Horton adds Vicious 11/30/2009

Vicious fishing today announced that it signed a multiyear endorsement agreement with Bassmaster Elite Series pro Tim Horton. The deal covers Vicious fishing lines including the company's braid, All-Purpose, fluorocarbon and Ultimate lines.

Horton noted: "I've known and worked with Vicious pro-staff manager Chris Dutton for about 10 years and last year asked if I could try some line. I like the castability of the different lines and the consistency with each one. Braided line is such a big part of my fishing style and it has great castability, reliability and strength. I'm really looking forward to using Vicious line during the 2010 season."

Vicious pro-staff manager Chris Dutton added: "Timmy brings a wealth of knowledge that will lend different perspectives and recommendations as we constantly seek to improve. Being able to tap into his experiences in different fishing situations will add valuable insight."

Duckett's new rods 11/30/2009

Bassmaster Elite Series angler Boyd Duckett, the 2007 Bassmaster Classic champion, announced recently that he has established an Alabama-based company that will produce innovative, high-end fishing rods that introduce microguide technology.

The new company, Duckett Fishing LLC, will manufacture rods that were created and tested by industry-leading designers and professional anglers. The team includes renowned rod designer Ken Whiting and former E-21 (Carrot Stix) executive Sean Schuyler.

According to a press release, the ultra-lightweight rods – called MicroMagic – offer unmatched sensitivity and, because of the rods’ microguides, will allow anglers to significantly increase their casting distance and accuracy.

Duckett will use MicroMagic rods competitively beginning in February at the 2010 Bassmaster Classic. He added that other pro anglers will soon join Duckett Fishing’s pro staff.

“I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am about this venture," he said. "What we’re doing at Duckett Fishing is making rods that take existing technology to a whole new level. What we’ve done with microguides is extremely special and ahead of the curve.

"We developed these rods by getting a lot of input from custom rod builders who know what they’re doing. Then we combined that with the best kind of research and development – on the water testing by pro anglers."

He said the rods will be available online through the company website, www.duckettfishing.com, and will be in retail stores next year.

Earlier this year, Duckett severed ties with E-21 primarily because of what he described in a July 2009 news release as concerns “about the general quality of the rods being made and how warranties are being honored.” He claimed that the rods weren’t being produced as they were initially designed.

The split with E-21 prompted the decision to create his own company.

“This is the right thing to do. We have assembled a terrific team and we’re hitting the ground running. We’ll have some exciting announcements over the next few months, but what is so significant is we finally have full control of quality and production and can offer the public innovation that’s not purely profit-driven.”

Bonus Bucks: co-anglers eligible 11/30/2009

Bonus Bucks will now be available to co-anglers who drive Toyota Trucks and compete in sanctioned BASS and FLW events in 2010. Also new for 2010 is the expansion of the Bonus Bucks program to include tens of thousands of anglers from The Bass Federation, Inc. (TBF).

The expanded invitation to co-anglers and the TBF in 2010 more than doubles the number of serious anglers who now become eligible for Bonus Bucks. The program continues to expand based on its success and popularity.

Bonus Bucks paychecks, along with a stable of dependable and eligible Toyota tow vehicles propel the program’s popularity. From Wisconsin Federation Nation angler Randy Wiecorzek, who won $8,750 in Bonus Bucks this year, to Sequoia owner and Bassmaster Classic Champion Alton Jones, whose Bonus Bucks winnings totaled $12,000 – those who played got paid.

The Bonus Bucks program is totally free and is available to anglers who tow with a 2007 or newer Tundra, Sequoia, 4Runner or Tacoma and fish in Bonus Bucks-sanctioned events. As always, you don’t have to win the tournament to win the Bonus Bucks; you simply have to be the highest-finishing registered participant and finish in the top 50% of the field.

To find out more, and to make sure you are signed-up, visit www.ToyotaFishing.com or call Kendell at (918) 742-6424.

Svebek out for 2010 11/24/2009

Arkansas' Carl Svebek III, a full-time performer on the FLW Tour since 1999, told BassFan today that he will not compete on the Tour in 2010 due to financial constraints. He recently lost his sponsorship deal with Team Castrol, which he'd had for the past 7 seasons.

"I just found out 2 weeks ago and that doesn't leave a lot of time to work on things," he said. "It's pretty hard to swallow because I don't think anybody loved being out there more than I did. But the way it is right now, there's nothing out there for me. We'll just have to wait and see what the future holds."

He's logged six Top-10 finishes on the Tour, with a best showing of 2nd at Toho in 2008, and he's competed in three Forrest Wood Cups.

He said he'll spend most of 2010 working for fellow Tour pros Darrel Robertson, who owns a manufacturing plant, and Bobby Curtis, who's a contractor.

"I hope to get out and fish some – I can't see giving it up altogether, but it'll depend on how much time I have through the year. I'd just like to thank Evinrude and Ranger for being so good to me over the years, and all my other sponsors, too."

New Pure HQ 11/24/2009

The world headquarters for Pure Fishing has moved to a new office in the Carolina Research Park. The location at 7 Science Court, Columbia, SC, 29203, is now the home for global administration, durables product management and sales and marketing for the Americas.

Columbia became the Pure Fishing headquarters in 2008 – the original Shakespeare facility served as the interim location for company until the new location was selected.

“Completing the relocation process of a global headquarters for a company as large as Pure Fishing is exciting and we value the support of our parent company Jarden Corporation, our Columbia-based team and local partners in making this significant company headquarters transition a reality,” said president and CEO John Doerr. “By purchasing this building, we are demonstrating a commitment to the long-term success of our organization.

