New Ga. facilities 12/28/2007
Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue today announced the location for the Go Fish Georgia Center and Hatchery and the 10 sites on which "mega-ramps" will be built to accommodate large-scale tournaments. Both projects are part of the $19 million Go Fish Georgia program unveiled by Perdue at the beginning of this year.
The Go Fish Georgia Center will be built on 120 acres located on the south side of the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter in Perry. The facility will include a visitor center that will market and promote fishing opportunities throughout the state, an on-site public fishing lake and a fully functioning warmwater hatchery.
Lake Hartwell, which sits on the state's border with South Carolina and will host the 2008 Bassmaster Classic, will receive two of the mega-ramps. Lanier, Clarks Hill and Seminole are among the other sites where mega-ramps will be built.
The announcements today are exactly what I envisioned when I proposed the Go Fish Georgia program state and local governments joining with private donations, all contributing to growing our state as a destination for recreational and tournament fishing, Perdue said.
The site for the visitors center and hatchery was selected after an independent review of
more than a dozen potential locations using criteria developed by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Economic Development. In addition, the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter supports the use of this property for the facility and the Houston County Development Authority, Houston County, Perry Area Chamber of Commerce and the City of Perry are contributing $2.5 million to the construction costs.
Eight of the 10 mega-ramp sites announced today will receive Go Fish Georgia funds to match local financial and in-kind contributions for construction. The two Hartwell sites will be built using funds from the PCB contamination settlement stemming from chemical releases upstream by a South Carolina plant that eventually flowed down into the lake.
The announced sites were:
> Laurel Park - Hall County on Lake Lanier
> Wildwood Park - Columbia County on Clarks Hill Lake
> Richard B. Russell State Park - Elbert County on Lake Richard B. Russell
> Pyne Road Park - Troup County on West Point Lake
> Veterans Memorial State Park - Crisp County/Cordele on Lake Blackshear
> Earle May Boat Basin Park City of Bainbridge on Lake Seminole
> Jaycee Landing - Wayne County and City of Jesup on the Altamaha River
> Robert Baurle Ramp Augusta/Richmond County on the Savannah River
> Gum Branch Access - Hart County and the City of Hartwell on Lake Hartwell
> Tugaloo State Park - Franklin County, Stephens County and the City of Lavonia
on Lake Hartwell.

Four go 4-stroke 12/28/2007
Yamaha announced today that four of its pros will run 4-strokes next season: Randy Blaukat, Mark Davis, Shinichi Fukae, and Scott Suggs. Three of the four are FLW Tour pros, while Davis will fish the Bassmaster Elite Series.
Yamaha product information manager David Meeler noted: "Two-stroke models have traditionally been the outboard of choice in the bass realm, primarily because of their power-to-weight ratio and power curve. Yamaha's F225 'Sport Model' is powerful enough to break the 2-stroke tradition."
Suggs said of the change: "Yamaha's built an exceptional brand on reliability and performance - a combination you just can't beat on the water. I've personally been running a Yamaha on the back of my boat for years. The quiet power of the 225 'Sport Model' is second to none, and I look forward to getting it on the water in 2008."

Skeet's 'bass' guitar 12/28/2007
Sure, there are plenty of bass guitars out there (as in clef), but how many "bass" bass guitars have you seen (as in the fish)? Here's a look at a gift Skeet Reese received this Christmas. It's a six-string bass from Duane Calkins, a woodshop teacher and avid bass angler who teaches near Reese's home in California. The guitar was made in honor of Reese's 2007 BASS Angler of the Year (AOY) title, but it also highlights a cool program that BassFans might want to know about.
Reese said: "After winning the AOY title, I received a phone call from Duane. He asked if I'd like to have a custom guitar. Of course I said yes, not having any idea what he had in mind. About a month later Duane shows up to the house with the coolest bass guitar I'd ever seen."
Reese added: "I thought the guitar was cool, but when (my wife) Kim and I sat down and started talking to Duane about his woodshop class, we realized that his program was even cooler. Several years ago Duane got bored of building coat racks, key racks and all that other stuff that we built in woodshop 20 years ago. So he decided to do something different build a guitar. Little did (he) know that the one guitar would turn into a whole class, then to two, and eventually into WoodShopRocks.com.
Especially notable is how, according to Reese, the Woodshop Rocks program has helped hundreds of kids, including troubled kids, and that Calkins donates a lot of his own time for the kids. "He's given some of them a passion to move forward in the music industry and has given some of the children something to bring families back together," Reese said. "Being a professional fisherman, I totally understand passion. If it wasn't for the passion of fishing, I'd have gone down that wrong path. So it doesn't matter what it is that you have a passion for I think it helps you through life."
Reese also said that it's Calkins' goal to spread the program, and he wants to help other teachers learn the art. Any BassFans interested in writing Calkins for more information can click here to send him an email.

