Have no fear 5/30/2008
Throwing a frog isn't for the faint of heart. For one thing, the strikes are often explosive. For another, you can't be afraid to throw it into places where you'd never try to get a crankbait or another type of topwater.

Bassmaster Elite Series pro Dean Rojas' name is synonymous with frogs. For some advice on how you can use them to add some excitement to your next outing, click here to read the newest BassFan Pro Fishing Tip.

TBF hires conservation manager 5/30/2008

The Bass Federation (TBF) this week announced the hiring of Troy Limmer to serve as National Conservation Manager and work to support TBF conservation programs on the national, regional, state and local levels.

Currently, he's Colorado TBF State Conversation Director and also fishes competitively. He's also a member of the Congressional Sportsman's Foundation.

“I have been excited ever since I heard that TBF was looking for someone to fill this position,” Limmer said in a release announcing his hiring. “I felt it could be a position that would lend itself to someone like me to serve and help grow the federation they love so much.

"Conservation is without a doubt the foundation of our future and the cornerstone for our sport. This position is not about me or any one person. It is about us. Really the TBF conservation motto says it all -- 'TBF-- saving our fisheries together.'"

A candidate list was narrowed down to a pool of finalists, each of whom made a presentation in front of all the state conservation directors last April during the National TBF Conservation meetings. The feedback from the state conservation directors was weighed by TBF leadership in making the final selection.

“The leadership of TBF conducted detailed research on what skill set was needed to fill this role and interviewed a stack of candidates,” Mike Dunkerley, TBF Senior Vice President, said in the release. “When you look at the dedicated volunteers, who are the TBF state conservation directors, they have the expertise to get the job done as they have successfully for 35 years. We are blessed to have serving among our state conservation ranks, active fisheries biologists, several professional environmental consults from the private sector, PhD’s in analytical chemistry, and others with years of experience in the legislative and conservation related fields.

"On top of that, most state conservation directors have an agency fisheries professional within their state who they can call on if needed. With that in mind, and based on feedback we gathered, we felt what was needed in this position was not someone to tell them how to do the work that they have been successfully doing, but someone to help facilitate it. What we felt was needed was a proven performer, someone with outstanding managerial, marketing, leadership and team building skills to support, focus and lead the group to new levels, we think we found that person in Troy.”

Limmer, who's the general manager and marketing specialist of a private Colorado company, will start in new his role immediately and can be reached at troy@bassfederation.com or conservation@bassfederation.com.

Juiced up fluoro 5/30/2008
It's no secret that fluorocarbon is the preferred fishing line of the pros for the vast majority of applications. It's low stretch, high abrasion resistance, low light refraction and sinking properties make it a go-to for just about everything from cranking to dragging a worm.

And now companies, like Berkley and Spiderwire, are designing fluorocarbon in different formulations so that certain properties are 'juiced up' to give the line a different feel. The latest example is Spiderwire's new Ultracast 100% fluorocarbon, which boasts a smaller diameter and even less stretch than traditional fluorocarbon lines.

McClelland's one-wrap deal 5/30/2008

Mike McClelland contacted BassFan with the news that he signed a one-event deal for the upcoming Kentucky Lake Bassmaster Elite Series. Under the deal, he'll run a Tahoe Smokeless tobacco wrap for that single event. Whether the deal will mature further isn't clear right now, he said.

The arrangement brings up interesting possibilities. McClelland currently leads the Bassmaster Angler of the Year race (AOY). So whether or not he makes the cut at Wheeler, he might still lead the AOY race at Kentucky and be in position to get some TV time based on his AOY lead. NASCAR drivers often sign one-race deals with sponsors. Could this be the start of a new era in bass fishing – particularly for pros heavy in the AOY hunt toward the end of a season?

Food for thought, at least. Watch for more on this story to be published soon.

Wheeler-only 5/30/2008

The danger zone 5/30/2008

There's a lot of fishing left for Bassmaster Elite Series pros – five events, to be exact – but the season's mature enough at this point to at least start looking at the Bassmaster Classic cutoff.

The Top 36 in the Elite Series points qualify for the Classic (give or take some double-qualifications for the defending champion and Bassmaster Open competitors). That means anywhere from about 20th to 60th is the big-time danger zone right now. Those ahead of the cutoff need to hold the line. Those behind need to get in gear.

The Elite Series visits two traditional venues for its next two events. The field fishes Wheeler next week, then Kentucky Lake the following week. Afterwards, the tour swings north for a Mississippi River stop in Iowa, then the final two stops in New York (Lake Erie, then Oneida).

For reference, here's a look at the current Elite Series points from 20th through 60th. Those anglers below 36th place (the Classic cutoff) are noted in red.

Bag of glory 5/30/2008

The BassFan staff takes a daily drive through the launch at Dunkirk, N.Y., just to see who's up fishing for smallmouths. You never know who you'll run into. Case in point: A recent meet-up with Tommy Ball, inventor of the Glory Bag.

Ball and buddies were up fishing the smallmouth spawn, and BassFan took the opportunity to say hello and chat a little about the Glory Bag. For BassFans who don't know about the Glory Bag, it's a livewell-containment bag (i.e. protection device) meant to keep fish calm and protected. It's touted as especially effective for the protection of trophy-class fish during long, banging runs.

Basically, the Glory Bag's a mesh pouch with a zipper that runs three-quarters of the way around. Unzip one end, slip your fish in nose-first, then zipper it back up and set it in the livewell. When it's time to extract the fish, unzip the other end and slip the fish out (again nose-first). It's a one-bag-per-fish deal.

According to Ball, the enclosure keeps each fish calm and protected in the livewell. Culling floats can be attached to the bag, not the fish. And once the fish is in the bag, you won't need to handle it with fingers anymore.

Interesting too is that Ball said his company has yet to turn a significant profit, which is fine, he added, because the real mission of the company is to use the Glory Bag to spread the Gospel (hence the name, "Glory" Bag).