"Our co-workers in Columbia now have facilities to perform their responsibilities in an environment that allows them to continue creating great products and programs to strengthen our partnerships with our anglers, customers, vendors and pro staff. We are eager to be part of the Columbia business community and look forward to becoming an active contributor. Spirit Lake, Iowa remains our largest site and we have confidence in the team to drive fishing line and bait innovation that will continue to be the best in the world.”

According to Doerr, the former Shakespeare building will become home to Jarden Applied Materials. Pure Fishing is recruiting for additional Columbia-based roles to be filled in 2010.

Shown in the accompanying photo are Doerr (at podium) and (seated, left to right) Jarden vice chairman and CFO Ian Ashken, Jarden president and COO Jim Lillie, Jarden chairman and CEO Martin Franklin, Pure Fishing CFO Bill Horton and Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce president and CEO Ike McLeese.

Ike will auction beard 11/24/2009

As promised, Mike Iaconelli cut off his famous chin hair and will auction it this week to help raise money and awareness for autism. Ike's working with Eli Delaney on the project, and the two previously teamed for autism awareness through the Fishin' with a Mission decal campaign.

About Ike's involvement and the upcoming auction, Delaney said: "It never ceases to amaze me how he can fish at the highest level of our sport, while giving so much of his time to kids and their causes."

All proceeds for the auction will go to the New England Center for Children – a school for autism in Southborough, Mass. The school's an award-winning private, nonprofit education center dedicated to realizing human potential and creating productive lives for autistic children.

Ike noted: "More than anything, it's important to bring awareness to autism. Autism's the fastest-growing disability in the United States. A child is diagnosed with autism every 21 minutes and it now affects 1 in every 91 children in the US."

The beard has been placed in a small display case and includes Ike's signature and an official document of authenticity. The auction starts Thanksgiving Day at 9 p.m. EST. To find the auction once it goes live, visit the eBay Sports Memorabilia, Cards & Fan Shop section and search "Ike's Beard."

Further information will be posted on MikeIaconelli.com and MyLittleBuddysBoat.com, which is Delaney's autism-awareness site and home of Fishin' with a Mission.

Ethel's story 11/24/2009
Thanksgiving Day will mark the 23rd anniversary of the day when guide Mark Stevenson caught the 17.67-pound bass from Lake Fork that launched the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's ShareLunker program. The fish, nicknamed Ethel, went on to live another 8 years in captivity and was viewed by many thousands of people, and more than 1,000 reportedly showed up for her funeral in 1994.

Remitz: 'I'm in' 11/23/2009

Since the end of the Bassmaster Elite Series regular season at Oneida, a persistent rumor circulated that Derek Remitz would hang up his stick and not compete in the Bassmaster Elite Series next year. Not so, said Remitz this week. Sure he'd talked about it, mainly out of frustration after cashing just four checks, missing the Classic and having his marshal get injured at the Mississippi River, but a cooler head prevailed and he will compete.

"I already gave BASS my deposit," he told BassFan. "I was POed at the end of last year with everything going on, and losing money, and I had a lot of bad, non-fishing stuff happen, and it all just accumulated and I was probably frustrated. I'll definitely try it again. I can't give up after only a couple of years. I still have the desire and the want to do it – it's just getting harder and I'm getting worried about the money."

He added that he'll probably run with Bradley Hallman again next season, and his girlfriend might join him on tour.

Wurm moving to FLW 11/20/2009

Mike Wurm, a regular on the Bassmaster circuit since 1991 and a 10-time Classic qualifier, will forego the 2010 Bassmaster Elite Series and will instead fish the FLW Tour.

"Ranger and Evinrude are my main sponsors, and that lines up better with FLW," said the 57-year-old Arkansan. "It just fits me better right now – I really think FLW is making a conscious effort to come up with some solutions that will benefit the anglers."

He's spending the offseason playing a lot of golf and doing what he can to acquire new sponsors. Since his deal with Strike King ended this year, he has no lure-company affiliations. "I still have hope that something could develop."

He logged 16 Top-10 finishes in Bassmaster events and won the 1996 Georgia Top 100 at Lake Russell. He also fished the FLW Tour full-time for 10 consecutive seasons through 2006, making six Top-10s – including a victory at Lake Murray in 1996 – and four championship events.

He plans to compete on the PAA Tournament Series next year as well.

"The PAA really has a good thing going – it's run by fishermen for fishermen. I'm going to support them and see what develops there."

Jack Frost fluorocarbon 11/20/2009

Jay Yelas can claim one of the most remarkable resumès in the modern era or pro fishing. He qualified for 16 consecutive Bassmaster Classics then four consecutive Forrest Wood Cups. He's won the Classic and BASS Angler of the Year (AOY), as well as two FLW Tour AOY titles.

Needless to say, he takes his fishing, and his gear, seriously. And when winter sets in, he simplifies and uses pretty much one single line. What is it? Head on over to the Catch More Fish page to find out.

FLW sponsor update 11/19/2009
There could be very good news around the corner for FLW Outdoors. It appears the league is close to signing one or two new major sponsors, but everything seems to be at idle until the Genmar bankruptcy is cleared up.

Although news of the Genmar sale was expected this week, Genmar president and CEO Roger Cloutier recently told dealers to expect an announcement next week.