Grigsby: The bad and good 12/24/2007
Shaw Grigsby's look at this year's season includes some positives and negatives. One negative was certainly the western swing, where he finished near the bottom in both events. That certainly cost him a Bassmaster Classic berth. He did battle back into contention, only to slide out of qualification again near the end and finish 47th in the Elite Series points.
"It never should have been that close anyway," he said about missing the Classic. "I had way too many opportunities to be up there. The last few tournaments, I was in the money strong, then just fell out. I just did some stupid turns. But I'm looking forward to '08."
Despite missing the Classic, there's one giant positive to the year, and that's his health. He had back-to-back heart and gall-bladder surgeries in the summer of 2004. "My health is 100%, and that's pretty much the good part," he said. "Everything's great in that aspect. And I'm fired up about next year. I like the idea of the first two tournaments being in Florida, then the next two on some of the best big-bass waters in Texas. They're going to be spectacular. I think the first part of the season is going to be real special."
In terms of an off-season, he doesn't get much. He spent a few days hunting with his son, went back on the road, then finally was able to enjoy a week or so before Christmas with the family. Pretty quickly after Christmas, he'll be back on the seminar circuit, and his filming schedule for One More Cast is always grueling.

It begins again 12/24/2007
It's hard to believe, but we're just 2 weeks away from the official start of the 2008 tournament season. The Shasta Western Stren and Falcon Texas Stren kick off on Jan. 9, and the St. Johns Bassmaster Southern Open launches the following week.
Remember that the St. Johns event was originally scheduled for a week later, and was slated for Okeechobee, but BASS moved the event after FLW Outdoors announced its Series schedule with a Big 'O' stop that coincided with BASS's visit.

Fish of a Lifetime update 12/18/2007
The first year of the Abu Garcia Fish of a Lifetime contest is coming to a close, but it's not over yet! One lucky BassFan can still win a new Abu Garcia reel but you gotta get to typin' before the year expires.
In fact, the stories your compadres have been sending in are so good that they've been making it tough for the Abu Garcia folks to decide on winners.
"The Fish and Limit of a Lifetime stories in November were really good, and made the selection of only one winner very difficult," said Abu Garcia marketing manager Andrew Marks. "Jim Harrell's tale of his 16.12-pound lunker on Lake Fork was the winner, but the Littlejohns were a really close 2nd.
"Jim will get an Abu Garcia Record 50 reel to complement his 31-year-old Ambassadeur 5000A, along with an Abu hat. Andy and Micah Littlejohn will get a VIP certificate for 50% off any three products, along with some hats.
"All of us at Abu Garcia hope you and your family have a great holiday season and a happy new year. I'd also like to thank everyone for using Abu Garcia reels so you're sure you're ready for that Fish of a Lifetime.
"If you haven't tried our Revo reels, then you're missing out on the hottest-selling low-profile baitcasting reel on the market and the people buying them are serious fishermen, like all BassFans are."
He encouraged anglers to "grab that camera and write your tale about your Fish of a Lifetime. There's still time to get your story in for December, with the opportunity to win a new Abu Garcia reel."
Click here to learn how to send in your Abu Garcia story, and to see the Fish of a Lifetime stories sent in this year. And remember: Your fish of a lifetime doesn't have to be a bass, and can also be a tourney limit of a lifetime.

