Potomac River FLW Tour

Jay Yelas – Competition

I'm just relieved to know that I can weigh a fish on something other than a swimbait. In 5 days of practice and 2 days of the tournament, I didn't get a single bite on it. I don't understand it, and I still have a lot to learn about them.

I caught my fish on a Berkley Classic Power Jig, mainly swimming it around grass and laydowns, and a few off the bottom. I fished it with a Gulp! Wicked Wing trailer on 20-pound Trilene XT, and I also used some FireLine for fishing in the grass.

It was a good, solid tournament – there's nothing wrong with finishing 19th out of 200. It'll be nice to have a little bit of a cushion in the Angler of the Year race. If I have a Top-20 finish, no one can catch me.

I haven't been here in probably 7 years, and this place has a lot more grass than it used to. The fishery is good and healthy and there's a lot of fish, and they can be caught a lot of different ways. It'll probably take 30 or so pounds to make the Top 10, like it usually does.

I've had a pretty good practice doing a few different things. For some reason, this doesn't fish anything like the (California) Delta, which is also a tidal fishery. The way I'm catching them here, you could fish for a month at the Delta and not catch anything. I don't know why that is.

I've got some fish in the grass and I've got some other fish on the wood, so I've got a couple of different things going that I'll work according to the tide. I'll probably fish the grass in the morning and the wood in the afternoon.