The price for a set ($69.95) is a little steep, but anyone who's ever missed a check on a dead-fish penalty knows that money spent on fish-care is money well spent.

For more about the Glory Bag, or to order, visit GloryBag.com.

Recon: Fort Gibson 5/29/2008
The Bassmaster Weekend Series heads to Fort Gibson reservoir in Oklahoma this weekend. Oklahoma's been pounded by some rough weather throughout the month of May, and many Okie reservoirs are running way above pool - including Fort Gibson.

Today in the Bass Recon section of BassFanArmy.com, Bassmaster Elite Series pro Kenyon Hill tells you how he'd attack a higher-than-normal and off-color Gibson if he were fishing this weekend. Tidbit: Shad spawn + rising water = strong shallow bite.

Bass Recon is brought to you by the good folks at Fenwick, Abu Garcia and Berkley.

    Breakfast with Rojas 5/29/2008

BassFan sat down for breakfast this morning with Dean Rojas. The Elite Series pro and frog guru was fishing out of Dunkirk, N.Y. – pre-practicing for this summer's Erie/Niagara Bassmaster Elite Series. Since the smallmouths are spawning right now, he's having some fun catching them, but his main purpose is to map some offshore structure that he'll test during official practice (when the smallies are back out deep).

Over coffee at Tim Horton's, Rojas pulled out a clear baggie and proceeded to show off six new colors of his Spro BronzEye frog, which look pretty hot. Standouts include baby duck, killer whale, and harbor seal. Photo coming soon.

    Reese on release-fish 5/27/2008
On the surface, there appears to be a trend in pro bass fishing: Release-fish seem to be accounting for more and more tour-level wins and high finishes. Skeet Reese says it's not a trend – the practice has been prevalent for at least the past decade. And today on the Berkley Catch More Fish page, he talks about the tactic – how to get on it, when to get on it, and why you sometimes shouldn't do it. Tidbit: When you need a check bad, release-fish can be gold, but you'll probably need to downsize to capitalize.

    Miss. fishing line recycling 5/27/2008
The Mississippi Department of Marine Resources (DMR), in cooperation with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Coastal Conservation Association and the Mississippi Wildlife Federation, is launching the state’s first large-scale fishing line recycling program.

According to a DMR news release, 45 recycling tubes will be installed at piers and boat launches throughout three South Mississippi counties in the campaign to reduce dangerous fishing line debris.

“Monofilament poses an entanglement hazard for all marine life,” said Wesley Devers, a DMR marine fisheries scientist. “Plus it causes extensive damage to boat motors and water intakes on marine vessels and industrial facilities.”

Monofilament is non-biodegradable and can last about 600 years in the marine environment.

The recycling tubes, made from 6-inch PVC piping, are posted along with signs encouraging fishermen to “Help Keep Our Gulf Clean."

The used fishing line will be collected by DMR and partnering organizations and then shipped to Pure Fishing America, the parent company of Berkley fishing line. The line will be ground into tiny pieces, melted down and then remolded into various products, such as spools for fishing line, tackle boxes and freshwater fish habitats. The recycled monofilament won't be used to make new fishing line.

The Mississippi program was modeled after Florida’s Monofilament Recovery and Recycling Program, which has been highly successful and expanded to over 40 counties since it began in 1999.

    Martin-Wells wins Neely 5/27/2008

Two lures she nicknamed "Randall" and "Bobby" helped Pam Martin-Wells of Bainbridge, Ga. deliver a winning overall weight of 36-01 Saturday at the Neely Henry Women's Bassmaster Tour in Alabama.

"Randall is a friend of mine who taught me how to swim a jig, so a 'Randall' is a jig, and Bobby is my sister, and she taught me how to use a weightless Wave Worms Tiki Stik, which I used to catch all my biggest fish Thursday, so that's a 'Bobby,'" said Martin-Wells, who netted $1,000 and a $50,000 Triton/Mercury boat rig in the 3-day competition.

She won by a margin of more than 9 pounds over two pros who tied for 2nd place at 26-15 – Juanita Robinson of Highlands, Texas, and Lucy Mize of Ben Lomond, Ark. Finishing 4th with 26-10 was Kim Bain of Alabaster, Ala., the winner of the season opener last month at Texas' Lewisville Lake.

The full details of Martin-Wells' winning pattern will be published soon on BassFanArmy.com.

    In Memorial 5/25/2008
In observance of Memorial Day, the OutdoorsFan Media staff will be taking the Monday holiday off. Normal publication will resume on Tuesday.

As the war continues overseas, we're reminded of how many sacrifices have been made so that this great country can continue to lead the world in defense of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

To all those who answered the call, and never returned, we remember you always, and especially this week.

Last year, BassFan published a series of quotes from pros and industry folks about what Memorial Day means to them. A quote from Mike Walker, contained in that story, hasn't lost its resonance.

"Kipling once wrote about the British solider: 'It's Tommy this and Tommy that, and throw him out the brute, but it's hero of his country when the guns begin to shoot.'

"As Americans, we too have our heroes, and some in our society have not always been kind to our veterans. That's why Memorial Day is so important. It reminds us that liberty has a dear price tag, and that we should get down on our knees to honor and pray for those who served, those who died, and those who serve today.

"So please, this Memorial Day, visit a veterans cemetery, attend a Memorial Day parade or function, and cheer for all you're worth. Be sure to take your children and share with them why Memorial Day is so important. Doing so is a small price to honor those who've paid a much higher price." – Mike Walker, founder of the Walker Agency, CDR. USNR-Ret

Contest: Get in on the Secret 5/23/2008

A few months ago BassFan announced a new bait on the market. The folks at Secret Lures came up with a new twist on an old standby that we've all fished in the past. They developed a plastic frog with clear plastic legs. The legs are intended to ensure the fish focuses in on the body of the frog when it strikes and not the legs ensuring less short strikes and more hook-ups. Something we all want when frog fishing.