Vida the voyageur 12/18/2007
BassFans have heard a lot about the hunting exploits of pros this off-season, but the stories typically involve either antlers or wings. Michigan FLW Tour pro Kevin Vida does a lot of that, but he's a serious trapper too, and he's been hard at work on his lines this off-season.
"I trap everything coon, muskrat, fox, coyote," he said. "Usually we have a buyer out of Illinois we sell to, or we ship them to Canada."
He doesn't use any of the pelts or tails for lure-tying. "If you want to do that you, go get a squirrel," he noted. "Squirrels are still a pretty good market not just the tails, but the whole pelt."
Amidst all that, he somehow still finds time to coach football and basketball in the off-season too.

Toyota offers bonuses 12/17/2007
Boat-based contingency award programs have been around seemingly forever. In 2008, Toyota will offer the first truck-based program, with cash prizes available to anglers competing in the Bassmaster Classic all the way down to the 92 Bassmaster Weekend Series regular-season events.
The program, called Toyota Trucks Bonus Bucks, hasn't been officially announced yet (official rules and registration forms should be available in a few weeks), but some of its specifics have trickled out. To win a contingency award, an angler must be the registered owner or lessee of a 2007 or newer Toyota Tundra or Sequoia and must have registered for the program prior to fishing a contingency-paying Bassmaster Tournament Trail event.
The payout schedule is as follows:
> Bassmaster Classic (one event) $7,500 to the highest-placing eligible entrant; $2,500 to the 2nd-highest placing eligible entrant.
> Bassmaster Elite Series (11 events) $3,000 to the highest-placing eligible entrant; $2,000 to the 2nd-highest-placing eligible entrant.
> Bassmaster Opens (six events) $1,500 to the highest-placing eligible entrant; $1,000 to the 2nd-highest-placing eligible entrant.
> Women's Bassmaster Tour Championship (one event) $1,500 to the highest-placing eligible entrant; $1,000 to the 2nd-highest-placing eligible entrant.
> Women's Bassmaster Tour (four events) $1,000 to the highest-placing eligible entrant; $500 to the 2nd-highest-placing eligible entrant.
> Bassmaster Weekend Series Championship (one event) $1,500 to the highest-placing eligible entrant.
> Bassmaster Weekend Series Divisional (32 events) $500 to the highest-placing eligible entrant.
> Bassmaster Weekend Series regular season (92 events) $250 to the highest-placing eligible entrant.
The program also contains a BASS Federation Nation component that will pay $500 to each eligible state team member (up to 14 per state) and $1,000 to each eligible National Championship qualifier (one per state). At the National Championship, the two highest-placing eligible entrants will receive $5,000 and $2,500, respectively. The six Federation Nation qualifiers for the Bassmaster Classic are also eligible for the Classic contingency payments.
Matching funds for Federation Nation state programs will also be available. Those range from $250 for each eligible state team member, up to $3,750 if a state's eligible entrant is the highest-placing finisher among all anglers at the Classic.

E-Tec incentives 12/17/2007
Consumers who purchase any Evinrude E-Tec outboard engine have a chance to get a 5-year factory backed limited warranty, financing as low as 6.99% APR on boat packages or loose engines purchased for repower, and a gas card valued at up to $500. The promotion begins Jan. 1 at authorized dealerships throughout the U.S.
We've made it even easier for consumers to own the new Evinrude E-Tec outboard they've been contemplating buying with three incredible incentives, said VP of North American sales Mike Kennedy. "Our low finance rate offered by GE Money Bank is highly competitive, aimed at helping consumers get out on the water and experience the difference E-Tec technology brings to boating."
The promotion is offered in the U.S. on consumer retail purchases between Jan. 1, 2008 and March 31, 2008 on new, unused model year 2004 through 2008 engines that are 40 horsepower and above.
To participate in the offer, consumers must visit an Evinrude dealer. To find a list of participating dealers, click here to visit the company's website.