Popular thought in the industry is that Irwin Jacobs will retain ownership of at least Ranger Boats, if not all of Genmar. Ranger is widely regarded as the jewel in the Genmar portfolio, followed by Four Winns. However, a large part of Ranger's success is tied to FLW Outdoors. Many feel it would be hard for an outside party to realize Ranger's full potential without dual ownership of FLW Outdoors, as well as the VEC technology process that Jacobs spun off from Genmar (and is thus not part of the bankruptcy).

Again, the whole situation leaves a wide swath of pros wondering what 2010 will bring as they anxiously await news of Genmar developments.

BU update: topic list 11/19/2009

There's been a lot of excitement about the new Bass University seminar series. All the dates are set and most of the instructors have been announced, but BassFan received word this week on specific seminar topics, and the lineup is pretty impressive.

Below is an overview of what will be covered at the upcoming Philly seminar (Dec. 5–6).

Other stops include Sacramento, Calif. (Jan. 9–10), Nashville, Tenn. (Jan. 23–24) and Dallas, Texas (Feb. 6–7), each with a separate list of topics. For more information, visit TheBassUniversity.com.

Philadelphia Seminar Topics

  • Dave Mansue – Identifying seasonal patterns on tidal water and catching pre-spawn bass on rivers. Mansue will discuss the often puzzling movement of tidal bass between the seasons. Find out where to find the bass in the winter, spring, summer and fall. Mansue will also go into more detail about the tricky pre-spawn pattern for bass on rivers. He'll dissect their movement from wintering holes to staging areas to their ultimate spawning grounds.

  • Dave Wolak – Analyzing and fishing aquatic vegetation and mat-fishing strategies/techniques. Growing up in Pennsylvania, Wolak became a master of figuring out how bass live in and use vegetation. He'll go over, in exact detail, the different types of weeds and how bass position in them to feed. In Wolak's second seminar, he'll focus on the grass-fishing technique called mat-fishing. Also known as punching or plunking, mat-fishing has been one of the most successful tournament techniques on grass lakes in the last 5 years.

  • Greg Hackney – How bass relate to different forms of cover (wood, rock, vegetation, etc.) and advanced jig-fishing techniques. Hackney will explore the differences in these types of cover and reveal how bass position around these objects. Hackney will also talk about his recent win at the 2009 Forrest Wood Cup and how cover analysis played a major role. Then he'll dive into the jig – his bread-and-butter technique. He'll discuss all the fine details and exclusive jig modifications he employs.

  • Gerald Swindle – The subtleties of crankbait fishing and mastering topwater baits for all conditions. Swindle will unravel the art of crankbait fishing and explain why it's more than just a chunk-and-wind fishing technique. He'll explore different cranking methods for both shallow and deep water and reveal some top-secret cranking techniques. After that, Swindle will talk about topwaters and why they're not just for lowlight conditions. He'll examine different types of topwater plugs and where and when each type excels. Also look for Swindle to provide plenty of the funny and memorable comic relief he's so known for.

  • Pete Gluszek – In-depth smallmouth fishing strategies. In two separate classes, Gluszek will explain the one-two punch, power/finesse strategy he uses to consistently catch big smallies under a variety of conditions. He grew up fishing some of the best smallmouth fisheries in the world, and explains why smallmouth are so tricky to pattern. He'll go over all the techniques and mental decision-making strategies needed to follow their movements. He'll also specifically look at using blades and ripbaits to power-fish smallies. Then he'll examine weightless plastics, dropshots and Carolina-rigs for finesse-fishing the big brown fish.

  • Mike Iaconelli – Advanced finesse-fishing strategies and creating reaction strikes. Ike will go into detail on what do when fishing's "tough as nails." He'll cover the ins and outs of light-line finesse fishing and specifically talk about some of the hottest new finesse techniques around today, including the flick-shake, shakey-head, tail-weighted french fry and the wet-noodle rig. In his second class, Ike will switch gears and talk about how to trigger reaction strikes from inactive bass. He'll specifically cover the two baits and techniques that have helped him rack up over $200,000 in tournament winnings over the last few years.

    Yammy's 'Game Changers' 11/18/2009

Earlier this week, Yamaha introduced a new suite of bass engines that are pretty mind-blowing. In short, the new VMax SHOs are 4-strokes that outperform 2-strokes. And they weigh less than 2-strokes too.

BassFan editor-in-chief Jon Storm just returned from Yamaha's test facility in Bridgeport, Ala., where he tested the new engines. For his thoughts and "game-changing" technology, click here for his BassFan Product Review.

Naslund back at WON Bass 11/18/2009
Saying he wants to get back to the basics of growing the sport of tournament bass fishing, Harvey Naslund has agreed to once more take the reins of the WON Bass circuit, Western Outdoors president and CEO Bob Twilegar announced. Naslund replaces Bill Hutcheson, who resigned last month to accept a position with the new California Sportsman publication.

This will be the third time Naslund has been in charge of the top bass fishing tournament organization in the West, and he admits the challenges have never been greater. He says the answer to those challenges is to increase participation in the sport at a grassroots level.

“We’re going to support bass fishing from the bass club level on up with everything from first-timer certificates to the exposure offered by Western Outdoor News, wonews.com, wonbass.com and our WON Bass publication,” he said. “There are a lot of options out there and we want to make it easy and fun to fish a WON Bass event.”

Naslund first ran a bass circuit in 1974, when Western Outdoors Publications bought Western Bass. He stayed on until the circuit was sold in 1982, then returned in 1987 with the debut of WON Bass.

“Our first event we had 224 pros at Clear Lake,” he recalled. Under his direction, WON Bass revived tournament bass fishing on the West Coast and in the process resurrected the U.S. Open on Lake Mead.