The folks at Secret Lures want some of you BassFan Army members to have a supply of their new baits. We're giving away three Secret Lures kits. One kit to each of three lucky Army members.

    Each Kit contains:

    > one package of 4/0 unweighted Meat hooks (Qty 4)

    > one package of 4/0 1/8-ouncde weighted Meat hooks (Qty 3)

    > two packages of Chubby Frogs with clear legs (Qty 5 each)

    > two packages of solid colors Chubby Frogs (Qty 5 each)

All you have to do to win one of these kits is go to the Secret Lures website at SecretLures.com and find the answers to the following questions:

    1. How many colors is the Chubby Frog offered in?

    2. What is unique about the bottom design of the Chubby Frog?

Send your answers to memberservices@bassfanarmy.com. Make sure you include your full name and mailing address. This contest will end May 30, at 5:00 p.m. central time.

    The lawnmower men 5/23/2008
Several factors have helped define this spring's tour season. One was the abnormally cold spring, which in general pushed back the spawn significantly. Two, massive rains and runoff pushed many lakes toward flood level. Often, the flood-level was accompanied by an abnormally heavy stain in the water.

In the midst of all that, a strong pattern emerged that BassFans should jot down for future reference. It involves grass, although not of the hydrilla/milfoil variety. It centers on lawn-type grass.

Two standout examples would be Brian Travis at Wylie and Matt Arey at Beaver.

In three events at the North Carolina's Lake Wylie, Travis won a Bassmaster Weekend Series, finished 2nd in a BFL, then won the TBF National Championship.

Here's a summary of his Winning Pattern, published previously on BassFanArmy.com: "The lake was down for a long time. As a matter of fact, only one boat ramp was open this past summer and most of the fall. To my knowledge, Wylie has no grass. But in a lot of pockets there was pasture grass – like the stuff you'd mow in your yard. It grew in the backs of pockets when the water was down. When it filled back up, it flooded all that grass. Every pocket I could find with grass was stacked with fish. And they were that way back at the 1st of March too."

And Matt Arey said, in today's Beaver Patterns 2–5 story, that he fished "flat, grassy points where a park had flooded. The areas had different sizes and types of bait. I think the bait was feeding off the different things on that submerged grass. The bait was there, and every place I fished, the bait was there all the time. The wind made the fish more active, but the bait being there was the key."

So there's one possibility to jot down in the if>then section of your pattern journal.

    Recon: Saginaw Bay 5/22/2008

Angers competing in the Fishers of Men tournament this weekend at Saginaw Bay on Lake Huron will have a big decision to make: The bay is renowned for its chunky smallmouths, but largemouths can be a winning option this time of year, as well.

Today in the Bass Recon section of BassFanArmy.com, Michigan FLW Tour pro Kevin Vida discusses the potential rewards and pratfalls of of pursuing each species. Tidbit: Running a successful largemouth pattern will require a considerable amount of gas.

Tim Horton has been elected president. He replaces Mark Davis, who will remain a boardmember.

Chad Morgenthaler, most recently secretary, will serve as vice president.

Horton said of his new post: "I look forward to serving our members and the fishing industry and working with the board in reaching the goals we've set forth in the PAA. We have a strong and eager group who'll be looking for guidance and input from the members we represent."

As previously announced, John Crews, Jr., Sean Hoernke and Dave Mansue were elected as new boardmembers in April. They replaced Gary Klein, Edwin Evers and Jay Yelas. Other current boardmembers include Kevin VanDam, Stacey King and Kelly Jordon.

Tommy Martin resigned as boardmember due to personal obligations, and was replaced by Kurt Dove.

Additionally, Crews and Mansue have been elected secretary and treasurer, respectively.

    Two onerous developments (updated) 5/21/2008
(Noted writer Alan Clemons today addressed this issue in his Huntsville Times column. To read it, click here.)

Mike Bolton of the Birmingham News recently brought an important issue to light. His column addressed a proposed Alabama regulation from the state's Conservation Advisory Board that would create idle-speed-only zones within 100 feet of any shore, dock or pier across the state. That would be disaster, he notes, for many of the state's primary reservoir creeks. One example he raises: "The Coosa River on the upper end of Neely Henry below Weiss Dam, where a ride at idle speed from the launch to the dam could take more than an hour."

Seems like it's time for Alabama anglers to speak up. To read Bolton's column, click here.

That news comes in the wake of a similar regulation in New Hampshire. The bad news for Granite State anglers is it looks like their speed restriction will actually became law (the Governor has indicated he'll sign it). That means that during 2009 and 2010, the boat speed limit on Lake Winnipesaukee will be 45 mph during the day and 25 mph at night. Yikes.

Apparently, a group of homeowners and vacationers on Winnipesaukee pushed for the limit. And Bolton noted that the proposed Alabama restriction stems from a single homeowner who didn't like waves hitting his pier. In fact, Bolton brings up the following point: "If the homeowner doesn't like waves from boats hitting his pier I look at it like this: If you don't like the sound of 18-wheelers driving by, don't build your house next to an interstate. Don't build next to an interstate and then try to get a 4 mph speed limit for trucks."

Any BassFan who's ever missed a check because of a dead-fish penalty probably still rues that day. Sure, bass will occasionally expire. Sometimes you get the tongue, or they slap at a crankbait and catch their gills. But the maddening times are when a seemingly healthy fish just up and dies.

There are things you can do to boost livewell survival. You can make quick, efficient culls, for one. Today on the Berkley Catch More Fish page, Dion Hibdon walks BassFans through his culling and care methods. Tidbit: Use the right kind of dip-net with a quality coating on it.