FLW v. Johnston 12/17/2007
The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that FLW Outdoors (Operation Bass Inc.) is suing one of its anglers. According to the Pioneer Press, the defendant is Kingfish Tour and Series angler Perry Johnston, whom FLW Outdoors claims "publicly and privately impugned the integrity" of its tournaments.
The article also reports that Johnston is suing FLW Outdoors.
Kingfish Tour Rule 7 states the following as a rules violation: "Any other words, conduct or actions (including and not limited to discussion forums and internet sites) reflecting unfavorably upon efforts to promote safety, sportsmanship, fair competition and compliance with the tournament rules, or which fail to comply with these standards set forth in the first sentence of paragraph 7."
A similar rule holds for other FLW Outdoors trails, but this may be the first instance of FLW Outdoors using a court of law to confront what it likely sees as slanderous Internet writing.

Waterfront access bill 12/14/2007
A bill now in Congress, H.R. 3223, would provide federal funding to coastal and Great Lakes states to help preserve and expand water access and protect working waterfronts.
Introduced in June by Rep. Thomas Allen (D-ME) and co-sponsored by Rep. Lois Capps (D-CA) H.R. 3223, the "Keep our Waterfronts Working Act" would provide matching grants through state coastal zone management programs to support "water-dependent commercial activities."

Jones takes a look 12/14/2007
Alton Jones spent the past 2 days at South Carolina's Lake Hartwell, which will be the site of the 2008 Bassmaster Classic in February. The Texan didn't catch a single fish he didn't even try.
"I have not touched a rod since I've been here," he said Thursday afternoon. "I've just been riding and looking and trying to find stuff. I've taken video of a lot of objects on the bank in case the water comes back up by then and I've looked at places like the backs of ditches and isolated pieces of wood or rock.
"I want to get a feel for where I should spend my time during the official practice days (during the week that the Classic gets under way). I've marked 111 waypoints that I think might have some potential."
He also related a recent incident that happened to him and his son, Alton Jr., at Falcon Lake near their home.
"We were out in the middle of the lake and it was dead calm, and I saw something on the water coming toward us. It turned out it was a 6-foot rattlesnake that was as big around as both of my biceps."
He had to kill the snake to keep it from coming on board.
"There's no doubt it was coming to the boat because it was tired we were about a mile and a half from the nearest point of land. But it was coming right to the driver's seat, and I couldn't just start up the motor and drive away.
"If there was ever a good emergency use for a Kistler swimbait rod, that was it. That thing was as big around as a softball."

Wall Street on fantasy 12/12/2007
The Wall Street Journal today reported on the new FLW Outdoors fantasy fishing game. In that piece, the Journal said Wal-Mart has "committed to doing a fantasy-fishing store promotion this spring," according to FLW Outdoors chairman Irwin Jacobs.
The Journal also quoted Wal-Mart chief merchandise officer John Fleming as saying the retailer was interested in fantasy sports' growth rate, particularly in fantasy fishing: "Wal-Mart has 140 million customers, and it's hard to get growth out of such big numbers, so I am interested in seeing how this plays out."

Walker to help BoatU.S. 12/11/2007
BoatU.S. announced today that is has selected the Walker Agency to help the organization grow its inland market. The Walker Agency is led by principal Mike Walker, whom BassFans likely know as one of the more influential public-relations experts in the business. He's a former president of the Southeastern Outdoor Writer Assn. and is currently on the boards of Boating Writers International and the Outdoor Writer Association of America.
"Our primary goal in bringing the Walker Agency aboard is to assist us in communicating to a fishing audience, said BoatU.S. assistant VP of public relations Scott Croft. "Mike and his team will help us get the word out about our valuable membership benefits that improve the fishing and boating lifestyle. Their challenge will be to help us reach out to waterway enthusiasts who think of their boats as part of their fishing equipment, which is different from cruisers or other watersports enthusiasts. Each group evaluates membership in our association in a different way."
Croft will continue to be the association's primary liaison to the media.
BoatU.S. is the nation's largest and oldest association of recreational boat owners.