Naslund retired as director in 1995, but kept his connection to bass fishing by competing in the U.S. Open and team tournaments with friends like longtime Southern California pro Dave Nollar.

“The outdoors field and fishing has always been a big part of my life. Here’s hoping the third time’s the charm.”

    More FLW news 11/18/2009
FLW Outdoors released two news items today. One: US Bank will continue as the official bank of FLW Outdoors for a 7th consecutive year. Terms of the sponsorship deal were not disclosed.

Additionally, Walleye Tour anglers will have an opportunity to buy up into an optional payout pool next year to increase the overall purse. The optional payout would offer an additional $17,000 to the winning pro and an additional $3,000 to the winning co-angler (based on 150 pros and 150 co-anglers participating) and would pay through 30th place. The fee for participation in the optional payout is $400 for pros and $100 for co-anglers.

A side note: Many are waiting to hear Yamaha's plans for next year. Previously, Yamaha and Evinrude both sponsored FLW Outdoors. The league on Monday announced that it settled its lawsuit with Evinrude out of court, and 'Rude would continue as a sponsor under a multiyear agreements.

However, Yamaha at this point has not committed to a renewed sponsorship, and when it recently detailed marketing plans for its new series of VMax SHO 4-strokes, only BASS was mentioned

Yamaha Marine Group marketing-division manager Dale Barnes told BassFan yesterday that the company is in a "holding pattern" until the sale of Genmar is completed, at which time any questions surrounding the future ownership of Ranger Boats will be settled.

    FLW, Evinrude mend fence 11/17/2009

FLW Outdoors announced that Evinrude will continue as a sponsor under a multiyear agreement. The news surprised many, as FLW Outdoors sued Evinrude earlier this year for non-payment of sponsor fees. A news release about the sponsorship said that suit was settled out of court.

    Key seeks big sponsor 11/16/2009

Gary Key has wanted to fish as a tour pro since he was 8 years old. But now that he's actually qualified to compete on the 2010 Bassmaster Elite Series, he's not sure if he'll be able to accept the invitation.

Much has changed both in pro fishing and in his personal life since he first started to pursue a pro career in 1990 by moving from Southern California to Texas. The Elite Series requires a major bankroll to cover the entry fees and expenses, and he'll need to acquire a major sponsor to make it work.

There are also family considerations – he has six children age 11 and under and No. 7 is due in 2 weeks. If he does end up fishing at the tour level, his family would travel with him.

"I'm going to need some divine intervention or to have some big doors open for me," said the 39-year-old who now lives in Arizona, where he works as a manager for a telecommunications company. "Right now I'm trying really hard to find sponsorship. I'm working on a proposal and I've got some leads, but that really doesn't amount to much until somebody writes a check.

"If I don't get out there next year, it won't be from lack of desire. My wife wants it as bad as I do, but it has to work for the whole family."

He qualified for the Elites via his 6th-place showing this year in the Central Open points. He logged finishes of 26th at Toledo Bend, 10th at Rayburn and 20th at the Atchafalaya Basin.

He said he would've already made his first deposit for the Elite Series were he allowed to roll it over to the Opens if he were unable to come up with the remainder of the funds. Elite Series deposits, though, are non-transferable and non-refundable.

"I'm going to fish the Opens again. If I don't get to fish the Elites, then I'll just keep trying to requalify until all the pieces fall together."

Creditors object to FLW motion 11/13/2009
Early this week, FLW Outdoors filed a motion with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court asking for expedited relief from stay in the Genmar bankruptcy proceedings, in order to take possession of 42 Evinrude and four Yamaha motors currently in the hands of Ranger and Stratos. Judge Dennis O'Brien granted FLW Outdoors the expedited relief it sought and gave permission for FLW Outdoors to take possession of the motors.

However, the committee of unsecured creditors today filed an objection to that motion, and stated in court documents that in "the short time" the committee has had to respond to the motion, it "has not been able to learn all the facts necessary to respond to this motion," and furthermore believes strongly that "FLW does not have a perfected interest in the engines."

Because the motion was already granted, it would seem unlikely the committee's late objection could overturn it. That would make the objection more of a positional statement regarding former Genmar chairman Irwin Jacobs.

The details of the original motion are confusing. However, the motion was filed on the same day that FLW Outdoors chairman Jacobs stepped down as chairman of Genmar. Some sources within the industry felt the motion was a strategic move by Jacobs to ensure he retained possession of the motors while Ranger and Stratos operated under the directorship of the court and the chief restructuring officer, although that theory wouldn't fully explain FLW's statement to the court that "upon information and belief, Ranger and/or Stratos has purported to sell or may attempt to sell one or more of the FLW engines in direct violation of their prior agreement with FLW Outdoors."

If you're a fan of both professional bass fishing and college football, you might've noted the facial resemblance between former Bassmaster Classic and Forrest Wood Cup champion Luke Clausen and Notre Dame star quarterback Jimmy Clausen (far right photo, click box for an expanded view). Amazingly, they're not related.

Luke said he's never been asked if he were related to Jimmy, but he's spent a lot of time hanging around Nashville, Tenn. in recent years and was frequently questioned as to whether he were related to former Tennessee Volunteers QB Casey Clausen. That's Jimmy's older brother.

The football-playing Clausens grew up in Southern California, whereas Luke is a native of Washington state. Hard to believe they're not blood kin, isn't it?

"The sad part is that he's probably never been asked if he was related to me," Luke said.