Abbott to fish for $1 mil 5/19/2008
Jeffrey Abbott of Winter Springs, Fla. has been selected as the winner of the Early Times Kentucky Whisky Reel in a Million contest. Abbott, 51, was randomly selected out of thousands of contestants, and he now has the chance to hook a tagged bass that could change his life forever. He'll travel to Percy Priest Lake in Tennessee on May 31 for a chance to catch a tagged bass worth $1 million.

He'll be in the boat with Elite Series pro Kevin Wirth, who's title-sponsored by Early Times.

Somewhere in Percy Priest are 25 tagged bass. Each bass would award prizes to Abbott, but only one would give him the $1 million. Other potential prizes include a Triton boat and gear from Pure Fishing. Even if Wirth catches the tagged bass, all money and prizes will go to Abbott.

"Everyone at Early Times is thrilled to have Jeffrey as our sweepstakes winner and hope there is a happy ending to his million-dollar day on the water,” said Joe Murray, brand manager for Early Times Kentucky Whisky.

"I want to thank Early Times for giving me this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to fish with a professional angler and have the chance to win $1 million," said Abbott. "I'm really looking forward to spending the day on the lake with Kevin and bringing home the million-dollar fish."

Wirth and Abbott will launch Saturday morning, May 31, at approximately 7:00 a.m. from Elm Hill Marina on Percy Priest. They'll have 8 hours total on the lake to catch a tagged bass before returning to the Marina.

    Two deaths sadden anglers 5/18/2008
BASS communications director Doug Grassian confirmed tonight that Chris Bath, a member of the organization's on-site tournament staff, died today at the Murray Bassmaster Elite Series in South Carolina after suffering an apparent heart attack.

"It's a very sad day for BASS," Grassian said. "Chris was part of the BASS family and he certainly will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."

The central Alabama fishing culture was actually dealt two blows, as Bath's associate Erskin Taylor also passed away this morning, the result of a long battle with cancer. Taylor and Bath together ran the Central Alabama Buddy Tournament Trail, where names like Russ Lane, Chris Rutland and Trip Weldon competed.

Lane, who was shocked and saddened by the same-day passing of two friends, told BassFan: "Everybody who fishes in the state of Alabama knows Erskin as well as Chris. It's definitely a big loss. Those guys were a big part of where I'm at today, and I just feel if they get a little extra mention, it's well-deserved."

Specifics of funeral/memorial services will be posted when they're announced.

    Richardson DQd (updated) 5/17/2008

(Editor's note: BassFan spoke with Richardson tonight about the DQ. For the full story, click here.)

It was learned today, after FLW Outdoors published its morning story from the Wal-Mart Open at Beaver Lake, that Top 10 cut survivor Joel Richardson from Kernersville, N.C. had been DQd. George Cochran, who was previously first out of the cut, moved up to 10th and is fishing today. Cochran was announced as a Top 10 qualifier in an official FLW Outdoors press release late last night, but the release made no mention of Richardson or the DQ.

According to the story on FLWOutdoors.com, Richardson notified officials that he'd inadvertently fished inside an off-limits area, which was obscured by high water and fog. His day-2 weight was then DQd, and he fell to finish 102nd. Before the DQ, he was shown to have made the cut in 7th. He was tied for 2nd after day 1.

FLWOutdoors.com quoted Richardson as saying: "It was a complete honest mistake. Due to the fog and high water, I totally misread where the off-limits buoys were. I stopped on a place shortly after takeoff where I thought the off-limits area ended, made a couple of casts and Cody Bird idled up to me and pointed out another buoy a couple hundred yards away that had been moved by high water. I immediately made a call to tournament director Bill Taylor and informed him of my actions."

This was the second such problem with an off-limits area in as many FLW Tour events. At Norman Lake last month, Greg Pugh was questioned about fishing an off-limits area, but was not DQd, reportedly because he did not make a cast in the off-limits area. FLW Outdoors officials spoke to the field about that decision at this week's tournament briefing.

Yelas: old vs. new school 5/16/2008
Jimmy Houston finished 42nd today at Beaver Lake, which was one of his best finishes in the past several years. That means two things: One, the water was muddy, and two, the spinnerbait bite was on. And check out how some of the other old-school mudders did – George Cochran (11th), Jay Yelas (14th), Dion Hibdon (26th), Larry Nixon (29th), Clark Wendlandt (34th).

What's so curious is that about three quarters of the field ignored the mud and packed themselves into the clear water. In his BassFan Big Stick report, Jay Yelas addresses that, and talks about the new school of bass pros that just doesn't get to see conditions like this. For his full report, click here to go On Tour With the BassFan Big Sticks.

    FLW's collegiate circuit 5/16/2008

FLW Outdoors today announced its plans to add a televised collegiate bass tournament circuit to its schedule for 2009. The circuit will feature 20 1-day qualifying events, five televised 2-day regional championships with weigh-ins held on college campuses, a televised 3-day national championship and berths into the Forrest Wood Cup.

Here are some details on the format:

    > No entry fee. The tournaments are free and open to all full-time students who belong to a fishing club recognized by a four-year university or college (club members must also be members of FLW Outdoors).

    > Two-person teams will compete in each qualifying event (FLW will provide boats for each team).

    > Participating teams will receive a "travel allowance." (What this allowance entails isn't yet known.)

    > The Top 5 teams from each qualifier will be awarded scholarships and will advance to one of five regional championship events.

    > The Top 5 finishing teams in each regional event will receive scholarship awards and a donation will be made to their respective universities in the team's name.

    > The national champions will receive an invite to the Forrest Wood Cup, and they'll be provided with a truck and boat wrapped in their school colors.

"Tournament bass fishing at the collegiate level has existed for some years now, but never on a scale comparable to what we will be offering," said Charlie Evans, FLW Outdoors president and CEO. "We view our new collegiate program as a quantum leap forward for the sport and for both male and female college students, who, for the first time, can jump into tournament fishing without worrying about boat access or entry fees. It's an unprecedented opportunity for the next generation of great anglers in this country and for the industry as a whole."

Further details and tournament dates will be released soon.