FLW: Fantasy info up 12/11/2007
FLW Outdoors this afternoon announced the full details of its much-awaited 2008 fantasy fishing program. The news release appears on its site, and the game will be housed at the newly created FantasyFishing.com.
To answer some of the most pressing questions from BassFans:
> The prizes and grand prizes from $100,000 to $1 million will not be paid as a lump sum, but as annuities over years. For example, a player who wins $100,000 will receive one $10,000 payment a year for 10 years. A $1 million winner will receive $50,000 over 20 years.
> Players pick a new 10-angler team prior to each FLW Tour event and the Forrest Wood Cup. The deadline for picks is 11:59 p.m. (call it midnight) of the day immediately preceding the tournament. In other words, the deadline for submitting picks is about 6 hours before the tournament begins.
> The game is free to play. However, FLW Outdoors will charge $39.95 per year for those wishing to access its Player's Advantage section, in which FLW Outdoors provides its own tools to help players pick their teams. Of course, BassFan's Scouting Report and Top 10 To Watch is another tool players may use, and those will both be published earlier next season to assist players looking for insight into the event.
FLW Outdoors chairman Irwin Jacobs said at an announcement breakfast this morning: "With the popularity and profile of professional angling on the rise and with the first-ever, recently awarded $1 million first-place payout at the 2007 Forrest Wood Cup, we knew it was time to give the public an opportunity to win as well. We're forever raising the bar in fantasy sports by offering the highest payout with over $1.7 million in cash and prizes."

Gags gets his plastic 12/11/2007
Some things in Anthony Gagliardi's life are changing big-time he's building a house, and he and his wife are expecting their first child in a few months. But when it comes to his sponsor portfolio, the former FLW Tour Angler of the Year has always been conservative. Even after his AOY win, he was careful and cautious when it came to expanding his sponsor base, because he wanted to have sponsors that he could keep for the long term, and because he wanted to be sponsored by companies that made products he used and believed in.
It was with that philosophy that he recently added a soft-plastics sponsor to round out his suite. "I've added Lake Fork Tackle," he told BassFan. "They've really come out with a lot of good stuff, especially recently."
The seeds of the deal were planted earlier this year, when Gags teamed with Lake Fork Tackle owner Mark Pack at the PAA-sanctioned Toyota Texas Bass Classic. Pack then approached Gags after the Forrest Wood Cup and the deal followed.
"I was excited," Gags said. "I'd been looking for a soft-plastic sponsor, but I hadn't pushed anything hard. So the timing was perfect. And the best thing you can ask for in this business is to get sponsors where you actually use their product. I've used their baits for years."
> Gags also said he'll still fish for the Folgers FLW Team next year.

More on FLW fantasy 12/10/2007
The expected announcement from FLW Outdoors about its new fantasy fishing program is right around the corner, and a few new tidbits have emerged. One is fairly obvious: FLW will heavily gear up its media to support the game, with several tools for the fantasy anglers to use in picking their teams. Another interesting tidbit is that heavy bonus points will be awarded for picking winners and the exact Top 10 finishing positions of pros on your team. That should allow for some late-season comebacks in the total-points race. We'll publish more as it becomes available, but one of the biggest questions is still a giant mystery whether rosters will be chosen prior to practice, during practice, or after practice concludes.

Crews, Ish, Ike: 'We'll take the kids' 12/10/2007
It seems that BassFans aren't the only ones upset about BASS's recent decision to move the "Junior Classic" from the Bassmaster Classic to the Federation Nation Championship. At least some of the Classic pros are bummed too, and a few of them have decided to take matters into their own hands.
John Crews contacted BassFan this morning and wanted to broadcast the message to junior qualifiers that he'll be there at the originally scheduled date, and he'll still take qualifiers fishing. He said Ish Monroe and Mike Iaconelli offered the same promise.
"We need help to let the kids know that whoever qualified for the Championship, and is still going to go to the Classic we'll take them fishing," Crews said. "Whether it's three kids or 30 or more, we'll take as many fishing as we can so they get what they signed up for."
Crews noted that the effort among the pros has just begun, and more details will be forthcoming. He's currently looking for someone to help coordinate the effort between the pros and the kids. Until that time, he said Classic pros who want to volunteer to take the junior qualifiers fishing should contact BassFan to have their names added to a list. He'll then use that list to move forward with the coordination effort.
"It's something I thought was unfortunate, after those juniors worked so hard to qualify to make it to the Junior World Championship," Crews added. "I enjoyed taking those kids out the last few years at the Classic, and I really think that's something that should continue."
> Pros who wish to take the junior qualifiers fishing during Classic week can click here to send BassFan a note and have their names added to the list.

