Tournament fishing pays off for Bird

About 15 years ago, a 10-acre tract of land in Granbury, Texas, caught Cody Bird’s eye. He envisioned building a home there and eventually relocating to the plot. His plan was to make the down payment with money he’d won in bass fishing tournaments and then slowly pay it off with other tournament winnings.

As he prepares for his fifth career Forrest Wood Cup this week, he’s happy to say the land is paid off, thanks to his tournament success over the last year.

“I won a bit back in ’02 or ’03 and I put the down payment on it,” said Bird, who operates a concrete business when he’s not fishing tournaments.

He was able to pay off the balance with the winnings he earned by finishing 3rd at the Atchafalaya Basin Bassmaster Central Open last October and taking 2nd at the FLW Series Championship at Table Rock Lake, where he netted $25,000. His runner-up showing at Table Rock also guaranteed him a spot in this year’s Cup, where he’ll go home with at least another $10,000.

“It’s just cool to think I bought it with bass fishing money and paid it off with bass fishing money,” he said.
