Stan Sloan dies (updated)

Vicki Bender at Ray Scott Outdoors passed along the sad news that Stan Sloan, winner of the inaugural BASS tournament in 1967, died early this morning.

Sloan beat out fellow Tennessean Bill Dance to win the All-American Invitational at Arkansas' Beaver Lake. He competed in 28 other BASS events over the next 12 years and compiled nine Top-10 finishes, but never won again. He fished five Bassmaster Classics, with a top finish of 7th in 1972.

His final BASS tournament was the 25th anniversary celebration of the inaugural event, which was held at Beaver in 1992.

Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Marshall-Donnelly and Combs Funeral Home (201 25th Ave., Nashville, TN 37203). The phone number at the funeral home is (615) 327-1111.