Cox's conundrum 12/10/2007
As the plight of John Cox shows, just because you qualify for the Bassmaster Elite Series, doesn't mean you can fish it. The Florida angler authored a storybook comeback at the recent Elite Series Wildcard Qualifier when he launched up 23 spots on the final day to finish 3rd. That gave him his Elite Series berth. What it didn't give him was the financial resources to commit to a tour season.
He faces the first deposit deadline tomorrow, when $7,000 is due to BASS. All told, he'll need to cover $55,000 in entry fees next year, plus at least another $25,000 in travel expenses. So far, he's got enough to pay his initial deposit, but isn't sure about the rest. And most of that $7,000 has come through small sponsorships from friends in the area who want to see him reach his goals.
"They're trying to help me out as much as they can, but I really need that main sponsor so I can be in there," Cox noted. He added he's been on the phone since the Wildcard ended, and others have been working the phones on his behalf too. "Mike Scott at Producto (Lures) is helping me out, and (Elite pro) James Charlesworth has a lot of connections, and he's talking to a lot of people for me too. Everybody's trying to help me out. I just have to get lucky and find the right (sponsor) I guess."
The 21-year-old Debary resident is a tradesman he does paint and drywall work during the day but he admitted he hasn't done much work since the Wildcard ended. He's focused instead on financing his lifelong dream to fish at the tour level.
"It's everything," he said of that dream.

Bass skin 2 12/7/2007
One of the biggest things bass use their skin for is finding warmer water. Water almost can't be too warm for largies, but it can be too cold.
And if that's all you get out of bass skin part 2, at least that's something. But you'll probably get more if you go to the Berkley: Catch More Fish page for the full read. Tidbit: Don't count on surface water temp readings.

Big 'O' a go 12/6/2007
The air of uncertainty surrounding the Okeechobee FLW Series has lifted. In spite of the low water and dangerous navigation conditions, FLW Outdoors will still launch its season-opening Eastern FLW Series at Okeechobee. The workaround is to open several previously off-limits areas to fishing.
FLW Outdoors director of tournament operations Bill Taylor stated in a press release: "The water has been extremely low and FLW Outdoors has worked with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to come up with alternate plans for the event. As a result, anglers will be able to lock outside of Lake Okeechobee and fish up to the S-78 Franklin lock on the Caloosahatchee River, as well as the S-80 lock on the St. Lucie Canal. Anglers also may fish pools D and E and up to the S-65 C lock on the Kissimmee River."
The event runs Jan. 23-26 and will launch out of Roland & Mary Ann Martin's Marina & Resort in Clewiston.

Two BASS rumors: Skeeter, Fishburne 12/6/2007
Two rumors hit the boiling point this morning. The first is that Skeeter has agreed to become a sponsor of BASS for the 2008 season and perhaps beyond. This has been rumored for quite some time, but the increase in chatter certainly bears mention.
The second rumor is that fan favorite Fish Fishburne, who was let go by BASS in November 2004, will return as the BASS emcee.
BassFan called BASS to ask if the company could confirm or deny the rumors. About Skeeter, a BASS official said: "We are in discussion with a number of potential sponsors, but we have nothing to announce at this time."
Industry insiders expected such a move from Skeeter as soon as it became apparent that Triton would no longer be the exclusive boat sponsor of BASS.
One interesting sidebar: If the rumor is true, the sponsorship could result in Skeeter being granted several provisional spots for its pros in the Bassmaster Opens. Word is that at a least a few Skeeter pros who fish the FLW Tour would like to dabble in BASS waters next year, and any potential for provisional slots could facilitate that.
About Fishburne, BASS didn't deny the rumor. The same BASS official stated: "BASS is always looking for ways to enhance its onsite experience." Clearly, something appears to be brewing there. BassFan did place a call to Fishburne seeking comment. Thus far, that call has not been returned.

