Alabama River Elite Series

Aaron Martens – Tournament recap
Tuesday, May 14, 2013

> Day 1: 5, 15-15
> Day 2: 5, 12-05
> Day 3: 5, 18-12
> Day 4: 5, 13-12
> Total = 20, 60-12 (8th place)

The only thing I regret is not going to the headwaters. Of all the kinds of fishing there are, dams and headwaters are probably my favorite. When I go to Lay, Logan Martin, Jordan or Mitchell, I always fish the headwaters and catch the heck out of them.

On the first and second day of practice I caught huge bags down on the lower part of the river. When the water fell down there, it made it a little bit tougher. Those fish are kind of like deer – they know something's going on and they get harder to catch.

I had three different methods going – a big spinnerbait, a (Davis Baits) Shakey Fish and a shaky-head. I was fishing within sight of Jones Bluff Dam at times. I was getting 10 to 15 good bites a day and I caught two over 5 pounds in practice. The fish were in 6 to 18 feet.

I'd say my practice was fair, but it's hard to tell. Hopefully I found something (Wednesday) that I can build upon. I wasn't too excited about what I did the first 2 days in terms of quality. It's going to take some weight to do well here, I assume, and I just wasn't seeing it.

We'll probably see some 20-pound bags, even with spots. To be fishing Sunday, you're going to need 15 or 16 pounds a day, at least.

The fishing's definitely a lot better than it was at West Point. I'm glad we're not still there, for sure.

We're hitting it as good as we can hit it. If we were in a drought and it was way low, it'd be brutal. With all this water, it'll be good.

The river's really flowing – about 80,000 or 90,000 cubic feet per second - and it's a little bit dirty. They could drop it and it could get 4 feet low real fast, but it sounds like everything's still flooded up north.

I'll probably fish for both (largemouths and spots) and mix it up. It should take between 12 and 13 pounds for a check if the current keeps going and maybe 15 to make the Top 12. I wouldn't be surprised if it took even a little bit more.