    Kyle Clement Memorial Fund 5/16/2008
The Northern California bass fishing community lost a cherished family member on Sat., May 10 when 25-year-old Kyle Clement from Anderson, Calif. was thrown from his vessel while fishing the California Delta. He was prefishing for the Delta Western Stren. He was doing what he loved.

Clement had been a fixture in western tournament trails for the majority of his life. He'd established himself as a worthy competitor in FLW competition since he began fishing that league in the year 2000. Since that time, he notched two Stren co-angler wins (2007, 2005) – both at Clear Lake.

He'd recently made his first professional entry in Stren Series competition April 16–19 at Clear Lake – a tournament in which he placed 20th in a field of 200.

Clement leaves behind his father Pat, mother Trina, a brother Cliff, sister Jamie, and longtime girlfriend Alicia, along with many friends and the respect and admiration of those who competed with and against him on the water.

A Kyle Clement Memorial Fund has been established and donations can be made in lieu of flowers to the following address:

It can happen to you 5/15/2008
Recent news of missing California Delta angler Kyle Clement was sobering for all of us. Along with the Gary Dobyns Delta accident earlier this year, it all reminds us how critical it is to wear a PFD at all times while in the boat.

Below are three tips from the BoatU.S. Foundation that everyone should consider.

  • A 2007 BoatU.S. Foundation study of California boaters showed that about three out of every five say that they'd wear a life jacket if it were more comfortable. However, while comfortable designs are here today, many boaters may not know what's available. Newer vest-style lifejackets allow complete freedom of movement with broad arm cutouts and buoyancy pockets placed low on the body, allowing for unimpeded movement. Many of the newest inflatable lifejackets are no larger than a fanny belt-pack, and fit comfortably around the waist. Neither of these modern styles get in the way of driving a boat, casting a lure, or paddling.

  • The same California study showed that boaters understand the need to put a lifejacket on when the weather goes bad. But that's not when most boaters or anglers get into trouble. U.S. Coast Guard statistics show that most boating accidents occurred when conditions were calm (waves less than 6 inches), winds light (less than 6 mph) and visibility was good.

  • Remember the days when few motorists chose to wear a seatbelt? In just a short time, most American motorists have adjusted to using them – largely without complaint – and highway deaths have decreased dramatically. Boaters need to consider the fact that by making lifejacket use routine, waterway drownings would follow a similar trend.

Ranger launches jersey design site 5/15/2008
Ranger Boats recently launched a new website that will serve as an interactive shirt design center for anglers who wish to custom create a fishing jersey that matches the color, model and engine configuration of their Ranger boat.

The jerseys, made by Gemini Sport Marketing, offer UV protection, moisture-wicking properties and are anti-microbial and breathable. The jerseys, available in both and long and short sleeve, can be customized to match the exact color combinations of current Ranger models.

All jerseys are compliant with the Ranger Cup tournament contingency program, and include a Ranger Cup logo on the right shoulder as well as a Ranger Boats logo on the shirt back and left chest areas. Anglers can further customize their jersey to include such options as their boat model logo and engine manufacturer logo.

"Anglers are individuals and they want to look sharp and stand out just like their distinctive Ranger boats do," said Bart Schad, Ranger Boats Vice President of Marketing. "When it comes to Ranger owners, they really want a way to be even more connected to the Ranger Family and our new shirt design center makes that personal connection even easier to achieve."

The jerseys are $120 each plus shipping and handling and are available in sizes from 3XS-5XL. To identify the best size for each person, a sizing chart is included on the site for easy reference. Because of the customized nature of the garment, expect delivery time to be about 3 to 4 weeks.

The average monthly page views for the portfolio, at 2 million, are up 87% versus the period of January to April 2007, and average monthly unique visitors are up 8% to almost 100,000.

    Major highlights include:

    > 2.1 million page views in April, an all-time record for BassFan.com, up 135% versus 2007

    > A 37% increase in median time spent per visit (over 4 minutes) on BassFanArmy.com; average monthly page views up 304% versus 2007

“Our sites aren’t necessarily popular with the casual outdoorsman, but they’re deemed nearly essential by hardcore enthusiasts who demand comprehensive and objective coverage of every aspect of their favorite fishing and shooting activities," said OFM general manager Jim Manry. "Our team’s commitment to that simple editorial objective has been the key to our success to date.”

Said InterMedia Outdoors VP Steve Hoffman: “We’re particularly excited about the opportunity our sites provide to leading advertisers. OFM not only delivers the market’s most actively engaged consumers, we also provide audited numbers that quantify the delivery of our sponsors’ marketing message.”

Consistent with its strategy of identifying core niches of passionate enthusiasts and providing them with unparalleled news and information, OFM launched WalleyeFan.com in February to tap into the unbridled enthusiasm of walleye anglers across the country. The site has quickly built a loyal audience, with a 22% increase in unique visitors in April.

To augment its position in the shooting space, the company is preparing to launch a new website at the end of this month, which will complement its existing hunting-shooting site, ShotgunFan.com.

“Our business model has already proven successful in every competitive fishing arena,” said Hoffman. "We’re confident that the combination of timely, compelling content and accountable advertising programs will also be immensely popular with gun enthusiasts and the entire shooting industry.”

    Brunswick shutters Bluewater 5/14/2008
Brunswick Corporation, the Illinois-based parent company of Mercury, Triton and MotorGuide, announced yesterday that it will cease production of its Bluewater Marine brands including Sea Pro, Sea Boss, Palmetto and Laguna.

The shutdown will coincide with the beginning of the 2009 model year, which begins July 1. As a result of this action, Brunswick will also close its production facility in Newberry, S.C., by the end of June. Approximately 175 positions will be affected by this decision.

“The U.S. marine industry has been in a prolonged slowdown since late 2005, driven by an uncertain economy, high fuel prices, the housing slump and other economic factors that have affected consumers’ confidence and eroded their discretionary spending,” said Dustan E. McCoy, Brunswick chairman and chief executive officer.