    Burgess inks Open sponsor 11/13/2009

Bassmaster Elite Series pro Mark Burgess signed an interesting deal this week for his 2010 Bassmaster Northern Open campaign. The Massachusetts pro will promote the Storage Max company at his three Northern Open stops.

"Storage Max is local to my home with three locations – in Franklin and Worcester, Ma. and Londonderry, N.H.," Burgess said. "They have both indoor climate-controlled and outdoor storage facilities with maximum security and the lowest prices. They also sell supplies for moving and storing. This is a very competitive business in this market, and Storage Max has proven to be the best. I'm very excited about this opportunity to work with a company as successful as Storage Max."

    Crochet will step up 11/12/2009

Cliff Crochet, the runner-up in the Bassmaster Central Opens Angler of the Year race, said he will move up to the Bassmaster Elite Series for 2010.

"I paid my first deposit (Wednesday) morning," said the 26-year-old Assumption Parish deputy sheriff who lives in Pierre Part, La. "This is a dream come true – I've been working for this for a long time and fishing in the Bassmaster Classic has been a goal since I watched Mark Davis win it on TNN in 1995."

He thinks he'll be able to work the circuit around his job through the judicious use of vacation days and other accrued time off.

"I haven't talked to my boss yet, but he's been real supportive of my fishing. I assume we'll be able to work out some kind of schedule."

His sponsor lineup includes Skeeter/Yamaha and Power-Pole, and he hopes to sign others during the next couple of months.

His Open finishes got better as the season progressed – he was 22nd at Toledo Bend, 7th at Rayburn and 3rd at the Atchafalaya Basin.

"I'm very thankful for the position I'm in and the opportunity I have, and I look forward to representing the great state of Louisiana."

U.S. team wins in Mexico 11/11/2009

Tom Mann Jr. and Todd Faircloth paced the six-angler United States team to victory at the 5th annual World Black Bass Sport Fishing Championship, held last weekend at Lake Cuchillo near Monterrey, Mexico.

Mann and Faircloth fished together throughout the event and weighed a 33-pound sack on day 3 that included 8-, 9- and 10-pounders. Their performance propelled the U.S. to the country-level title (click the photo to see a larger vision) and also gave them the two-man team championship.

"This was a whole different kind of event for me," said Mann. "I've fished professionally for bass for 20 years. I've qualified for eight Bassmaster Classics, I've qualified for 7 FLW Championships, and I have won on both tours. But as far as the pride I felt standing on the podium at the closing ceremonies in Mexico, it far outweighed any of that."

The U.S. team was hand-picked by Gary Yamamoto. In addition to Mann and Faircloth, it also consisted of Yamamoto and his son Derek, along with Charlie Weyer and Mark Lassagne.

The Mexican team was the runner-up, followed by Spain, Italy, Portugal, Swaziland, Russia, Venezuela, Germany and Romania. An angler from Swaziland caught the tournament's biggest fish – a 13-pound monster.

Mann and Faircloth caught most of their fish on a 12-inch Yamamoto Curly Tail worm. The rest came on deep-diving Rapala crankbaits – DT16s and DT20s.

    Thank you veterans 11/11/2009

Although there seems to be a lot currently happening in the sport, truth is, it all matters very little, because right now there are people in harm's way defending our right to even wet a line.

Today is Veterans Day – the one day each year when we take some extra time to think about the sacrifices so many have made, and seek out veterans whom we know, or don't know, to give them a special thanks.

Here's a very sincere thanks for all veterans from the BassFan staff. Your service was not, and is not, in vain.

    Another ally gone 11/10/2009

Brunswick Corp. recenty announced Dirk Hyde as the new president of Lund Boats. Hyde was most recently president of Brunswick's pontoon-boat category, and he replaces Andrew Klopak, whom the company said left "to pursue
other career aspirations." However, sources close to the story believe Klopak was let go by Brunswick after a continuous decline in boat sales.

What's particularly noteworthy about the change is Klopak was known as a heavy supporter of tournament fishing who worked to underwrite both walleye and bass tournaments (many bass anglers run deep-Vs in northern climes). And although Lund's presence in the tournament scene has weakened under the current market climate, Klopak remained committed to tournament and pro sponsorships, including grassroots competitions.

DaRosa and 'Old Red' win! 11/10/2009

Another reader has been awarded a brand new Abu Garcia reel!

Jim DaRosa of Isle, Ill. was chosen as the October winner of the Abu Garcia For Life! contest, hosted by BassFan in the Catch More Fish section.

DaRosa wrote lovingly of the red Ambassadeur 5000 he purchased in 1968 with student-loan money. It gave him a "reel" education, he said, and he's been an Abu Garcia man ever since.

For his prize, DaRosa may choose between a brand new Abu Garcia Sorön SX spinning reel or Revo SX casting reel.

When BassFan contacted DaRosa with the news, he was sitting in a duck blind in Missouri.

"The contest brought back some memories," he told BassFan. "As I said in the story, that $29 investment I bought with a student loan started my downfall into bass fishing. College students usually went to Ft. Lauderdale for spring break, but I went to Toledo Bend or any other place that was real hot.

"That's the reel that got me going – that old, red 5000," he added. "And I've been an avid Abu Garcia guy ever since. I don't know how many I've owned – I own three Revos right now – but that old one is one of my most prized possessions. I've got it in my rec room where it's prominently displayed. It just tells a story, and when I look at that reel I remember some of the experiences I had with it through the years."

To read DaRosa's winning entry, as well as other fabulous stories about and pictures of old Abu Garcia reels, visit the Abu Garcia For Life! contest page.

