Brauer added to Cup field (updated)

The 50-man field for the upcoming Forrest Wood Cup at Wheeler Lake is set following the completion of the Lake Champlain FLW Tour on Sunday.

There was just one double-qualifier this year in Scott Martin, who finished 9th in Angler of the Year points, but also qualified via his AOY title in 2015. That opened the door for Troy Morrow, the 36th-place finisher in points this season, to lock up a berth.

The following is a rundown of who’s in the field and how each angler qualified. The Cup is Aug. 4-7 at Wheeler with Huntsville, Ala., serving as the host city.

FLW issued a statement Monday that listed Denny Brauer as a qualifier for the Cup via his 10th-place finish at the 2015 FLW Series Championship.

Brauer is replacing Florida angler Trevor Fitzgerald, who was ruled ineligible by FLW last December after he pleaded guilty in federal court in July 2015 to one count of deprivation of rights under color of law, a felony charge that resulted from Fitzgerald’s involvement in a case of unreasonable use of force by police officers.

Fitzgerald was one of five Marion County (Fla.) sheriff’s deputies suspended following the beating of a suspect in Marion Oaks in August 2014. Fitzgerald has since left his job with the Marion County Sheriff’s Department.

According to FLW Series and Tour rule No. 9 covering sportsmanship, FLW has the ability to limit an angler’s participation in tournaments if, among other things, an angler has been convicted of a felony in the past 36 months.

FLW’s Rule 9 is as follows:

9. SPORTSMANSHIP: All contestants are required to follow high standards of sportsmanship, courtesy and conservation and to conduct themselves in a manner that will be a credit to themselves, to FLW, FLW’s sponsors, the sport of fishing and FLW’s efforts to promote the sport. Conduct not complying with these standards includes, but is not limited to, the following:

> Violation of, or failure to comply with, any of the rules for the 2016 FLW Series.
> Consumption and/or possession of alcoholic beverages or any kind of mind-altering substance during registration or tournament hours extending through the weigh-in procedure.
> Abuse of, or addiction to, mind-altering substances.
> Conviction of a felony within the past 36 months.
> Suspension/disqualification, probation or ban from any tournament or fishing organization.

> Any other words, conduct or actions reflecting unfavorably upon efforts to promote safety, sportsmanship, fair competition and compliance with tournament rules, or which fail to comply with the standards set forth in the first sentence of paragraph 9.
In case of any conduct not complying with the standards outlined above, FLW shall have the right to refuse an application to compete, to deny a confirmed application to compete by returning the entry fee (minus deposit), to disqualify a contestant or impose any penalty outlined in paragraph 1.
