Shimano introduced a key component to its Varsity Program with its inaugural career seminar held last weekend in Anderson, S.C.. More than 300 high school-age anglers, along with many parents, attended the classes and career day
“When we introduced the Shimano Varsity Program in 2016, one of our key goals was to mentor young anglers in hopes of not only making them better anglers, but also preparing them for life after school,” said Shimano’s Frank Hyla. “While many may aspire to make a living as a professional angler, we want to show them that by going down the right path with their education, there are many opportunities for a fulfilling career in the fishing and marine industries.”
As part of the career seminar, Hyla notes the young anglers heard from folks like Josh Airey with the Don Coffey Company, one of the leading sales-rep firms in tackle business, and Bill Carson, who heads up on-site event activities for Johnson Outdoors. Yamaha Marine’s Bjorn Lindroth talked about the proper technical training to be an outboard motor technician – currently a much-needed position at boat dealerships nationwide, while Nic Wilson with ANGLR Labs shared his expertise and background in smartphone apps and how his company started in the fishing business. Also presenting was Ronnie Moore, a former college bass angler who, after earning his journalism degree, is now working for B.A.S.S. Media.
Hyla said a highlight of the seminar – especially with parents - was the presentation by Isaac Payne, bass fishing coach at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). He talked about fishing scholarships available at schools like his and many others. Payne noted the SCAD fishing team includes both men and women – many who not only enjoy the sport, but see themselves after graduation working in graphic arts, industrial design, and other careers in the fishing and marine businesses.
As it did this year, Shimano will again award college scholarships to deserving high school seniors and college students already pursuing a degree in fisheries, wildlife and natural resource fields. More Shimano career seminars will take place at select events in 2018.