Ish couldn't fish 12/6/2007
Ish Monroe didn't get to do any fishing on his recent overseas vacation, though he badly wanted to.
The Bassmaster Elite Series angler from California just got back from Italy, where he spent 2 weeks. He was there to serve as best man in the wedding of his younger brother, Dohnnie Gage.
"It was so beautiful over there and the weather seemed perfect for fishing," Monroe said. "I really wanted to get out on the Mediterranean Sea. I love saltwater fishing."
His brother, who's in the Navy, was wed to a lifelong Naples resident. The ceremony was held in an extremely old Catholic church, and was followed by a rousing reception.
"I've been to a lot of receptions over here, but that was something else entirely. There was a karaoke guy and he had a couple of sidekicks, and everybody was drinking and dancing and having a great time. And the scenery was just so beautiful."
He said that what passes for good Italian food in the U.S. doesn't compare to the genuine article.
"Their Italian food is a lot different it's so much more flavorful. The pizza and the pasta were unbelievable.
"Blondie's in San Francisco was the best pizza I'd ever had, and this stuff blew it away."

BASS moves Jr. Classic 12/5/2007
BASS confirmed a short while ago what recent rumors had hinted that it will move its Junior Bassmaster World Championship (Junior Classic) away from its scheduled February 2008 date, which coincided with the Bassmaster Classic. Instead, the Junior Classic will now be held in November 2008 in conjunction with the Federation Nation Championship in Kansas.
A press release issued by BASS treated the move as good news. The release stated: "The BASS Federation Nation is the main conduit of support for BASS's youth initiatives, and the move will allow the grassroots organization of BASS to lend more active support to the marquee youth championship event."
However, the release doesn't address several problematic issues, one of which is the late announcement. The Junior Classic was to be held a little more than 2 months from now, and several families likely made their travel plans already, portions of which may not be refundable. Also, one of the major attractions of the Junior Classic for competitors was the opportunity to fish with and be mentored by legendary pros, since participation in the Junior Classic was a requirement for Bassmaster Classic anglers. The juniors will now fish with and be mentored by state Federation champions instead.
BassFan spoke with Federation Nation director Don Corkran about the move, and first asked if this is a cost-cutting measure. He said: "No, it's not. We're still having the event. We're just moving it from one venue to another."
He added that the prior model of having the Junior Classic in conjunction with the Bassmaster Classic "kind of divorced it from the Federation Nation," and "this is a kind of realignment to pull it back in. I believe it'll put more emphasis on our youth programs, not a reduced emphasis."
There's also the rumor that BASS will pull back on at least some of its funding to assist the juniors in traveling to the event. About whether that might be true, Corkran said: "I'm not sure. You're getting into the financial nuts and bolts that I'm not going to discuss. We've provided some financial assistance in the past, and sometimes we have not. We'll look at that and work with our state affiliates to make that final decision."
Lastly, BassFan asked Corkran about the disappointment some juniors might feel after being promised they could fish with Bassmaster Classic pros this February. He said: "We've talked about the possibility of bringing some pros in, so that's not completely out of the question. But that certainly was not my intent when I made the move. The intent was (for the juniors) to fish with the state champions that make up the field at the Federation Nation Championship. Again, I believe that's where it aligns better, although I know there could be some children who have some disappointment in not being able to fish with a Kevin VanDam or Skeet Reese."

Kennedy's Classic edge 12/5/2007
Alabama Bassmaster Elite Series pro Steve Kennedy will travel to South Carolina's Lake Hartwell this week to get a preliminary look at the venue that will host the 2008 Bassmaster Classic in February. There's one spot in particular that he wants to check out.
His brother, Travis Kennedy of Monroe, Ga., recently teamed with Dannie Reed to win the Fishers of Men Southeast Regional Championship at Hartwell. They caught 29.9 pounds over 2 days and won by about half a pound.
Travis told Steve that all of their fish came from the same small area.
"I have a general idea of where it is, but I don't know exactly," he said. "It might cost me a couple of rods or something to find out.
"Depending on conditions, they could still be there in February."

