Lake Okeechobee: A toxic lake?

Last week, a documentary entitled Toxic Lake: The Untold Story of Lake Okeechobee debuted on The Weather Channel.

The piece focuses on the causes and effects of the increase in toxic algae in and around the lake and its impact on the central Florida ecosystem, including how the water flowing out of the lake has affected water quality on both coasts of the Sunshine State.

It's a multifaceted situation involving stakeholders from the fishing and farming industries as well as powerful influences from the political arena. To read the in-depth article that accompanied the documentary, click here.

You can view the documentary below, as well as a video response of sorts from former FLW Tour Angler of the Year, Forrest Wood Cup champion and Lake Okeechobee lifer Scott Martin. It's Martin's view that the lake is healthy and vibrant and he took exception to the negative portrayal of the lake's condition in the documentary.