And remember, you too could win a brand new reel. All it takes is a few minutes to enter.

Does your Abu Garcia reel have some mileage? Then why not enter it in the Abu Garcia For Life! contest? Show us your "classic" or well-used Abu and you might win a new one. Click here to submit a picture of the reel, as well as a detailed story or two about its history. Entries must include a photo of the reel and are judged each month based on content, detail and theme.

Rapala named as FLW sponsor 11/10/2009

Long-rumored news was confirmed today when FLW Outdoors announced Rapala as an official sponsor. Rapala will receive exposure through the many FLW Outdoors media platforms, and Rapala will supply the league with product to distribute at various tournaments.

Rapala USA president Tom Mackin said in announcing the news: "Over the years, Rapala pro-staffers have had a lot of success and numerous tournament victories using our lures in FLW Outdoors events. For 2010, Rapala is proud to take it up a few notches as an official sponsor of FLW Outdoors. We consider FLW Outdoors to be a giant marketing machine that will further build the reputation of the legendary Rapala brand and provide a venue for the launch of our new Trigger X softbaits."

Trigger X represents Rapala's aggressive move into the softbait market. The new-age plastics include a pheromone-based stimulant.

FLW Tour pros who fish for the Rapala team include Larry Nixon, David Fritts and Dave Lefebre, among others. Fritts, in particular, has cashed heavily in FLW Outdoors tournaments with Rapala products, most recently with the DT Series of crankbaits.

Terms of the sponsorship deal were not disclosed, although Rapala (Normark) is listed as a creditor in the Genmar bankruptcy, owed $87,390. As previously reported on BassFan, the sponsorship deal is believed to be, in large part, a tradeout against that debt.

    State agencies most trusted 11/9/2009

In an October 2009 survey, Southwick Associates asked anglers and hunters which type of organization they trust the most for accurate information regarding fish and wildlife conservation. The results of the monthly AnglerSurvey.com and HunterSurvey.com poll show that state fish and wildlife agencies are considered the most trustworthy source of conservation information among hunters and anglers.

Of the 2,771 anglers surveyed, 54.4 percent reported state fish and wildlife agencies were their most trusted source. Of the 3,378 hunters surveyed, 50.7 percent agreed. The second-most trusted source, with 25.1 percent of anglers and 29.5 percent of hunters, was sport-fishing and hunting non-profit conservation groups.

Non-profit conservation groups not focused toward fishing or hunting were preferred by 5.3 percent of anglers and 7.4 percent of hunters. Federal fish and wildlife agencies were rated as the most trusted source by 5.0 percent of anglers and 4.3 percent of hunters. Non-outdoor television programming and magazines ranked even lower.

”The results indicate that sportsmen and women want to hear from their state fish and wildlife agency when it comes to fish and wildlife conservation issues,” said Southwick's Donna Leonard. “Efforts to increase conservation awareness or behavior will have better success if state fish and wildlife agencies are involved.”

Launched in 2006, AnglerSurvey.com and HunterSurvey.com help the outdoor equipment industry, government fisheries and wildlife officials and conservation organizations track consumer activities and expenditure trends.

    Tucker thankful 11/9/2009

Mark Tucker wants to extend a gesture of thanks to fellow Bassmaster Elite Series angler James Niggemeyer for winning the Bassmaster Central Opens points title over the weekend, but he hasn't figured out the best way to go about it.

Niggemeyer's 10th-place finish in the circuit finale at Louisiana's Atchafalaya Basin secured the points crown and one of the circuit's two Bassmaster Classic berths. But since Niggemeyer had previously qualified for the Classic via the 2009 Elite points, that Classic slot will go to Tucker, who was next in line on the Elite list.

"I was really impressed with James for pushing the issue," the Missouri veteran said. "He could've just laid back and let things happen, but he didn't."

Tucker was fishing an event at Lake of the Ozarks over the weekend, but his mind would occasionally wander toward Louisiana. "Every now and then I'd catch myself thinking, 'I really hope James is catching them.' It was really a relief because I'd worked so hard all year, and it would've been almost like working for free if I didn't make it."

The 2010 Classic is set for Feb. 19-21 at Alabama's Lay Lake.

"The main thing is I've got one shot at $500,000 and I plan to go down there and try to make the most of it."

    Rose maintains Stren edge 11/6/2009

Mark Rose caught a 15-06 sack today and remained in the lead at the Stren Series Championship at Alabama's Pickwick Lake with a 2-day total of 37-11 as the field was cut to the Top 10 for the final day.

Following a fog delay, he made a run of more than 80 miles to tiny Bay Springs Lake. “I went all the way to the other end,” he said. "I told everybody I was going as far as you could go.”

A local tournament will launch at Bay Springs Lake tomorrow, and Rose said that could affect his chances to pull of the wire-to-wire victory.

“I’ve showed them how and where to catch them. But that’s tournament bass fishing. When you’re dealing with big fields and good fisheries like this, that’s one of the things professional fishermen have to deal with. I have to deal with it the best I can and stay positive.”

Here are the 10 anglers who'll fish tomorrow:

    1. Mark Rose: 37-11
    2. Jonathan Newton: 35-07
    3. Keith Pace: 32-03
    4. Lloyd Pickett Jr.: 31-13
    5. Ott DeFoe: 31-05
    6. Dave Lefebre: 30-11
    7. Scott Canterbury: 30-06
    8. Robert Robinson: 28-03

    Smith boosts Open lead 11/6/2009

Louisiana's Mark Smith caught an 11-11 bag today and extended his lead at the Atchafalaya Basin Bassmaster Central Open to 3 1/2 pounds with a 2-day total of 26-01. Fishing was more difficult on day 2, with just 17 of the 126 anglers weighing a limit.