“As a result, we are assessing the recovery potential for all marine segments in which we participate, their fragmented nature, the costs of our continued presence in certain of them, and the position of our brands," he added. "Our work is ongoing and is focused on developing profitable brand positioning in all segments. With this action, we believe we will solidify our presence in the highly fragmented saltwater segment by concentrating our efforts and leveraging our resources on such brands as Boston Whaler, Triton, Trophy, and our sportfishing offerings from Hatteras, Cabo and Albemarle, while sharpening our market focus and providing necessary cost reductions.”

    Beaver power? 5/14/2008
Here's a change: Power-fishing's the predominant attack at Beaver Lake right now. That's because the lake is at flood pool, and most of the water's mud. There's some clarity down by the dam, where several competitors practiced with the small stick. But overall, tomorrow's FLW Tour Wal-Mart Open could be a jig and spinnerbait tournament.

BassFan will publish a full Scouting Report later today, along with recommendations on who to watch at the event. For now, click here to get the inside scoop from Jay Yelas, who filed his BassFan Big Sticks practice report this morning.

    Delta incident: Clement missing 5/14/2008

FLW Outdoors announced sobering news last night: Delta Western Stren competitor Kyle Clement, 25, of Anderson, Calif., is missing after a boating incident Saturday on the San Joaquin River. A longtime Stren co-angler, Clement fished his first FLW event from the front of the boat last month at the Clear Lake Western Stren. Clement had previously won at Clear Lake twice as a co-angler (2007, 2005).

The U.S. Coast Guard issued a report that said Clement's father alerted the Coast Guard at about 7 p.m. Saturday night. According to the report, Clement fell overboard and did not resurface. He was not wearing a lifejacket. The search was suspended at 9 a.m. Sunday morning.

The full FLW Outdoors statement appears below.

    FLW Outdoors Announcement

Delta Western Stren competitor Kyle Clement, 25, of Anderson, Calif., is missing after a boating incident Saturday on the San Joaquin River. Clement's father, Patrick, was with him in the boat at the time of the incident. Both Kyle and Patrick were registered for the Stren Series Western Division tournament starting Wednesday on the California Delta.

According to a Coast Guard report, Kyle entered the water near the Stockton deep-water shipping channel. The Coast Guard was notified of the incident just before 7 p.m. and launched a search by air and water that continued until 9 a.m. Sunday, at which time the search was suspended.

"Patrick and Kyle have been a part of the FLW Outdoors fishing family for several years," said FLW Outdoors president and CEO Charlie Evans. "The thoughts and prayers of everyone at our organization are with the Clement family."

    F250 gets Command Link 5/13/2008

Yamaha announced today the arrival of a new 250-horsepower, four-stroke outboard, internally called the F250B, which offers digital electronic control and other upgrades designed to further enhance efficiency, functionality and value.

“The changes we’ve made in the F250 will increase the already broad appeal of the outboard,” said Phil Dyskow, Yamaha Marine Group president. “At the same time, we have strengthened those characteristics that contribute to Yamaha’s legendary reliability.

“When we introduced Command Link digital electronic control on the F350 last year, the response was so positive that we had to bring the technology to the F250. Command Link alone will increase ease of operation and provide new features for boaters and anglers.”

The F250 will use the same Command Link control system introduced for the F350 and F300 last year. The system has a number of exclusive features not found on mechanical controls.

In place of the mechanical cable is an electrical wire attached to connectors, which allow simple plug-and-play operation with the outboard(s) and peripheral devices. Major benefits of the system include precise trolling control in 50-rpm increments, automatic engine synchronization and easy dual-station fitment. The control unit itself comes in a variety of binnacle configurations for single- or multiple-engine applications.

    In other Yamaha news:

    > The company announced that it's added three new propeller lines, adding a variety of pitches, diameters and designs to meet the needs of the ever-growing application potential for its outboards.

“The capacity of boat builders to bring new models to market, along with the shift from two-stoke to four-stroke technology, has exceeded Yamaha’s ability to provide the right propeller for every application,” Dyskow said. “We have taken a number of steps to address the issue, including introducing three new propeller lines.”

The three new propeller lines (XL4, designed for the F350 and F300; HS4, for V6 four-stroke and 200- to 300-hp two-stroke applications; and the Pontoon Performance Series, for pontoon boats) employ both three- and four-blade designs. All are constructed of stainless steel and will be available to boat builders and dealers later this year.

    > A new 40-horsepower four-stroke midrange outboard, the F40A, has been introduced. It's designed to run more efficiently and reliably thanks to the addition of electronic multi-point fuel injection and other improvements from Yamaha’s engineers.

“These outboards are used for every kind of duty imaginable,” said Dyskow. “Whether used on a skiff, a jon boat, an inflatable or a small pontoon, the new F40 will provide value, economy and performance.”

Featuring a new low-profile design, the F40 builds upon Yamaha’s three-cylinder, overhead-camshaft four-stroke powerhead. It has an electronic multi-point fuel injection system that works in conjunction with an electronically-controlled single throttle valve, long intake track manifold and 32-bit electronic control module. Together these components optimize efficiency while providing easy starts, quiet performance and smooth, precise throttle control.

    VanDam: about the weather 5/12/2008

It's sure been a kooky spring, in terms of the weather. Several tour events have seen colossal cold fronts blow through, and there's been significant tornado and high-wind activity. Several fisheries seemed to be at least a month behind in terms of the spawn, too.

BassFan asked Kevin VanDam, who won at Toho earlier this year, if weather has been more a factor this year than in years past.

"It's played a big part in the year, but it always does," he said. "The thing you have to do is, you have to fish toward the future at an event – you have to look forward. When we were at Clarks Hill, I knew that when we had a couple of windy days with a front passing through, the fishing was pretty good. But then I saw what the conditions were going to turn into. If you see a big front coming through, you have to plan accordingly. You saw this at the Harris Chain and Toho. Those cold fronts were a big factor – not just the temperature, but also the wind muddying the water changed things.