Artificial 'eyes 12/4/2007
One of the key aspects of tournament bass angling is how competition breeds lure development. Since bass competitors can't use live bait, they forever push the curve for lure creation and refinement. And tackle companies love it, because it all creates great energy and markets for its products. That's not necessarily so in the walleye world, where live bait is still allowed in tournaments. To put that in perspective, think about a Bassmaster Elite Series shiner tournament at Okeechobee.
But noteworthy is that the Professional Walleye Trail (PWT) just announced its 2008 schedule. The format for the trail was revamped significantly, and one of the events the Wabigoon PWT Super Pro will be an artificials-only contest.
A PWT press release stated: "The 2008 Super Pro event will be the first-ever 'artificials only' tournament in major professional-walleye angling history. Throughout its 18-year history, the PWT has spawned cutting-edge innovations that have changed the face of walleye fishing. Now, the PWT will leap into the next frontier of walleye fishing, pushing the best professional walleye anglers in the world to create and evaluate new tactics, discover new tackle applications, and innovate and improve traditional methods of catching walleyes with artificial lures. This will be positive news for the fishing industry."

FLW: ultimate fantasy? 12/4/2007
Back in August at the Forrest Wood Cup, FLW Outdoors chairman Irwin Jacobs teased a new fantasy fishing program for 2008. There's been relative silence on the subject since then, but news is starting to break. The formal announcement is expected to come Dec. 11 at a breakfast in New York City. And it appears the program will be as promised, with fantasy payouts that mirror the pro payouts on the FLW Tour (i.e., $100,000 per Tour event, and up to $1 million at the Forrest Wood Cup). Another Jacobs promise that players won't have to spend any money to play also appears to be true.
What isn't clear yet is how the rostering will work. In other words, will BassFans choose their fantasy team at the beginning of the year, then "start" certain pros at events like in other fantasy leagues? Or will players instead be able to choose a team prior to each event? Stay tuned for more details as they emerge.
What do BassFans think? If you were to structure the ultimate fantasy fishing league, how would it work? Click here to let us know.

Hi-Seas grabs Weekend Series 12/3/2007
Hi-Seas line today announced an expanded involvement with American Bass Anglers (ABA). The fishing-line company already title-sponsored ABA's pro-level Grand Slam Series. New is its exclusive line sponsorship of the Bassmaster Weekend Series.
Hi-Seas line brands include: Grand Slam, White Lightning, Black Widow, Red Devil, Grand Slam braid, Quattro Plus, and Hi-Seas fluorocarbon.
Hi-Seas sales manager Steve Miller said the expanded partnership is a further effort by Hi-Seas to involve itself in the freshwater market. The company, in the past, has been primarily geared toward saltwater. Miller noted: "Introducing our lines to the freshwater weekend angler is our goal and our involvement with ABA is the right path to make this happen for Hi-Seas. With the proven success of our current sponsorship with ABA, the addition of the Bassmaster Weekend Series continues to move our company in the right direction. The anglers' feedback on our products continues to tell us that we're providing the right lines to help them win tournaments."
Triton Boats is another company closely involved with the Weekend Series. Triton founder Earl Bentz noted: "Hi-Seas is another great example of companies that are quickly recognizing the Bassmaster Weekend Series and ABA represent the future of bass tournaments. The weekend angler is a large segment of our market which will continue to drive this industry."
The Hi-Seas sponsorship includes a special program for ABA members, details of which will be announced next month. Hi-Seas will also have a booth at the Bassmaster Classic Outdoor Expo.

Martens, Faircloth switch gears 12/3/2007
Two Bassmaster Elite Series pros will try their hand at some South Pacific saltwater fishing on a trip to Hawaii this week.
Aaron and Lesley Martens have long planned to spend their 10th wedding anniversary in the Islands, and they decided to invite a few fellow anglers and their wives along. Todd and Angie Faircloth took them up on it.
Brent and Bobbi Chapman were originally scheduled to go as well, but had to bow out because Bobbi is suffering from a minor foot ailment.
Martens and Faircloth will spend a day on a charter boat.
"This isn't the best time of year for fishing down there, but there's always something going on," Martens said. "We'll just fish for whatever we can catch.
"I've caught marlin before, but I'd rather go for some other stuff maybe some grouper or dorado."