“I caught two limits of keepers yesterday, and today I just caught five fish,” said Smith. “It was a very, very peculiar bite today. I think possibly it’s the high pressure.”

Louisiana’s Cliff Crochet, who lives just minutes from the boat landing, moved into 2nd place Friday with a two-day total of 22-09. Crochet weighed 12-14 limit.

At stake for the Central Open pros are two Bassmaster Classic berths and seven Bassmaster Elite Series invitations based on points standings, as well as a top prize of $45,000 (based on a full field). Only the Top 30 after today's weigh-in advanced to tomorrow's final day.

Here's how the Top 10 stacks up:

    1. Mark Smith: 26-01
    2. Cliff Crochet: 22-09
    3. Dale Jackson: 21-06

    Smith takes Open lead 11/6/2009

Louisiana's Mark Smith caught a 14-06 bag from the muddy waters of the Atchafalaya Basin to take the early lead in the third and final Bassmaster Central Open out of Morgan City, La. He has an 11-ounce lead over Texan James Biggs.

Smith caught all of his fish pitching to flooded cypress trees in about 2 feet of water. He said he culled three times from the best of four areas he identified during practice.

“There were other anglers in two of my areas, so I went to my best area and fished it exclusively,” he said.

The race for the Central's two Bassmaster Classic berths could be headed for a shakeup. Points leader Todd Castledine weighed just three fish for 5-02 and is in 54th place. James Niggemeyer, 2nd in the points, caught a 6-05 bag and is in 43rd.

Niggemeyer has already earned a Classic spot through the Bassmaster Elite Series points.

Here's a look at the current Top 10:

    1. Mark Smith: 14-06
    2. James Biggs: 13-11

    Genmar: motion granted 11/5/2009
The U.S. Bankruptcy Court of Minnesota today granted Genmar its motion to enter into a period of exclusivity with a potential stalking horse for sale of the company's assets.

Identity of the stalking horse has not been disclosed, but given what Genmar chairman Irwin Jacobs told media over the previous 2 days – that he'll own Genmar by week's end – there's every reason to believe he or a close associate is indeed the stalking horse.

What the period of exclusivity means is that from this point forward, until the period ends, Genmar may only negotiate a sale with the stalking horse. However, if it turns out the stalking horse is not Jacobs, the motion does include language that allows Jacobs to match or better the stalking-horse bid.

Still unclear is whether the stalking horse would purchase Genmar in whole or in part.

And the court order made no mention of Textron's objection, which sought more transparency in the proceedings, so the objection assumingly was overruled.

Genmar is a public company and Jacobs currently owns 40% of its stock. He's able to purchase the company out of bankruptcy as a private citizen.

    Santone signs Herren 11/5/2009

"I'm very excited to have the opportunity to work with Santone Lures," said Herren. Pure, Dyneema sign agreement 11/5/2009
A lot of BassFans may wonder about the differences between fishing-line materials. It's all pretty easy to understand, especially the Dyneema end.

In a nutshell, Dyneema (an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene) was invented in 1979 by Netherlands-based DSM Dyneema. It's a very tough material, with the highest impact strength of any thermoplastic presently made. DSM began production in 1990 in its home country then opened a plant in Greenville, N.C. (Honeywell later developed Spectra which in most regards is similar to Dyneema).

Dyneema is gel-spun to create oriented-strand synthetic fibers. That's why the line lays so nice and limp when fishing.

Dyneema is the material used by Pure Fishing to produce such lines as Stren Microfuse and Berkley FireLine.

Why is all this important? For one, it helps your fishing. But also, Pure Fishing and DSM Dyneema today announced the signing of a new global strategic agreement that the two companies said "will strengthen and increase their joint commitment to the research and development, marketing and sales of high-performance fishing lines made with Dyneema."

In announcing the agreement, Pure Fishing senior product manager Clay Norris said: "We work hard to provide our customers with products they can trust. Our customers can expect from us best-in-class superline products designed to incorporate the abrasion resistance, outstanding line sensitivity and most importantly unmatched strength provided by Dyneema. This is why we believe DSM Dyneema is an ideal partner with a proven performance track record for us to team with. Put simply, the world's best fishing lines deserve Dyneema, the world's strongest fiber."

DSM global sports marketing manager Marcel Alberts said: "Continuous product innovation and strategic collaboration with partners who are leaders in their field are two of the core pillars of our business model. We're really pleased in joining forces with Pure Fishing and are confident it'll lead to even higher performing fishing lines that'll continue to delight the more discerning angler who demands more from his equipment."

    Stren Championship kicks off 11/5/2009
The Stren Championship kicked off this morning at Pickwick out of Florence, Ala. A nearly full field of 188 boats blasted off for a chance at not only the significant payout, but also a berth in the Forrest Wood Cup. Under the Stren Championship format, the top pro and co from each of the five Stren divisions, based on finish at the Championship, gets a 2010 Cup berth. Mike Iaconelli and Stacey King, for example, fished this year's Cup via a Stren berth.

The championship field this year is nearly all traditional FLW Tour/Series/Stren pros, with the exception of Bassmaster Elite Series pro Charlie Hartley.