"In some tournaments, that helps with the bite, and in some tournaments it hurts it – there are so many variables," he added. "You've seen some of that going on, with Brian (Snowden) leading going into the final day (at the Harris Chain). He didn't do anything wrong – I would have stayed right there like he did. The bite just changed and went away from him. And the same thing just happened to Edwin (Evers). I thought he was going to walk away with it. Your timing can be off just a little bit at a place like Clarks and you can hardly get a bite."

So how do you combat a squirrelly weather pattern?

"You look at it and if everything works out your way, you're a hero," VanDam said. "But if you're leading on the third day, or you run out of fish, or there's too many people around, or the front changes (the fish), you don't look like such a rocket scientist. That's the reality of it. It's tough out there."

    Loomis announces retirement 5/12/2008
Gary Loomis, founder of G.Loomis Inc., has officially called it a career. Loomis sold his company to Shimano American Corporation in 1997 and since that time he's been active with the company in a promotional capacity, and he's also lent his expertise where needed in the development of new rod designs.

Loomis isn't bowing out of the fishing arena altogether, though. He's stepping down at Loomis to concentrate on other fishing-related interests, including several conservation projects in which he's involved. He founded Fish First, a group dedicated to restoring salmon runs in his home state of Washington in 1995, and was the driving force in bringing the first chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association to the West Coast.

"I have nothing but many great memories and a lot of pride in our achievements here at G.Loomis," said an emotional Loomis, as he addressed all of his employees at a recent company-wide meeting in the Woodland, Washington facility to announce his retirement. "I probably should have left a long time ago, but I really love the company and the people here, so it seemed like the best thing for me to do. Other interests along with Fish First and the CCA have all been competing for my time. I spent the past eleven years helping promote G.Loomis. It carries my name and means a lot to me. I'll always be a part of the team. G.Loomis is in good hands and headed in the right direction. As hard as this decision was, I know it's time for me to move on to the next chapter in my life. With all of these other projects on my plate, I feel it's in my best interest as well as G.Loomis' to leave at this time."

About Loomis' retirement, Bruce Holt, Executive Director at G.Loomis, said: "Gary is a dynamic individual that has a huge interest in saving our salmon, but more importantly he's a friend. I know he's retiring from here with mixed emotions, but knowing Gary, it's the best thing for him to do. Having worked, hunted and fished with him over the years, it will seem strange that he's not in his office across the room, but I know where his heart will always be. He now has the time to focus his attention into his most recent challenge and that's saving the salmon."

    Winning the dream 5/9/2008

Brian Travis, a freight supervisor from Conover, N.C, will launch a pro career starting next year. That's been his goal for a long time, but he finally has somebody to foot the bill. He gets to live his dream thanks to The Bass Federation (TBF). As the winner of the TBF National Championship, he received the $100,000 Living the Dream package, and will use it to fish the FLW Tour next year.

"It's unbelievable – this is definitely a dream come true," he said. "And I've already made up my mind. I'm going to fish the Tour next year. And my goal is to find a sponsorship that'll allow me to fish the (FLW) Series as well. I'm trying to work on that right now."

He'll have to give up his day job, which is a substantial risk, because the Living the Dream package lasts for only 1 year. "I'm more than likely going to have to walk away from a great-paying job, but there's not too many people who can say they've got the opportunity to follow their dream. I just turned 30 back in March. I'm single, I have no kids, and if there was ever a time, this is the time to do it."

    Pure lunacy 5/8/2008
The Swiss may know banking, and they do make a fine chocolate, but boy are they lost when it comes to fishing. According to a report from the European Fishing Tackle Trade Association (EFTAA), recent animal-protection legislation in the country outlaws catch-and-release angling, and in order to get a fishing license, anglers will have to take a course to learn about humane ways to kill fish.

Yes, the date today is May 8, not April 1.

The full story is reprinted below:

Catch and Release fishing will be banned in Switzerland from next year, it was revealed this week.

And anglers in the country will have to demonstrate their expertise by taking a course on humane methods of catching fish, under new legislation outlined by the Bundesrat - the Swiss Federal Parliament.

The new legislation states that fish caught should be killed immediately following their capture, with a sharp blow to the head from a blunt instrument. Under the new regulations, the use of livebait and barbed hooks is also prohibited except in certain situations.

The laws come into effect in 2009, but while the Swiss government does not mention catch and release specifically, it does say that "it is not permitted to go fishing with the 'intention' to release the fish."

EFTTA lobbyist Jan Kappel has been in contact with Martin Peter, Vice President of the Swiss Angling Federation, to see whether a joint approach to the Swiss government could persuade them to amend the legislation - which forms part of a much wider animal welfare program.

The law on the protection of animals was passed by the Swiss parliament in 2005 and officials have spent three years refining the details, taking into account the comments of interested parties.

Said Jan: "Catch and release is one of the most difficult issues we have to deal with, and one of the most important in my opinion. The new Swiss law doesn't make use of the term 'catch and release,' which is the same as in Germany, but I don't see how governments can enforce legislation which makes 'intent' illegal. And demanding that people kill the fish they catch gives no thought to the conservation benefits from releasing them.

"Angling codes of conduct with regards to proper handling and releases can be found for practically any fish species caught by anglers in Switzerland and the rest of the world. The new Swiss law makes it obligatory for anglers to take lessons before being granted a fishing license. So there is absolutely no need for an outright ban on the release of fish in Switzerland."

It's believed that the legislation could affect as many as 275,000 anglers in Switzerland, who generate around 30 million Euros in annual tackle sales.

