Cory Johnston has two top-5 finishes at the Thousand Islands in FLW Series competition in the past. This week, the FLW Tour competitor from Cavan, Ont., is looking to secure a victory. On Thursday, he got off to a good start, weighing 23-07 to take the day-1 lead with all Lake Ontario smallmouth.
The event is based out of Clayton, N.Y., so anglers have access to the St. Lawrence River or they can run out to the big waters of Lake Ontario. Johnston started in the river, then did most of his damage on the lake.
Fellow FLW Tour angler Kurt Mitchell had a strong day with 22-14 and sits in 2nd. New York angler Joseph Fonzi is 3rd with 22-08.