Also note that Californian Mike Folkestad is in the field. Folkestad qualified for the Stren Championship each year since 2003, but the last one he fished was in 2005. Folkestad doesn't have to sweat a Cup berth this week though, as he's already in via his 14th-place finish in the Western FLW Series.

    Robby Rose update 11/3/2009
According to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game warden Gary Collins, the investigation involving Robby Rose and an alleged cheating incident last week at the Bud Light Trail Big Bass Tournament is still under investigation. Game wardens did meet with the Rockwall County district attorney's office on Friday, and received guidance on what further evidence to collect before filing a case. Collins noted that wardens were still conducting interviews and gathering statements this week.

Expect further updates as events move forward.

    Genmar: Jacobs reveals plans 11/3/2009
BYM news published a brief, but interesting interview with Genmar chairman Irwin Jacobs today, who tells the international boating-sailing news service that it's his "plan to be the acquirer of all the (Genmar) assets. I'm in the process of doing that right now. I can't speak other than what I believe, but I think you'll see before the week is out, I plan to be the high bid – that's my plan."

    Genmar: Textron seeks transparency 11/3/2009
Two developments in the Genmar situation today. One, the Committee of Unsecured Creditors released a statement "generally to support a process that will result in the sale of the Genmar assets, to either one or multiple buyers."

Also today, Textron Financial Corporation (TFC), believed to be the largest unsecured creditor in the bankruptcy, filed a limited objection that seeks more transparency in the sale process.

There's a sense among many that Genmar chairman Irwin Jacobs, or an associate of Jacobs, is the unidentified potential stalking horse.

    Textron's objection read, in part:

"With scant justification offered, the Debtors (Genmar) seek to avoid a fundamental tenet of bankruptcy proceedings, namely transparency. Instead, the Debtors propose to envelop their sale process in a shroud of secrecy, such that this court and interested parties – TFC included – are to be deprived of even the most basic information, including, without limitation:

  • The identity of the potential stalking horse;

  • The extent of the potential stalking horse's interest in the Debtors' businesses or assets;

  • The range of values being proposed by the potential stalking horse;

  • The relationship between any proposed purchase price and the proposed bid enhancement (i.e., expense reimbursement); and

  • The nature and extent of any additional bid protections to be awarded to the potential stalking horse."

A hearing on the objection, as well as Genmar's motion to sell assets, is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. tomorrow morning (Wednesday).

More TV time for collegians 11/3/2009

The Association of College Anglers (ACA) has announced its 2010 tournament season has now grown to five televised events. The schedule includes the 5th annual BoatU.S. Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship, which returns to Texas’ Lake Lewisville May 24-28, 2010.

“Four years ago when we started supporting the championship, there were about 40 schools with organized clubs and no sanctioning body,” said BoatU.S. angler director Mike Pellerin. “Once this sport started gaining critical television coverage, its popularity has soared. Today, there are over 200 clubs, with the ACA leading the effort to grow bass fishing at the collegiate level.”

The ACA was formed through an affiliation with the BoatU.S. Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship and other sponsors. The organization has been made possible by a joint effort among The Bass Federation Inc. (TBF), Careco Multimedia and a host of supporting companies. The ACA is a "federation" under the TBF umbrella, with its own board of directors, by-laws, and benefits.

The new ACA schedule consists of the following events. TV coverage will be produced by Careco Multimedia and will air on the Versus network next year (check local listings):

    > Stephen F. Austin State University Bucketmouth Bass Tournament, Dec. 18-19, Sam Rayburn Lake, Texas.

    > Arkansas Tech University Invitational, March 25-26, Lake Dardanelle, Ark.

    > Southern Collegiate Bass Fishing Series Championship, April 2-3, Wheeler Lake, Ala.

    > 5th annual BoatU.S. Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship, May 24-28, Lake Lewisville, Texas

    > Collegiate Bass Fishing Open, June 21-25, Kentucky Lake, Tenn.

The ACA also sanctions additional non-televised collegiate bass fishing tournaments. For more information on events or to find out how to start a club or join the ACA, click here.

    Monroe: Eastern Series out 11/2/2009

Ish Monroe's original plan for 2010 was to fish a full schedule on both the Bassmaster Elite Series and FLW Tour, plus as many of the FLW Series events as possible in both the Eastern and Western divisions. In light of the most recent announcements from FLW Outdoors, the Californian has dropped the Eastern Series from his calendar.

"Yeah, they lowered the (entry) fees, but they lowered the payback, too," he said. "I'm fishing to win money, and now you're making ($2,000) instead of $6,000 just cashing checks, and now the Eufaula event conflicts (with the Elite Series event at the Delta). It just doesn't seem feasible for me."

He doesn't think he'll have much difficulty securing a spot on the FLW Tour because of his sponsor affiliations – he's aligned with Ranger, Yamaha and Lowrance, all of which are FLW backers.

"I put it out there to all my sponsors that are associated with FLW that any reasonable opportunity I have to fish with them, I plan to take it."

He said he'd still fish the FLW Tour opener at the Red River in Louisiana this year even if he'd qualified for the 2010 Bassmaster Classic (he'll sit out that event for the first time since 2004). The official practice period for the Classic at Alabama's Lay Lake overlaps with that tournament.

"I'd miss some Classic practice to fish the Tour event, especially at a place like Lay where I've been before and I have a pretty good idea of what goes on at that time of year. It might be different if it was a place I hadn't fished before, but since I didn't make the Classic, that's a moot point for this year."

He also announced that the Snag Proof Ish's Phat Frog, which he used en route to victory at the Western Series event at the California Delta in June, was due to hit stores today.
