with the FLW Foundation to showcase its initiatives, including hosting FLW Foundation Unified Fishing Derbies all over the country and inviting children battling cancer to attend for a day of fun on the water.

“I encourage all anglers to get involved with this campaign,” said Kelley. “Together we can engage the spirit of anglers to apply their love of fishing to help kids with pediatric cancer.”

The program will feature prizes, including a VIP trip to the Forrest Wood Cup, for anglers who raise the most money.
