John Murray – Competition

> Day 1: 5, 10-06
> Day 2: 5, 11-08
> Total = 10, 21-14

I caught 75 fish a day and ended up with 20 pounds. My thumbs are completely raw, but I couldn't catch any good ones. I caught one 3-pounder up shallow today and that was it.

The biggest fish I caught all week (including practice) was 4 pounds – I was never on the right kind. Maybe the bigger ones were shallower, or even deeper, than where I was fishing.

I targeted 8- to 20-foot ledges and I'd pull up and catch 20 off one spot. You think you're going to get a big one on the next cast, but you never do and pretty soon the day's over.

I was throwing a 1-ounce Omega jig with a big Yamamoto double-tail trailer, and I also caught some on a crankbait. You could catch them any way you wanted, but it didn't matter if you weren't on the right size.

It's been a lot tougher for me numbers-wise and I've heard about guys catching big ones, but it hasn't happened for me in 3 days. But this was the way it shaped up last year and if they start running current and we get a few clouds, they'll probably bite like mad.

Every day's different around here – you might not get a bite off a place one day and then come back the next day and catch 20 pounds off it. You have to keep an open mind. You have a lot of rods on your deck and you go through your rotation of spots, and if you hit the right places at the right time you'll wear them out.

The local tournaments have all been taking a 5-pound average to win, but I haven't seen anything like that.