EFTTA acting president, Pierangelo Zanetta, said: "EFTTA does not believe that forcing anglers to kill their catches is either good for nature or for recreational sportfishing - which makes a significant financial contribution to the EU economy. Making the killing of fish obligatory will simply reduce fish population and, at the same time, run the risk of having a negative impact on sport fishing.

"Anglers and the sport of angling invest time and money to improve water quality and create larger and healthier fish populations. We believe is it far better for the fish if the fisherman decides, according to the situation, whether to keep and eat the fish or to release it."

    Stearns to 'integrate' 5/6/2008
It looks like Stearns, the famed maker of lifevests and PFDs, will largely disappear as a company, although its brand name will continue.

Stearns is a subsidiary of K2, alongside sister companies Shakespeare, Pflueger, All Star, X-Tools and others. K2 was purchased last year by Jarden Corp., a few weeks after Jarden also purchased Pure Fishing.

Shakespeare experienced a deep round of consolidation layoffs in January, and the St. Cloud (Minn.) Times recently reported that 166 Stearns employees will lose their jobs as Stearns integrates into the Coleman Company (also owned by Jarden). One plant will be shuttered, and another will continue with about two-thirds of its current workforce.

    Faircloth: 10 straight 5/5/2008

Todd Faircloth's 7th-place finish at Clarks Hill yesterday moved him into the lead in the Bassmaster Elite Series Angler of the Year (AOY) race. It also marked his 10th consecutive finish of 50th or better in an Elite event.

The Texan has cashed a check in every tournament since Smith Mountain (Va.) last June. Seven of those placements were Top 20s, and he has three Top 10s (including a win at Amistad) in five outings this year.

"We're not even halfway through the season, so it's still too early to start thinking (about winning the AOY)," he said. "But I'm real pleased with how I'm fishing and the way things are going, and I'm tickled to be where I'm at right now.

"I never like to look too far down the road, so I'll just keep taking each tournament one at a time. We have some lakes left that I think kind of fit my style and some that I'm not as familiar with, but I look forward to fishing all of them."

He's a firm believer in the positive effects of momentum.

"Once you get your confidence up, you just make a lot more good decisions. And then you just try to carry that over into the next tournament."

    Nature Vision buys MarCum 5/5/2008
In a move that fortifies its position as an industry leader in underwater technology, Nature Vision, Inc. finalized the purchase of Anoka, Minn.-based MarCum Technologies last week.

Nature Vision's ability to combine its Aqua-Vu property with the unique offerings from MarCum Technologies, which holds several patents, gives it a strong presence in the sonar design and underwater viewing systems fields.

"MarCum has always had a good name," said Nature Vision president and CEO Jeff Zernov. "They were our only key competitor in the underwater camera category. The addition of MarCum and some of their underwater camera technologies should make us the dominant player there."

This latest acquistion follows Nature Vision's purchase of Castaic Softbaits in January, which also gives the Brainerd, Minn. company a proven position in the swimbait tackle category.

"What we're building here at Nature Vision is a branded-products company," Zernov added. "We continue to acquire companies that we believe are leaders in their technology. As an inventor, I like inventive people and I like to acquire intellectual property that we can establish as a platform and build upon. MarCum certainly gives us that."

    Pro-owned tour? 5/2/2008
Here's an interesting note from the walleye side of things...

According to a press release, pro walleye anglers have formed a company titled Anglers Insight Marketing (AIM) with the "vision" to become "the industry leader in competitive angling through the insight and knowledge of its owners who are predominantly participants in the sport."

In other words, the company, which is made up of pros, seeks to form a walleye tour run by the pros themselves.

According to the release, which names Pay Neu as AIM's interim board manager, the seeds for the company were planted in early January of this year, when anglers met to discuss "the future of professional walleye tournaments," the release said. "During those discussions several items were addressed, including the current status of the tournament world, the fishing industry, and the changing business environment in which walleye tournaments exist today."

The release also noted: "At the conclusion of that meeting, those in attendance agreed to appoint an exploratory committee to investigate the feasibility of establishing a company with the mission of creating a business owned by investor anglers. This business' initial focus would be to operate walleye tournaments with the goal of improving and growing the sport of walleye tournament fishing. With the formation of Anglers Insight Marketing, this concept has become a reality."

According to the company, AIM "represents a true change in the tournament-fishing world" with such goals as:

    > "AIM will create a platform for those top competitors to fish head to head in a tournament format that will test their skills at the highest level."

    > "This tournament platform, owned primarily by these same professionals, will ultimately be structured to bring new opportunities to the sport of competitive walleye fishing at all levels, from small tours to the big dance."

    > "AIM will work hand in hand with (its) sponsors to grow interest in the sport of walleye fishing with the use of an exciting new format designed to bring a new level of interest and participation to the sport of walleye fishing."

    > "Most tournament organizations have had, at their core, reasons for existence that do not directly match up with the goals and aspirations of tournament participants. AIM was founded on the belief that the time has come for the creation of a tournament-focused business that works for all parties involved in our sport."

But as far as we know, no bait "moves water" exactly like the Action Minnow from Action Lures. The bait's body actually includes a water tunnel, with an internal fan. During the retrieve, water courses through the tunnel, over the fan, and out through the rear. The company refers to it as a "buzzbait in a crankbait."

When the BassFan staff threw it, we found that it ran much like Wiggle Wart, with a tight wobble and occasional kick-out. It makes a rattling noise, but doesn't sound like typical rattling – more like what a rattling buzzbait would sound like if one existed. It catches the heck out of bass, too.

The baits are affordable – just $4.99 each. For more about Action Lures, or to order the Action Minnow, visit ActionLuresCompany.com.

    Desperately seeking Kicky 5/1/2008
Ever heard of an old lure called Kicky The Swimming Frog? It was invented by Ray Scott's grandfather-in-law prior to World War II, but the BASS founder doesn't have one. He'd like to get one, though, and is offering a special treat to any BassFan who can provide it. For more, click here to read the latest Scott On-Line column.
